When the 250s were cut loose, Yamahamounted Mike Katin motored through the first

Breathing down Katin's neck was BaJlzee/Protei/PJ I/Pirelli/O'NeaJ/Oakley-backed Neese,
who stayed there until Katin made a mistake,

slammed to the ground, breaking his handlebars in two, but he jumped up and saluted,
winning the hearts of all the spectators. With

Zoinks! It's Shaggy!

RUSH CITY, MN, JAN. 21
The Carlson Brothers Kawasaki of Chisago
City-sponsored Shaggy Young kicked off the
2001 ice·racing season on a high note by winning the Open
Novice class during
the opening round
of the DTRA-promated ice races,
held at CJ's Resort
on Rush Lake.
Some talented riders supplied the
race fans with a full
day of dramatic
racing action.
The 85cc Mini
class took to the
lake
first.
It
seemed heat winner Devin Paulson
(Shaggy's daughter) was en route
to a comfortable
victory until she
stalled her bike on
lap three, allowing
Conner Ahlers to
jet into the lead
and score the
upset, ahead of
Paulson, Kevin
Walter. and Rayni

In the Open
Novice division,
Rick
Amatoro
scored the heatrace win, ahead of
Young, but in the

Rush Lake Ice Race: Shaggy Young (66) used an outside line to pass Rick Amatoro (72)
at the DTRA ice race near Rush City, Minnesota,
of Amatoro, an elated Young held on to
score a popular win.
"That's the first ice-race win of my
career," exclaimed the longtime Martha's
Ice Racing team member.
Rounding
out
the
top five were Jacob Bostrom, Pat Steele
and Eric Berg.
Amatoro rebounded to win the Open
Amateur final, holding off the advances of
Charles Jondal.
Steele, Uoyd Turner and Doug Deering
followed.
In the Over 40 main event, Larson's
Cycle Supply's Mark Deal was out front in
and appeared to have things well in hand,
but on the last lap, Deal slid wide in turns
three and four, allowing Dan Zitur to slide
by for the win. The 250cc Novice winner,
John Monroe, finished a solid third.
The Over 30 final started out to be
another classic battle between Duluth, Minnesota's Jeff Berg and Deal. On the second
lap, however, Berg crashed his 10<500 in
front of Deal while leading the race. Deal
checked up to avoid hitting his fallen rival,
allowing Steve Johnson and Scott Williams
to move into first and second - with a huge
margin to boot. Deal recovered and gave
chase; he caught and passed Williams
three laps later and reeled in Johnson
shortly afterward but came up a bike's
length short at the line. Steve Ahlers and
Jondal rounded out the top five.
For Johnson, the win
