MX of Marton County: Tony Lorusso (78) chases down Charles Duffy en route to winning both Pro classes at the third round of the AMA Florida Winter Series In Reddick. AMA Florida Winter Series Round 3: MX of Marion County Lorusso Lassos Two BY CRAIG JOHNSON AND ANGELA HARDEN REDDICK, FL, JAN. 14 t round three of the AMA Florida Winter Series, Tony Lorusso suffered from not-50-good starts but reeled in his competition to lasso both Pro-class overalls. Some 411 riders turned out for this bright, warm, sunny race day. The Blackburns and the track officials had the track in excellent condition, with traction all day long and no dust. Tyson Hadsell led the first 250/500cc Pro moto, only to fall and drop out. Charles Duffy took over, followed by Jon Logan, Hans Neel and Barry Carsten. By the end of the first lap, Neel and Carsten had moved up to second and third. Mitchell Cooke and Lorusso were also in the top five. Lorusso wasted no time and moved up to fourth. A couple of laps later, Carsten and Lorusso passed Nee!. Lorusso passed Carsten and set off after Duffy. Lorusso caught and passed Duffy before the off-camber corner, just railing around the outside of the previous comer. Then Carsten passed Duffy, as Lorusso pulled away for the win. Duffy lost one more spot, to Cooke, as the moto came to an end. Troy Adams rounded out the top five. Duffy scored the holeshot in moto two, followed by Neel, Hadsell, Logan and Lorusso. By lap two, Duffy had pulled out a small lead. Lorusso moved to second, followed by Carsten, Cooke and Logan. Hadsell fell again and had to start from the back of the pack. Duffy pulled out to a margin of five seconds and tried to run with it. Then, at halfway, Lorusso smelled Duffy running out of steam A 40 FEBRUARY 7, 2001 • a U c I e and began to reel him in. With only a couple of laps to go, all eyes were on the leaders. Lorusso caught and passed Duffy for the win. Carsten fin· ished alone in third. Hadsell moved back to fourth, followed by Cooke. Hadsell led the first 125cc Pro moto, followed by Jarrett Tipping, Paul Perebijnos, Randy Valade and Carsten. By the end of the first lap, Carsten was into third. After a couple of laps, Lorusso moved into fifth. Carsten passed Tipping as they headed back toward the woods. Lorusso passed Perebijnos for fourth, and then he caught Tipping and passed him a few corners later. Hadsell had about a four-second lead, while Carsten had three seconds on Lorusso. By halfway, everyone's slight edge began to dwindle. The top three were soon nose to tail, until Lorusso messed up in the off-camber turn. However, Lorusso caught back up within a lap. Lorusso used the old block-pass before the second double to get Carsten. With two laps to go, Lorusso set up Hadsell in the same spot for the lead. On the last lap, Carsten took a lesson from Lorusso and also passed Hadsell in the same corner. Adams moved up to fourth, and Tipping was fifth. In moto two, Duffy, Lorusso, Hadsell, Nicholas Vaughn and Ryan Tuerck did battle. Carsten jumped to fourth by lap's end, followed by Perebijnos. Lorusso soon took the inside line through the whoops to take the lead. Duffy then lost second to Carsten a few corners later, and then lost third to Carsten before halfway. Hadsell was looking for a way around Lorusso. The ruts would get the best of Lorusso, as he could not jump a n e _ s double. Hadsell sailed over for the lead. On the last lap, Carsten was pressuring Lorusso; this was just enough for Hadsell to take the win. Duffy finished a distant fourth, and Perebijnos was fifth. Kyle Chisholm was the early leader in the first Supermini moto. Robert Kiniry soon passed him for the lead. Matthew Goerke was third, followed by Davi Millsap and Jason Rosete. Matt Boni moved to fifth, and the order stayed the same. Chisholm had yet another holeshot in the second go-around; Kiniry, Millsap, Goerke and Kyle Meeks followed. Goerke moved around Millsap for third. A lap later, Chisholm didn't jump the second double and Kiniry took the lead. Dominic Izzi moved into the fifth spot. Kiniry pulled out another moto win. The first 125cc A contest was led by Tipping, followed by Perebijnos and Michael Sigmund. As Tipping slowly pulled away, Adams soon joined the battle for second. Sigmund and Adams dropped Perebijnos to fourth, with Paul Corey riding fifth. Adams passed Sigmund, who would drop to fifth by motos' end. Perebijnos got back up to third, and Kehrli Gerard found himself in fourth. Perebijnos ended up winning the second moto, followed by Tipping, Adams, Corey, Gerard and Sigmund. Willow Springs MotDrcycle Club Round 1: Willow Springs Intemational Raceway Haskovec Gives 'em Heck BY ERIC VINCENT ROSAMOND, CA, JAN. 18-19 incent Haskovec threaded his way from the back of the pack to the front for the race victory in the Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula One Grand Prix race at the first round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club action at Willow Springs International Raceway. Defending Formula One class champion Chuck Graves was fastest off the line, emerging in the lead coming out of turn one, with Ken Chase sitting in second and Richard Alexander in third. Haskovec started near the back of the grid but maneuvered his way through the pack on his Team Hypercycle-sponsored Suzuki GSXR 11 00 and drafted and passed Alexander on the back V straight on lap four. Having moved into third, Haskovec quickly found his way around Chase to move into second. For the next six laps of the 12lap event, Haskovec shortened the gap between himself and Graves. Haskovec was all over Graves' rear tire as the racers came down the front straight to start lap 10. Haskovec's attempts to pass Graves were frustrated by lapped riders, who tied Haskovec up in his pursuit of the lead. Starting the final lap, Haskovec was once again in Graves' draft, and he made a daring pass on the inside of tllrn one to take over the lead. Despite Graves' attempts to catch Haskovec, he was left to finish second, with Chase rounding out the top three at the line.
