JIM AND VALERIE ENOS PHOTOS BV JIM ENOS MARYSVIU.E, CA, DEC. 30-31 allon Vohland, aboard a Chevy Trucks/Pro Circuit Kawasaki, celebrated victories in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes after an incredible four-moto sweep at the opening round of the 2001 GFI North Winter Series, held at the E Street Bridge sand track in Marysville. What made the sweep so incredible, aside from the fact that Vohland was simply on fll'e, was that, in the final 250cc moto, Vohland went down in the first turn and remounted dead last. With a field of 20 riders and only 10 laps, a victory looked nearly impossible, as front-runners Brian Roth and Team Green Kawasaki/Fox/Pro Circuitbacked Jeff Northrop were nearly half a lap ahead early on. However, after an amazing charge that saw Vohland using every used and unused line on the whooped-out track, he made his way by Northrop on the sixth lap for the lead and eventual victory. In disbelief at how fast Vohland made it to the front, the crowd was on its feet, but Vohland - one of the fastest riders in the Pro arena - seemed to chalk it up as just another race. "I was very close to having the holeshot in that last moto," Vohland said, "but Roth's back wheel kicked out on the little jump and took out my front wheel. It wasn't his fault - just one of those things that happens when you're that close together off the start. After I got up, I just rode hard, and with the track as rough as it was, I think my experience racing the GPs and Nationals helped me out, because that's how all those tracks are every weekend. I figured most of these guys would get tired, but I was a little worried about Northrop, because he was going fast on the 125 and he's a good rider. Luckily, though, when I caught up, I saw rum and Roth were kind of slowing each other down, and I just kept riding hard and it paid off.· While Vohland was in a league of his own, Northrop proved his sandtrack prowess with solid runner-up finishes in both classes. The Concord resident engaged in several battles throughout the day with the likes of Roth, Evan Laughridge and Nathan Woods, and he was happy with the results. "I'm pretty content with second and hey, I'm having fun,· said Northrop. "Vohland's riding great and I think this is kind of his home track, so I'll take a second.· T IAbove) ~. .kI jocker Tallon VolIIancI pulled a tour-moto _ p and ..n.ed - r from the opening round of the OFi North Winter Sert. . with the 12Scc and 250cc Pro victories. Woods, piloting a Powerhouse Yamaha, also showed good speed on the day, and in fact he might have claimed the runner-up spot in the 125cc class, as he led Vohland early on and managed to keep Northrop behind him in the second moto, but a disastrous first moto netted him a 142 score on the day. The decision by AMP Racing to go to a two-day format proved to be worthwhile, as more than 500 riders took in long motos and, thanks to a fog bank that mysteriously lifted just in time for the first moto on both days, enjoyed perfect (if chilly) conditions. In the Intermediate ranks, Michael Gorda Jr. bested Yamaha of Modesto's Chris Loredo in the 250cc class. The two split wins, and Gorda fared the best, as he kept it on two wheels in both motos. A normally front-running Loredo ran into trouble in moto one, going down on the first lap. Not one to give up, Loredo steadily clawed his way through the pack to finish a respectable third. A solid win in moto two netted him second overall on the day. Craig Smith snagged the honors in the 125cc class via a 1-3 score, wttile Matt McCrummen rebounded from a disappointing sixth in moto one with a second-place finish in moto two for the runner-up spot on the day. Second-moto winner Eric Nye posted a DNF in moto one and Loredo went down in moto two after battling for the lead, and both Smith and McCrummen definitely benefited from the mishaps. In the always-exciting 80 ranks, Charlie Morrison and Eric McCrummen put on a Mini clinic as they challenged each other in the Supermini and Expert classes. Aside from a fall by Morrison in the second Supermini moto, both riders shadowed each other 'nearly every lap. When all was said and done, the riders shared wins, with McCrummen going 2-1 for the Supermini win and Morrison claiming the overall in the Expert class. Newcomer Kale Deibler took the win in the Novice class with a solid 21 showing over Tyler Freeman. Deibler, a local Marysville resident who just recently got introduced to racing, quickly took a liking to the sport and showed good speed on the tough track. CN EStreet IrilIge Track ....,m...
