Winter Racing Series Round 1: Freestone County MX continued to swap positions until disaster struck Swanson's bike. "My chain broke on the Mammoth," Swanson said. "I did the double and when I landed, it broke." Bryant went on to take the win, with Jarad Akins the runner-up. Zach Henry finished third, followed by Tyler Dearing and Steven Arnold. STORY AND PHOTOS By KAT SPANN WORTHAM, TX, DEC. 10 H ouston's Ty Conner continued his Freestone County holeshot streak, leading each of his 125cc Intermediate and 125cc Open races at the opening round of the Winter Racing Series, presented by Honda of Houston. The track held up great throughout the day for the 438 entered riders. Conner's first event was the 125cc Intermediate contest, which was combined with the 125cc Pros. Conner sliced into the first tum at the front of the 19-rider Intermediate gate. David Tarnow got in behind Conner, followed by Robert Locke, Bradley Mikolas and Clayton Miller. Conner held his lead, with Tarnow in tow, throughout the first moto. On lap three, Miller got by both Mikolas and Locke for third. J.J. Pecsok followed Miller's lead and passed Mikolas on the next lap and then took aim at Locke on the final lap, finishing fourth. Conner snared the holeshot again in moto two. Gaddis got by him on the exit of the first tum, but Conner got him back in short order. Pecsok gated third, followed by Tarnow, Miller and Brandon Fulton, and the top five remained in that order throughout the race. The 125cc Open event had 27 riders on the gate. Conner took the first tum in front. Brian Starnes got caught up in the crowded first tum, and when Tarnow couldn't maneuver out of the way fast enough, Tarnow hit Starnes' bike and went down as welL Both riders remounted and rejoined the race, both at a blistering pace. By the end of the first lap, Tarnow found his way to 13th. However, Conner cruised in for the win, followed by Pecsok, Turner, Miller and Danny Oznick. Conner hit the jackpot in the second moto with his fourth holeshot and he set the pace. Starnes suffered another setback when he went down 26 JANUARY 31,2001 • (Above) Ty Conner (43) was best In holeshots at the opening round of the Winter Racing Series in Wortham, Texas.
