Allen and several other riders. Everyone had to burst through the ribbons, and it changed the start to a fast straightaway for the remaining 19 classes. Immediately after the first straightaway, Maschino caught the KTM rider and passed Stone on the second straightaway. "Shad caught up with me a couple of miles into the track," said Maschino. "I like to follow him because he picks good lines." Ricketts came through the score tent in first place and stopped for goggles, allowing Maschino to get by him. Chad Froman was in third place, followed by Mike Sampson and Mike Stavish. Off Road Group/TM/Bridgestone/Wind-backed Maschino led for the next three miles until Ricketts passed him for the last time. "Later that lap, I saw Shad clip a big rock," Maschino said, "and antifreeze was blowing out, so I knew he was finished." Little Egypt's Motorcycle Club promoted the race and laid out an 8mile course for 382 riders. Unexpected rain the night before made the course slimy mud run, and 88 riders were out by the end of the first lap. The track got better as the race continued, and so did John Maschino. He pulled a strong lead in spite of the conditions and won. "Everything went great for me today," said Maschino. "It was about perfect. I was third off the start, and I got shoved on out" - barely missing a pileup of AA riders. Nineteen AA riders left the start, with Team Green's Doug Stone leading them through a winding, 5-footwide trail. It was slick, and Jeff Cregg went down just before the first 90degree turn, which started a domino S Gatorback Cycle Park: Josh Liehtle won three out of four motos in the 05ee (12-13) and Supermini classes at the opening round of the Florida Winter Am Series. cue I e n e vv 50 • JANUARY 24, 2001 41
