Hidden Valley Hare Scramble.: At round five of the AMA Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles series in Columbia, Tennessee, Andy Shea was struggling with a . creek crossing when Luke McNeil ran intJ) him and the two tangled. AMA Mid-50uth Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series Round 5: Hidden Valley Hare Scrambles Ricketts Finds Hidden Valley Win Bv "My holeshot lasted about two turns," Froman said, "and then I went down." There was much confusion directly after the start. Andy Shea went down in the creek because his tire caught something and he flipped the bike sideways. He tried to get up quickly, but Yamaha rider Luke McNeil ran into his bike and they' got tangled. Both riders wobbled for a few seconds and then walked their bikes back onto the trail. "That creek was coldl" said Shea, who was completely soaked, so he changed gear and re-entered the course as a trail rider while the remaining AA riders continued the race. "It was crazy," said Bloomington Power Sports/Team Green-backed Mike McCrea. "Shane Nalley wrecked about three miles into the first lap, directly in front of me. We were both last after that." McCrea came out better. Nalley only made four laps because he went down and hit his head, giving himself one major headache for his ride home. As the race continued, there were many lead changes. Plessinger, Ricketts, Mike Sampson, Joshua McClevy and Allen swapped back and forth continually. On the first lap, Sampson came through the score tent first, while on the second lap Allen was in charge. On lap three, McClevy was a strong leader, and he claimed the fastest lap time of 19:05. For the last two laps, Suzuki jockey Ricketts was DEBBIE ALLEN COLOMBIA, TN, DEC. 3 ound five of the AMA/Pirelli Tires/Parts Unlimited/Moose/ White Brothers-sponsored Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series was promoted by Sarge's Cycles in Columbia, Tennessee. A better spot could not have been chosen for the spectators; it was a beautiful setting with a surrounding view of the seven miles of trail. Several returning Mid-South riders received warm welcomes. Former National Champion Scott Plessinger was unable to finish the race, while current Mid-South Series leader Shad Ricketts returned to win the Hidden VaJley Hare Scrambles. "I was right in front of Shad, and I made a mistake," said Scott Plessinger. "I hit a root, and it spit me onto the trail; then my knee hit right into a tree." The MSR/KTM/Plessinger Cycles/ Su nSta r /Ts u ba k i - spo nso red Plessinger rode three laps before his mishap and ensuing DNF. "It's too bad," he said, "because I was having a lot of funl" Off the start, 15 AA riders followed River City Cycles/Cycle Path's Chad Froman into the creek section. Froman proudly claimed his first AA holeshot and entered a small creek section where severa I riders went down. Froman was one of them, so P.A. Allen, Ricketts and Plessinger ljuickly passed him. R 38 JANUARY 17. 2001 • cue • e n • _ s first. Ricketts claimed he stayed in the top three all day. "Mostly, I was favoring my shoulder, and I think it paid off to ride smooth, because I didn't get tired and I didn't make as many mistakes," said the Modern Tire/Oakley/ Thumper Racing/ WER/Big Gunbacked winner, adding that it was nice to be back on his bike; he missed the first four Mid-South rounds because of a broken collarbone. Allen claimed he crashed a bunch; he would fall back to sixth place or so and then he would have to catch back up. "That is how my entire day went," said Pro Action of Kentucky /FMF / One Industries-supported Allen, who was perfectly content with second place. He said he really didn't have a battle with anyone. Everyone made a few mistakes here and there, which enabled riders to pass. "It doesn't get any better, because I had a great time trying to catch up." Silkolene/Answer / Acerbis/Race Tech-sponsored Jeff Cregg placed third, a minute and a half down from Allen. "I held fifth place until the fifth lap, and I finally started to get a groove," Cregg explained. "McCievy ran out of gas. Then I caught Mike McCrea because he stalled his bike in a creek section. I held out a third place until the end." McCrea held on to fourth place in the AA class. Dustin Gibson returned after cutting his finger off at the Crawfordsville GNCC and won the 250cc/Open A class. Robert Rogers won the Two-Stroke Beginner class. "I know this will be my last time to win for a while," Rogers said, "because I have to advance to the C class." George Poulos won the award for the longest distance traveled. He drove 998 miles to race in the FourStroke C class. I:N Hidden YaHey H...
