Steve Andrich (Hon). given a 14-second lead on the nine 250cc contenders. Taking the lead in the first-gate 125cc group was Buckelew, followed by Brock Sellards, Sean Hamblin and Langston. Chris Neitzel, Roncada and Ty Kady led the 250cc class from the second gate through the first turn. During lap one, Buckelew seized the lead, and Langston moved up into second with Sellards in third. Roncada started working through the riders from 11th place. Langston captured the lead during lap three, and Vohland charged into third behind Buckelew. Roncada completed two passes, positioning him in ninth. At the halfway point in the moto, 125cc riders Langston, Vohland and Buckelew led the race. Eight seconds and three riders separated fourthplace Roncada (on a 250) from the number-one position. Roncada passed Buckelew in the air during lap 14, closing the gap to four seconds behind Langston. On lap 16, Roncada again launched an air attack, capturing second from VohJand. After 20 laps and approximately 20 minutes of racing, Roncada was finally taking a good look at Langston's back tire. Two turns before the finish line, Roncada squeezed in front of Langston on the inside of the turn, forcing Langston to the outside. Langston made one last attempt to regain the lead in the final turn, but Roncada's momentum carried him across the finish line in the number-one position. Langston captured second, and 125cc rider Vohland claimed third. "Stephane was pushing so hard; he was catching me and as hard as I tried, he was just gaining and gaining," explained Langston. "In the second-to-Iast turn, I didn't know what to do. I knew if I took the inside, I wouldn't be able to do the double. And I knew if I went to the outside, he was going to pass me." Roncada acknowledged, "Those three guys were really tough to pass. They were all going really fast. It was getting toward the end of the race, XRIOO STK: 1. Craig Gutsiens, Jr. (Hon); 2. Stock bikes started on the first gate. modifieds on the second. A valiant effort by stock rider Craig Gutsiens, Jr. to stay in front was thwarted in both motos by Bierman Racing's Craig Candy. Candy took the overall with 1-1 finishes. Aithough South African Grant Langston is new to racing in the U.S .. he has a long list of credentials from South Africa and Europe. including the 125 World Championship. He hopes to do well in the upcoming Supercross series. but says he plans to win the Outdoor Nationals this year. A healthy. smiling .Jeff Emig was In the crowd. visiting with friends and fans. Emig said that he has been back on a bike again. In fact. his first day back on a racetrack was at Glen Helen Raceway. the site of his career-ending crash last May. "1 figured. lers just get out and go back to Glen Helen and get it out of the way. so theres not any weird feelings about the track. I don't remember the crash very well. anyway. ,. He added ..,Riding makes me feel more complete." After the race, a relaxed Roncada admitted that part of his $7500 in winnings was going to pay his vet bill for his dog Max. Stephane adopted puppy Max from the litter of Gimpy. a wellknown track dog at Glen Helen. Since then. Max has cost Roncada $2800 for hip medication and treatment of the resulting stomach ulcer. Roncada and famiiy were off to Las Vegas to celebrate the New Year. so who knows how the money was really spent. Tallon Vohland announced that he and his girlfriend are due to have a baby in the next couple weeks. He added that since he will compete in the East Coast Supercross Series. he will not be present at the first Anaheim event.
