checkered flag - a good win, but no record. Palmer's last chance came in the Unlimited GP race, where the quickest vie for a piece of the $1000 purse, but Palmer had that track record on his mind when the green flag dropped. A.J. Ammann looked like a shoo-in for the Unlimited GP championship - if he could just keep it on two wheels. "I've got the go-fast parts in my engine now and it makes 151 horsepower at the rear wheel," explained Ammann, "but I'm going to play it safe today and make sure I stay up." With Ammann playing it safe, Lenny Beckman took the holeshot and led the pack into turn one, but before the lap was over, Palmer was in the lead and looking for that fast lap. His first qUick lap was a 1:07.54. On the next go-around, he clocked a 1 :07.21. His best lap came next; he stopped the clock at a 1:07.09 - good, but not good enough to beat Ledesma's record. "I gave it my best shot," said Palmer. "It really makes me respect how fast Ledesma went." Palmer went on to win by 3.85 seconds, with Romero fighting off Stoney Landers, who, unfortunately, crashed in turn 14, handing third to Beckman. Landers was once again fast off the start, and he pulled out an early lead in Middleweight Supersport, but a miscue with three laps to go handed the win to Chad Rolland. Larry Locklear ended up second, although he placed first in Middleweight Superbike despite excessive wear problems on the front tires of both his ZX6R and his ZX9R. eN Firebinl Raceway Chandler, ArIzona Results: December 9, 2000 (Final roundl Oil S/SPT EX: 1. AMP/&FI Octoberfest Series Round 5: Oatfield Riceway Weiderhold DraV\Ts a Pair The 250cc Beginner class featured a 13-rider field, and local Turlock resident Tim Nickel came away with the overall after posting a 2-1 tally on the day. Nickel overcame a pair of midpack starts, and after first-moto winner Willie Willis stalled his bike in moto two, Nickel seized the opportunity to take the win. Willis still managed a second on the day, going 1-4 on a brand-new YZ250F. Weigand returned in the 125cc Intermediate class and put on a repeat performance as he once again dominated with a perfect score. Adam "Flea" Miller took his shot at running down Weigand, but, just like Loredo, he came up a little short and settled for a 2-2 showing for second on the day. Things were wild as usual in the 125cc Beginner class as J.R. Alvernaz came away the victory after posting a 3-2 score. While both moto winners had less-than-desirable second motos, Paul Fonte finished out the day with a runner-up score of 2-3 and, most importantly, the series championship. Cory McDaniel made a clean sweep of the 125cc Novice class as another 1-1 showing on the day made it five in a row for the series, while James Sparhawk followed in behind McDaniel with a 3-2 score. McDaniel was definitely on top of his game the entire series, as no one was able to give the Yamaha pilot a serious challenge. eN BY JIM AND VALERIE ENOS TURLOCK, CA, DEC. 10 pair of consistent runner-up finishes posted by Honda pilot Todd Weiderhold proved to be the winning combination, as he took the overall win in the 250cc Novice class at the fifth round of the Thor/ Alpinestars/Scott/Merced Powersports-sponsored 2000 AMP/GFI Octoberfest Series. Weiderhold engaged in a tight three-rider battle in moto one and returned in moto two with a clean holeshot. While Weiderhold rode two solid matos, Robert Haun and Shawn Trantham split moto wins on the day; Haun (1-3) grabbed the runner-up spot, with Trantham (5-1) rounding out the top three. Trantham, who was running second in moto one, might have had the overall on the day had it not been for a fall in the last turn before the checkers. Utilizing the picturesque Oatfield Raceway, the AMP crew welcomed more than 300 riders to the final round of the seri';s. Up for grabs were beautiful gold cups for the series champions, along with lots of goody bags filled with sponsor product for the top two or three. SoCal hotshoe Tim Weigand made the trek north and promptly posted a pair of moto wins in the 250cc Intermediate class. Yamaha of Modesto pilot Chris Loredo tried his best to close in on Weigand in both motos, but in the end he had to settle for second on the day with a well-earned 2-2 score.
