DBER LOS FRESNOS, TX, DEC, 10 After several months off to recover from a broken ankle and surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome, AMA Pro rider Todd Downs attended the final race of the year at the beautiful Los Fresnos MX facility. The Harlingen Motor Sports Suzuki/Pro Grip/Applied/IMS/Cycrabacked Downs was looking very fast on a borrowed RM250 and he quickly dialed in the new track, which was in excellent condition, and the fans were anxjous for some high-flying motocross action. Although the Open Cash class was small, two riders attempted to beat Downs. SuzukiKTM of McAllenfTucker Rocky/GTD/VP/MSRsponsored Bryan Monjaras and Cycle Sports International Honda rider Rene Gomez were up for the challenge. When the gate fell for the first moto, Downs and Monjaras rounded the first turn bar to bar. Then Downs pulled a slight lead. Monjaras kept pace with Downs for several laps, occasionally showing him some front tire, but Downs was just too fast and eventually pulled away. Monjaras was second overall. The Over 40 Vet class was a superclose race, with Bobby Dumas leading the way to the checkers in the first moto. Corpus Christi racers Jake Warren and Bob Silvernail kept Dumas honest the entire race. Warren, Silvernail, Harry Morse and Joe Smart rounded out the top five. When YZ426F racer Morse pulled off the track, his rear sprocket and hub just fell apart into several pieces. He borrowed a friend's YZ400 and finished fourth in the second moto, which belonged to Kawasaki jockey Silvernail after a great race with Dumas. Silvernail's 3-1 score gave him second for the day, and Dumas got the overall. Warren's 2-3 moto finishes gave him third for the day. One of the most exciting races of the day was the 250cc Novice contest between Brownsville Sports Center Honda rider Paul Pederson and Yamaha pilot Carlos Lugo. They went bar to bar and swapped lines in both motos. Lugo took the lead for a short time, but Pederson finally won both motos. CR500mounted Merle Bernhardt and Andy Lester also had a battle going on for third place in both motos. Lap after lap, they raced side by side. Bemhardt went on to take third in both motos, with Lester taking fourth. Local 80cc racer Ricky Garcia had a hotand-cold day, winning the first moto and fin· ishing fourth in the second. Garcia had his hands full in moto two chasing after Mexico's Hector Collins, Rodrigo Rodriguez and Bemardo Alegria. Rodriguez went on to win the moto, followed by Collins, Alegria, Garcia and Jose Rodriguez. David C. Petta looked like an early contender, bUI a first-moto crash derailed his plans, Other notable rides were turned in by KXmounted B.J. Shields and Jon Mason Russell. Joe Bob Ebers made an appearance, though without his Suzuki; Ebers injured his back and will probably not return to racing. The Rio Grande Valley MX Association wish him a speed recovery. (Yam); 4. Los Fresnos MX Part<: Todd Downs (11) won the Open Cash contest in Los Fresnos, Texas_ ners was none other than Jeff Alessi, who rode unchallenged in the 60cc (g- 11) division, taking both moto wins. The Noble brothers, Scott and Garrick, rounded out the top three. Alessi then climbed aboard his Yamaha to pull off two moto wins in the aOce (9-11) division. In the first moto, Shawn Mohr took the holeshot, followed by Chad Gores and Alessi. The three went to battle and Mohr, feeling the pressure from Gores, went down in the turn. Gores took over the lead, with Alessi close behind. Gores held tough for two laps, but a determined Alessi charged through the back section like a freight train and took advantage of the first inside tum he could get his tire into. Alessi made his pass for the lead, and Gores hung tough. Alessi took the checkered flag, Gores finished an impressive second, and Hayes rounded out the top three. Hayes took the second-moto holeshot and the early lead, followed by Alessi. Once again, Alessi was not backing down, and he was able to get by Hayes quickly and take over the lead. Hayes had a strong second, and Jonathan Arana and Gores went to battle for third. Arana was able to shut down Gores for about four laps, but when the white flag came out, Gores challenged Arana for the thirdplace position. Both riders were getting big air over Gravity Cavity, but it was Gores who landed the jump first taking the inside line and the third-place position. Alessi took the moto win, followed by Hayes, Gores and Arana. In the younger division of Mini riders, 60cc (6-8), it was "Mini Warriors 3" crash star Nick Paluzzi taking two moto wins. In the first moto, Bryce Stewart shot out of the gate like a rocket with the holeshot and early lead, followed by Paluzzi and Michael Truglia. Stewart heid tough, but Paluzzi was able to get by Stewart for the lead. Stewart then had company - Michael Truglia was knocking at his door. Truglia was able to make a pass on Stewart for second, and Stewart rode consistently in third. Paluzzi took the win, followed by Truglla, Stewart and Jake Mendenhall. In the second moto, Stewart again blasted through the pack, and alongside him was Paluzzi, fighting for the holeshot. Paluzzi was able to take the inside line in the first turn and take the lead, Stewart was able to keep second for two laps before Truglla worked his way by. The checkered flag came out and it was Paluzzi, Truglia, Stewart and Mendenhall. In bigger-bike action, Adrian Feliciano took the overall win in the 125cc Beginner class, beating out local favorite Zachary Saathoff, In the 125cc Intermediate division, Patrick Terry had a very impressive night. as he was able to take two moto wins. Ben Ramsaran finished second and Ryan McGee was third. Results SmaD Track 50 (4-6) SHAFT: 1. Bryce Ketzel (Yam); 2. fraN Hahn (Yam); 3. Storm Walker (Yam); 4. Blayze Polthe (Yam); 5.
