Starwest Cycle Park Saathoff Steals the Show Bv MIKE ANO BARBARA PALUZZI MORENO VALLEY, CA, DEC. 2 Zachary Saathoff took both moto wins in the 125cc Beginner class despite some tough competition on Saturday night at Starwest. In the first moto, Rich Wheeler nailed the holeshot, but after the first turn Justin Richards worked his way around Wheeler for the lead. However, before Richards could get comfortable in the first-place position, Saathoff quickly worked his way by Wheeler and set his sights on Richards. Saathoffs hard-driving persistence paid off; he was on the gas down the back straightaway and he made his move on Richards. Saathoff took over the lead and was able to hold on to it as the checkered flag came out. Richards settled for second and Wheeler took third. In the second moto, Wheeler had a repeat holeshot but he again found himself in trouble as Richards and Saathoff quickly worked their way by, Richards taking the lead. Richards hung tough for about three laps, but when he and Saathoff came into the whoop section side by side, Saathoff was able to make the pass. Saathoff took over the lead. Before Richards could recover, Wheeler started applying the pressure for the second-place position. Not about to back down this moto, Wheeler made his pass, and when the race ended it was Saathoff, Wheeler and Richards. Daniel Taft was in total control in the 125cc Novice division aboard his Race Signsbacked Honda. Taft took the first-moto holeshot, followed by Brandon Prahm and Patrick Anthony. Taft was able to hold off Anthony for the win. Anthony placed second and Bryan Ehrman put in a strong ride for third. Prahm finished fourth. In the second moto, Taft again absconded with the holes hot and the early lead. Taft found himself under pressure, as Prahm was knocking at his door. Taft was able to hold off Prahm for about four laps before a determined Prahm was able to sneak by Taft in the tum and take over the lead. Not giving up, Taft kept close, and when Prahm took a spill, Taft regained his first-place position. When the checkered flag came out, Taft took the win, followed by Eric Wood and Ehrman. Marcus Carrillo took both moto wins in the 65cc (9-11) division, followed by Scott Noble and R.J. Bartholomew. In the 65cc (6-8) division, Nick Paluzzi scored both moto wins, followed by David Meade and Joshua Bloodworth. In the Pee Wee division, Nick Paluzzi pulled off two moto wins in the 50cc (7-8) class. There was a major battle for second place in both motos between Bryan Briley. Jeremy McCool and Caden Probst. Briley came out ahead for second overall, and McCool held tough for third.
