The Extreme Park Ha re Scrambles turned into a
battle betwc'Cn Missouri's to!, pro MXer , Doug
Sto ne, an d Mi ssou ri' s to p off~roade r . Steve
Leivan . In the end , it was Leivan by a whee l at
the 11th rou nd of the Forward Motion Series.
O n th e s ta r t 01 t he McBra nn 's C ycle
Shc-d 100Neal USA-sponsored event, Stone powered his Kawasa ki of Missouri /Thor KX250 in to
the lead.
" 1 haven't done one of these hare scrambles
in years ," Stone said later. "Last time, it too k a
couple of kicks to get the bike to start. This time,
holy cow! - I got the ho!c'Shot:'
Riding with no ~lrk busters and a borrowed
th ree-gallon gas tank, Stone pul led ou t severa l
bike lengths on the first lap. Matt Lane and
Terry Gilliland gave chase . Leigh Letellier and
Leivan we re third and four th. Letellier qu ickly
pa ssed Lan e and Gill iland and th e n stalked
Stone for thr ee laps. Letellier mad e a pass on
Stone, wh o was in the creek, for the lead.
" I wa s cha sing Stone," Letellier said. "1
expected him to be fast at fIrst, maybe even erratic. He was riding reall y smooth and controlled .
Leh'an tried to pass me on the third lap . We went
down this big hill. I heard him yelling. The next
th ing I knew, he was rolling a round on the
gro u nd . Then, in the creek, Stone go t behind
some lappers . I took a different line and mad e the
pass. When we grit back to the motocross track
and hit the whoops, he went right back by me.
Stone pu lled aw ay from Lete llier and wa s
also a good two minutes a head of Leivan at the
hallway point. It looked like it would be an easy
victory for Stone. However. Leivan, wh o is notoriou s for la te charges, reeled in Lete llier and
moved into second when Letellier got stuck in
the creek. Leivan charged hard and ca ugh t Stone
on the final lap, and then took the lead with half
a lap to go.
" Leivan p ass ed me in the cree k ," Sto ne
reported. "I thou ght if I could hang with him , I
mi ght get him back in t he w ho ops . A lapper
held me back ju st e nough, e n te ring the MX
track, that I couldn't get him . He was no slouch
on the MX track."
The two riders came through the final check
fende r to tire. with Leivan the v.;nner.
In the Trai l Racer class, Kawa:;aki ace Scott
"Sticker Kit" Henion took the holeshot and ran
out fro nt for mos t of the even t, ahead of Chris
Bittle and John Christopher on his Letko KTM

lead for an easy win over Christopher.

Ondas takes the

By Shawn Drou in
REDMOUNTAIN, CA, SEPT 26
.
The Shamrocks Hart:~ and Hound too k place in
Red Mountain on a nice, hot summer dav. The
event started at exactly 10 a.m. The bo~b wa s
di fficu lt because of all t he bu shes; howe ver,
many riders thought the \;rgin terrain mad e for
a good race course.
Team Green/FMF/MSR /Shoei-ba cked Dave
Ondas took his KX500 to the overa ll win , ahead
of second-place finisher Abe Bau ma nn.
"I go t a medi um sta rt and was about fifth or
s ix th to th e end of the b omb," sa id Ondas.
1rVhen I came in to the pits , I was running second and right behind Baumann. Abo ut hall a
mile into the loop. I passed Baumann. My bike
ran gre at a nd ha s performed well th e whole
year. I d idn 't hav e a ny get-offs and everyt hing
wen t great. I really liked how they mark~ the
course and the variety of terrain."
Befor e passin g Baum ann, how ever , Ondas
fIrst had to pass fellow KXSOO p ilots Jeff Ca pt
a nd Da n Richardson, wh o w ere co m pe ti ng
aga inst race lead er Baumann in the O pen Vet
Expert class.
" It too k me a while to pass them beca us e
they are really good riders," said Ondas about
passing all three rid ers . "Becau se the first loop
was easier than the seco nd , I d id most of my
passtn g there. There were some pr etty tech nical,
rocky hilts on the seco nd loop. I rod e consis tent
a nd didn 't try to rid e over my head , and I jus t
had a good race."
Baumann may not have won the overall , but
he moved on e step clo~er to wrapping up the
Vet Open cha mp ions h ip . Still , Bau ma nn is in
close com pe tition with Capt fo r the title thi s
year. The title will most likely be decided at the
final round. in December.
"I got a goo d start and was the first one to
the end of the bo mb," said Ba uma nn, who is
usually the first one to the end of the bom b ru n.
"After the bo mb, the course took you th rough
some tight canyo ns an d so me sand hill s. The
canyons got rea lly du sty , so it was hard for pe0ple to ca tch up to me. The first loop , I was just
basically tryin g to stay ahead of everyon e. I really liked the first loop. The y had a lot of singletrack trails o n t he s id es o f mountains and
through the hills. (liked the fact that they d idn 't
p ut too many whoops in the course. I came into
the pits running firs t overall. My d ub ga ve me a
grea t pit. It was quick. The SL'COnd loop got kind
of rocky, bu t it wasn't too hard. I go t a little hot
and tired , and tha t' s when Dave Ondas ca ugh t
up to me. We got in to the Spa ngler Hills and
there was on e sa nd- wash canyo n tha t was a little whooped out . It wa s fifth -gear terrain, and
the ca nyo n had steep wa lls to bo th side s, a nd
rocks. Ond as pulle up next to me; I looked at
d
hi m and he at me, and we wer e both lin] fifth
gear, pinn ed wide-open, going in to the mouth of
the canyon. Then I was th ink ing, 'Should I keep
it pinned or not ?' and then I thought , 'Not,' but I
chickened out a nd let him pass. Maybe tha t's
age speaking. He's you ng and can afford to get
off, and I can 't. After that , he just took off, and I
was thinkin g, 'Why d id I let him go by? Now I
have to eat his dust"
As it turn s ou t, e ve ryone a te Ondas' du st.
Richardson beat out Cap t to finish second in the
Ve t Open Exp e rt class. The Team Green du o
mad e it four K.X 500 ~ in the top five.
