Cook concocts a championship
By Lisa Conzattl
PORTLAND, OR, OCT. 10
Am assin g t he most overall poi nt s th is yea r,
David Cook earned the number-one plate for the
2000 racin g season. At the beginn ing of the da y
at Portland International Raceway, Coo k had a
scant seven-point lead over com petito r Rob Carpenter. Coo k kn ew he need ed to stay up front in
his four classes' in ord er to maintain his overall
lead . Adm itted ly nervous, Cook said the champion ship d epe nd ed on his "being patient and
not doing an yth ing stupid."
After his win in the 600cc Superbike class,
his first class, h e felt he had locked in a good
cushion and that from then on he "just needed
to finish in the top five ." Number tw o ov erall
we n t to Ala n Sch midt, wh ile Rob Car pen ter
end ed the sea son in third.
In 600ec Superbike action, Schmidt , aboard a
Kawasak i ZX6R, jumped ou t into the lead , followed down the straight by Carpenter and Cook,
both astride Yamaha R6s. The fourth spot wa s
occupied by Team Green Kawasaki 's Mike Sullivan, wh o was followed by Mar k Lorentz on an
R6. These top five riders formed a train that broke
away early on from the rema ining 23 rider s in the
field. After several position chang es, Cook came
out on top, followed by Sclunidt and Sullivan .
Schmidt also nab bed th e hol esh ot in th e
600 cc Sup ersport class, followed d ow n t he
s traigh t by Cook and Sullivan. These t h ree
staye d glued together d uring the 10-lap event,
e xch a ng in g po si tions ni n e times . Schmid t
arrived at the finish line first, followed by Cook
and Sullivan.
Aboa rd his RI, Cook leaped ou t in fro nt in
the Open Supersportevent, followed by Sullivan , on his ZX9, and Mike Mitchell, also on an
Rl. Mitchell d rafted and passed Sulliva n down
the stra ight on the second lap but could n't make
th e pa ss stick , and Su llivan flew by o n the
brakes going into tu r n one. Th e n e xt ti m e
aro.Jlhd, Mitch ell waited u n til th e end of the
straight to attem pt the pass on Sullivan , bu t he
was again denied by the brake master. Sullivan
wen t on to pass Cook for the lead between turns
tw o a nd three. The p ositions st ay ed the sa me
until lap seven, wh en Sulliva n almost tossed it
away in turn seven, allowing bot h Cook a nd
Mitchell to fly by. Sullivan man aged to get back
aro und them bo th at the end of the straight on
lap nine, and he held on for the win .
