Locke gated at the fron t of the field in the first rnot o, ahead of Chris Honnold and Ch ris Tho m pson . Meadows held down fourt h, over Deu ce Rutl ed ge an d Danny Mohr, and he stayed there until the midway point, when he was finally able to sli p past Th ompson . Meadows overtook Honnold for second place on the foll owing circui t of th e jump-filled track, but by that tim e Locke was ou t of reach, and Meadows had to settle for the runner-up finis h. . In ro u nd two, Meadows sho t ou t to an im me diate lead on his new Honda, wi th Locke and Thompson right on his back fender. For the next six laps, Locke h ound ed Mead ow s, sea rc hi ng for a place to pass. In the end, the Color Crea tio n /EVS / Ga lpi n /N-Sty le / Sinisa lobacked Mead ows took the wi n by a bike length. Thompson stayed clo se to th e battl e up fron t, and his 4-3 topped the 34 of Honnold for third ov erall. Thompson returned to ea rn a win of his own in the 250cc Intermed iate class on h is O 'Nea l/Focus /Pir elli /Motul / NGK -spon sored RM250. Brent Gilliam M 36 went w ire to wire in mo to one, o ve r Thom pson a n d Nick Mairose. Tho m pson nailed the seco nd- moto sta rt and then proceeded to spank the field, going 2-1 for the overall . Gillia m suffer ed a case of a rm pump b ut finishe d third , behind Mair ose, but he still collected the seco ndpla ce bra s s . Chris Reed and Robbi e Dunh am ro u nded ou t the top five. KX80-mo u nted Ky le Fo ltz mad e his way to the hea d of the pack on the opening lap of the first 80cc 0 2-13) moto and never lo o ked back. Cory Red e n iu s greeted the checkers in second , fo llowed by Kenny Clark an d Sean Borkenhagen. Red eniu s a nd Foltz traded places the second time out, wit h Red en ius managing to ru n away to sew up the overall. Clark an d Bor kenhagen again ma de their way u p in to th ir d and fourth, respectively, by th e end of the race. Th ousand Oaks Kaw asaki / Maxi ma -bac ked Garrett Warren ' d omina ted the firs t Supermi ni moto, ahea d of Bor kenh agen and Clark. Clark absc onded w it h th e holesh ot in round two, but a s lig h t off-t rack excursion handed Borkenhagen the top spot. Warren got a midpack s tar t and by lap fo ur h e had mana ged to outjump Foltz, who was running in second p lace. Wa rr en hounded Borkenhagen on the last lap until Borkenhagen bobbled with two turns rem ain ing, ha nd ing th e win to Warren . Fo ltz came a cr o ss i n third for fou r th o ve ra ll , behind Clark (3-4). Aaron Bjork proved 'you d on't neces sarily have t o be the fastest rider to win, just the mos t consistent, as he en ded up the 250cc Beginne r winner on a 2-2 day. Brya n Wa r d was flawless in th e opening moto, leading every lap for the win, while Bjork kept his fellow Yama ha rider ho nes t. Jaso n Reyes held off Monty Bucka llen for third . Reyes sna tched the holeshot in moto two but oversho t the second turn and went fro m firs t to last in an instant. Robert Goe ttling inheri ted the lead , over War d and Bjork . Ward we nt down off a dou ble along the back fen ce, whi le Bjork , caug ht Goettling and dogged him all the way to the checkers for the overall wi n. At the beginn ing of the da y at Portland International Raceway, Coo k had a scant seven-point lead over com petito r Rob Carpenter. Coo k kn ew he need ed to stay up front in his four classes' in ord er to maintain his overall lead . Adm itted ly nervous, Cook said the champion ship d epe nd ed on his "being patient and not doing an yth ing stupid." After his win in the 600cc Superbike class, his first class, h e felt he had locked in a good cushion and that from then on he "just needed to finish in the top five ." Number tw o ov erall we n t to Ala n Sch midt, wh ile Rob Car pen ter end ed the sea son in third. In 600ec Superbike action, Schmidt , aboard a Kawasak i ZX6R, jumped ou t into the lead , followed down the straight by Carpenter and Cook, both astride Yamaha R6s. The fourth spot wa s occupied by Team Green Kawasaki 's Mike Sullivan, wh o was followed by Mar k Lorentz on an R6. These top five riders formed a train that broke away early on from the rema ining 23 rider s in the field. After several position chang es, Cook came out on top, followed by Sclunidt and Sullivan . Schmidt also nab bed th e hol esh ot in th e 600 cc Sup ersport class, followed d ow n t he s traigh t by Cook and Sullivan. These t h ree staye d glued together d uring the 10-lap event, e xch a ng in g po si tions ni n e times . Schmid t arrived at the finish line first, followed by Cook and Sullivan. Aboa rd his RI, Cook leaped ou t in fro nt in the Open Supersportevent, followed by Sullivan , on his ZX9, and Mike Mitchell, also on an Rl. Mitchell d rafted and passed Sulliva n down the stra ight on the second lap but could n't make th e pa ss stick , and Su llivan flew by o n the brakes going into tu r n one. Th e n e xt ti m e aro.Jlhd, Mitch ell waited u n til th e end of the straight to attem pt the pass on Sullivan , bu t he was again denied by the brake master. Sullivan wen t on to pass Cook for the lead between turns tw o a nd three. The p ositions st ay ed the sa me until lap seven, wh en Sulliva n almost tossed it away in turn seven, allowing bot h Cook a nd Mitchell to fly by. In mota one, Kawasaki jockey Bryan Haase ab sconde d w ith the holesh ot. jertngan shoved his CR12S into second , whil e Yamaha pilot Ryan Amaradio ran third . When the racers came ou t of the back section for the first time, the top five spots wer e filled out by Chris Herrin and Skip Benedict. On th e sec ond lap , Am aradio took ove r second . Herrin hit the dirt on the next lap, all ow in g Ben ed ict to move u p a nd Yam ahamoun ted Iayson Lu bben to take over fifth. Out fron t, Haa se was steady with the lead , though Amaradio was beginning to inch toward him . By halfwa y, [eringan had closed to ma ke it a thr ee-way ba ttle for the lead . For the next tw o laps, the riders rode in tight formation, less than a second apa rt. With two laps to go, Amaradio tried to slip inside of Haa se in a tight right -hand comer; the two rid er s came together and then bailed off their mac hine s. [eringan zipped by the car n age to ta ke ov er the lead . Ama rad io was first to rem ount, and ,he still held second . Haase got going just in front of Benedict to hold down third . [erin gan rod e mistake-free on the last lap to take the moto win. Amaradio settled for secon d, w hil e H aase ro lled in th ir d . Benedi c t claimed fourth, and Lubben was fifth. In moto two, Haase agai n took the holeshot. Ama rad io agai n gated well and held down secon d, and Jeringan rod e in third . Lubb en rod e in fou rth , and Herrin was fifth as the pack completed the first lap . Haase immed iately opened up a one-second lead , while Jeringan d osed on Ama radio and. hound ed him, lookin g to ma ke the pass . On the fourt h la p, Ieringa n fin all y foun d a way to make a pass on Ama radio stick, and he mo ved up to second and began ap plying pressure on Haase for the lead. Afte r a poor start , Benedic t came from wa y back an d went around He rrin for fifth. Lubben was still rid ing hard in fourth, right behind the lead pack. With two laps to go, [eringa n had closed to within two bike lengths of Haase, and when the white flag came ou t, he was looking to make the pass for the win. Haase di d wha t he could, but Jerin gan was rel en tles s, a nd he for ged p a st Haase o n th e last la p to take th e mo to w in . Lubben also made a last-lap pass, p ushing Amaradio back to fourth . Bened ict cam e in fifth . Ieringan' s 1-1 finishes ear ned him the ove rall win on the d ay. Haase finis hed up in second with his 3-2 tally, whil e Ama radio claimed third after going 2-4. Lubb en was fourth after posting 5-3 rides , and Bern.. edict's 4-5 finishes earn ed him 250 GP: 1.
