WillowCreek H S No waiting for Letellier By Brad Jones FA IRFAX, MO, OCT. 10 In the nin th rou nd of the Forward Motion Series, Mid west Race Products' Leigh Letellier w asted no time in walking away w ith his th ird o verall win of the season. On the start of the two- hour ha re scra m bles, YZ400-mo u nted jeff Schneider go t the jump on the pack of AA riders. Letellier and Jim Brawner dipped bars right off the line . 'The s tart w as dus ty," Letellier commen ted la ter . "We w ere go ing a round th e mo to cross tr ack ~fo re en tering the woods. I figuTt j when x we go t in to tho w oods, I'd be ab le to turn it u p." Ridi ng a brand-new KTM 250, Letellier di d just that, passing series points lead er Scott Harper an d then stuffing Brawner before o ne of the big up hills. In the lead wa> Letelli er's bes t riding buddy, Sch neider, who killed his moto r at the top of one of the Willo w Creek bl uffs. Letellier stopped a nd harassed Sch neid er as he tr ied to rest ar t his big four-s tro ke. Soon Brawner and H a rper app roa ched . Letellier took off and rode a t a blistering pace, lead ing by 45 seco nds at the ha lfway point. "When I saw Harper and Brawne r coming, I put th e ha m me r d o wn ," Let ellier said . "T he bike wa s working great and I rode hard for two lap s. After th at , I just m e llowed a n d rod e smooth." With Letellier long gone, Schneide r wor ked his way pas t Brawner a nd H arper for second overall. "I cras hed in pra ctice and hit m y head ," said Schneider, a chiropractor from the Kansas City area . Riding a [acks o n Performa nce-m od ified KTM 380, th e ve teran rider flew over the 230-foot hi ll in a blaz ing 4.524 secon ds to take a conv incing w in in the 400cc clas s and a lso set the ove rall fast time for the e vent. Mark Sha fer was clo ses t to him in the class, toppin g the hi ll in 4.923 seconds o n hi s ol d YZ400 for secon d pla ce , wit h Ma lt Peters ru nning third on his CR301 in 4.977 seconds. But it w a s one of th e yo un g g uns, Scott "Scoo te r" Sheet s, who - every o ne was ta lk in g a b o ut a t d a y ' s e n d . T he 15 -y e ar -old r id e r entered fou r classes and wen t to the wi ns in all four, and his 4.630-second tim e in the Pus hr od class w as the second-f astes t time of the da y. Scooter's firs t wi n came in the 200cc class on his 1985 KDX200, a nd it was very meaningful. Cou p led with his w in earlier in th e resched uled rained -ou t climb, this win pu shed him into the top spo t in th e seaso n's poi nts ra ce, ahead of Ch ris Rivers, who finished in th ird pla ce in both events. Sheets' second win came in the Open class . Scooter's uncl e, "Flyin' Bob" Fish er, had just s u f~ fered a broken collarbone in the previous race, and young Sheet s was riding his Su perio r Cy cle Spo rtster. And ride it he di d , na iling a 4.669-seca nd time for the win, w ell ahead of Lane "lightni ng " Schultz and his 5.005-second time on his Norton 850. Scoote r w a s n ' t d one with Uncl e Bo b :s H arl ey, 'how ever. H e re turned in th e Pu s hrod clas s and flew the big ma chine over the top in a blistering 4.630 seconds for th e win, again edging Schu ltz, who p ut his snortin' No rton over in a ve ry good 4.732 seconds for the seco nd spot.
