Shippensburg Speedway Price tags another win at Shippensburg ST finale By Len Breech SHIPPENSBURG, PA,OCT. 17 Georgie Price kept his three- ye ar u nd e feated string at Shi ppensburg Speedway go ing wit h a tri o of win s at the season-end in g sho rt track, promoted by Baer Racin g and sponsored by ABBA H ealing and A IC Syst ems and Bla ck Arrow Racin g. H e led his uncle, Bob Sweet en , for mos t of the 250cc and 600cc A fina ls an d also held off severa l challenges fro m Ricky Winsett to take the Spo rts ma n final . Sweeten led Price, Roy Miller, Raun Wood and Ja red Mees o u t of th e second turn in th e 2.SOcc A fina l. Price pa ssed Sweeten on lap fou r. Wood slip pe d into third on the same lap but thr ew a cha in, dr opping out of the race. On the final lap, Sw eeten tried to get under his nephew en te rin g th e fir st turn, but he got squirrelly, bumped into Miller and almost fell. Miller took second, while Swee ten retained third . Th e 600cc A race was some w ha t easier, as Price took the lead from Swee ten at the star t of the seco nd la p, w hile Mees stayed in third. Price remo unted his Rota x for the Sportsman final. This time he grabbed the lead from Sweeten, Rick y Win sett a n d Phil Libhart. Win se tt slipped under Sweeten for seco nd on the fourth lap and started to pressure Pri ce. Sweeten faded , an d Lib ha rt took third o n the sixth la p. Todd Kend ig took fourth ha lf a lap later. Winsett tried to ge t und er Price as they entered the thir d turn o n the six th la p , b ut th e weig h t ra tio we n t aga ins t h im . For the rest of the race, Win sett stayed o n the high line, grad ua lly culling away a t th e margin inch by inch. At th e flag. Price held off Winsett by a whee l for the wi n. Brian Eckhart too k th e Ov er 40 lead from Steve Hei ser, To m Norto n a nd Jim Cha pman. Chapman took second down the back straight on lap two . Bruce Miller dropped Norton to fifth on the sixt h lap, w hile Eckhart and Heiser ran und....r a blanket most of the race . With hvo laps to go, Heiser tried to get un der Eckhart as the y cam e off the second turn, but he cou ld n' t get his Yamaha to stick low, and Eckhart got by for the win. m m m r-: Q; .c E Q) > o Z 36 After easily winnin g the 750cc ra ce o ve r Ch.1pman and Nick Taylor , U bhart took the lead of the las t race of the dav, the 600cc Pro, from Winsett , Ed Hyd e and N'ick Arment. Baer too k the lead as the tightly bunche d pack hit the third turn on the second lap , wi th Jesse Long following him for seco nd . Jesse Lon g go t by Baer on the fifth lap. John Long too k third. Jared Ml'l"5C Red Bud Track and Tran LaRocco, Stanton get on the Grass By Larry Witmer BU CHANAN,MI,OCT. 17 Mik e LaRocco took time off from raci ng a nd testing to compe te in the last event of the year at Red Bud. Mu lti-tim e Nationa l Cha mp ion and SX champ Jeff Stanton came to ha ve so me fu n racing on th e grass track. LaR occo a nd Stanton co m peted aboard th eir 2000 Ho nda s, spotti ng the othe r riders a first-com er adv an tage. At the end of each mota , it was LaRocco an d Stan to n taking th e chec kers. Mu lti-time Enduro cha m p Dick Bu rleson was also on hand to contest the eve nt. laRocco competed in three amateu r classes, in w hich he was not scored. "I rode the new 2000 Hond as, and the y are really good," laRocco reported. "Th e handling of the new CRs is th e biggest improvement. It was really fun out the re. Usually it's WFO when I race, but tod ay I could ha ve fun and go fast. Next week I'm off to compete in the three--race World SX Series . This is good just to relax and ride with my m ends." Red Bud hold s the ann ual Grass event as the la st race of the yea r, sty ling th e track after M X tracks of yes teryea r. This was an excellent, challen ging track with natu ra l-terrain d oubles a nd triples. The soft, grassy comers w hippt'd up into hea vy braking bumps and multi-li ne be rms in man y of the com ers. Service Hond a of Hammond, Indiana, spo nsored the event. The top five rid ers in each divi· sio n received a cont ingency prize contribu ted by Tag Metals, O'Neal, Afam, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Thr ottle Jockey, Xtreme, Racer X or Th or. Th e highl ight of the day wa s the XR Track Cha mpions hip Ib ce. Some 43 XRs came to Red Bud wit h ho pes of ta kin g home tha t cove ted title. Darren Borcherding, aboard his JMS Perfo rmance XR, ripped the ho lesh ot, wi th brothers Ja y and Bobb y Wa gner rubbin g knobby tires with 1 ~1st ye a r' s cha mp, Todd Flickenger, and track an nouncer Larry Witm er. Stanton moved through the pac k on the opening laps . Borcherd- ing surrendered. the lead to Jay Wag ner around hal fw ay, po ssibly due to rear-bra ke pro blems. Classic Trailer s' Bobby Wagner was in seco nd . Sta nton mov ed up int o the fron t-runnin g pack an d wa s putting pressure on the lead ers. Witm er go t by F1 icken ger briefly, bu t "Fli ck" returned the pass for the fifth spot at the 1o-minute mark. Jay Wagn er took the chec kers. Bobb y Wagne r too k seco nd, with Borc he rd ing th ird. Stanton ba iled off over a jump w hile going for it. F1ic kenger felt that he never got up to champions hip form . The Saturday night h illcli mb a t the Ki ng City Di rt Rid ers clubground s near Mo unt Vernon, Illinois, had been rained out, so Fortner climbed aboard a bulldozer before sunrise on Sunday and scraped the slime off the hill and wo rked ove r the p it area . Th e club then ran the "rained -ou t" event, and Fortn er demonstra ted he didn' t need a tracto r to clim b the hill, as he flew his JPC CRSOO ov er the 230-foot hill in a blazing 4.445 secon ds on his second run to take the 600cc-class win and the Fast Time tro ph y. Fo r tne r need ed t hat fa st ti me to w in th e class, as he sa w his 4.661· second fi r s t- round tim e bea ten by Mar k Goodman Jr. on his Honda in the second round with a sizz ling 4.465-second run . But ch Fett ers al so br oke into the four s wit h a go od 4.971-second tim e on his Honda for third place. Lane "Lightning" Schu ltz won every class he ente red, walking off with three wins. H is first wi n ca me in the 750cc class on his Yamaha twin , wi th a 4.910-sec0nd tim e on his first ride . Bruce Fleshe r, riding a Triumph twin, was his closest cha llenger, delivering a 4.975-second time for se co nd pla ce. Fortner took th ird on hi s H ondasa ki Triple. Schultz also picked up two wins on his Norton 850. The first was in the Open class , in which his first-ro un d rid e, at S.13O seco nds , was again good enough for the win. Scott "Scooter" Sheets claimed the seco nd spo t on his Superior Cycle Sports ter wi th a S335-seco nd lime, and smooth Steve Shafer cruised ove r in 5.950 seco nds on his Ha rley for third place. T he th ird w in for Sc h ult z came in t h e Pushrod class, in w hich he carded a very good 4.821 seconds o n his sno rt in' Norton on his second rid e. He had tak en the class lead in the firs t round with a 5.223-second time, but Flesher slipped under him in seco nd- rou nd action wi th a good 5.180-second run. Randy "Buzz" Green carded a 5.272-second run on his classy Harley for the third spo t, with youn g gu ns Josh Carrier an d Sheets filling out the top five spots . Sheets en joyed a d ouble-win day, as the 15ye ar-old rider fro m Sparland, Illin ois, gra bbed the wins in the 200cc class, on his KDX200, and in the Stock class, rid in g a CR500. His Stockclass ride was especiall y impress iv e , as hi s 4.819-second winning lim e was far better than the limes turned by most of th e modified bikes running the hill. Results 50 Aura: t .
