SETRA Enduro series Round 4: Orange State Enduro Gravitt grabs it By Kenn eth King BROOKSVILLE, FL, OCT. 10 T M' S Alle n G rav itt claimed his fir st w in of th e se a so n at th e Orange State Enduro in wha t cou ld only be described as a perfect day of racin g . G ravitt - who has ha d so me ne ar misses in the first three rounds, just second s off a win - posted a score of eight p oints to take the victory over curren t Florida Trail Rid ers enduro champio n Ashley Brew er, who put in his best ride so fa r a nd finis hed the day w it h nine po ints. Team Green rider Tommy Veator dropped 13 to claim the third spot. Us ua lly it is eit her ho t or rainy or bo th at this ra ce; this yea r, the weather was gorgeous . Temp eratures in the 80s, not too much humidity, and dust-free cond itio ns on the trai l mad e for a totally enjoyable day. The Su ncoast Trail Riders put on the r a ce, w h ic h is co -sa nctio ne d b y th e Flo rida Trail Riders and SETRA. Held o n th e ou tskirts of the Croome ORV park in Brooksville, Florida, it' s a firstclass race, and a five-t ime FIR Enduro of the Year winner. The trail goes from sand y to rocky to root y to hilly, which is unexp ected in a Florida race. The trails were n' t w hooped ou t, as th ey are in most sa nd races, and there were close to 70 miles of trail, with no roads. The club placed 10 checkpoints throughout the co u rse. Not all were che ck -in / checkouts, bu t they we re placed well. At the far comer of the off-roa d park, rid ers exited th rough a ga te and right onto the trail. The firs t check came at 4.4 mil es and was basically a check-in to 8 miles of trail. All the AAs zeroed it, with th e e xcep tio n of KTM r ider Do u g Masencup and Vea tor; bot h bu rn ed it for tw o hot points. The following trail was tig ht , and had th e d is tinc tio n of bein g called "Sna ke City ." Th ere was a big "Bewa re of Snakes" notation on the ro u te shee t, which may have bu mped up the speeds a bit. The trail also contained probably the tou ghest obstacle of the day; a sma ll mo und of d irt covered wi th slick palmett o roo ts that gave rid ers fits. Bikes were strewn all along the small hill, and they crea ted an obs tacle fo r t h e AAs . M a s e n cup wa s a mong those who go t tangled in the mess. K
