The contest on ly go t closer on th e
third lap, as DeBru in , Heckm an , Lara
and Freiling all tied for the bes t score on
the th ird go- aro u nd wi th eight point s
each. William s and Win ter slipped back
in the score tally with 11 and 18 points,
respectively.
It was a virtua l d ead heat through
the sections for DeBru in an d Freiling.
Freiling knew it wo ul d take a major
blunder by the leade r in ord er for him to
steal the ~n from DeBruin - and none
w as forthcom in g . Wh en th e fun w a s
over, DeBruin had taken the win with a
four-p oi n t final-la p effo rt an d a tot a l
score of 23 poin ts. Freiling footed on ly
one more tim e than DeBruin on the final
lap, bu t Freiling s till had to settle for
second pl ace, w it h a final ta lly of 26 .

points. William s and Heckman tied at 37
points eac h; fou rth place was awarded
to Williams based on cleans .
Four com pe titors tried their hand a t

can get a wa rmu p for Sund ay's Class A
competition. On the first loop, PITS club
presiden t Ted Gan sberger cleaned all six
traps to tak e th e ea rly lead, ahead o f
Howard Galbrea th (w ith fou r poin ts);
Pa m DeBruin (wi t h 13 ); a n d Bob
Caswell (with 17).
The dab bug must have bit Gansberger on lap two. He accu mula ted the hig hes t score of any of the class riders with a
seve n-point ride and dropped to second,
behind Galbreath, who had a one-point
lap. Caswell improved wi th a four-point
lap, with DeBruin card ing a six.

state, resu lting in man y hotly contested
races.

'rid e rs Glenn Sh ea rer and Don Bizzy .
Shea rer too k the nu mber-one plate with
2-1-2-1 finishes . Bizzy was a close second with his 1-2-1-2 finishes .
Bizzy claimed the holeshot in the first
m ot a , foll owed by Jeff Newma n a n d

long as the wind doesn't knock us over

Newman captured the second-moto
holesh ot , followed by Bizzy and Kipp
Fletcher. Altho ug h Shea re r came
thr o ugh the first turn in fifth , he had
ta ken ove r the lead by the end of th e
first lap, an d he main ta ined it for th e
rest of the mo to, hounded by Bizzy, for
the wi n.
" You we re r e len t less! " Shearer
exclaimed to Bizzy at the finish . "Every
t ime I looked b ack , y ou w ere right
there! "

in timida ting," Bizzy smiled. "On ce you
ge t behind somebody, the y're so irri table."
N ewma n cla imed th e th ird -mot a
ho lesho t on Sunday. Bizzy and Shearer
wer e close beh ind . Bizzy took the lead
on th e first lap, leaving Newman and
Sh ea re r to ba ttl e for second . Shearer
pa ssed Newman on the third la p com ing off An ima l Leap but was unable to
catch up to Bizzy, who too k the win .
Shea rer took the holeshot honors in
the fourth mot o. Women's Expert Bonnie Warch and Bizzy foll ow ed . Bizzy
passed Warch on the second lap, while
Shea rer developed a comfortable lead .
By the white-flag lap, Bizzy had closed
the distance on Shea re r, but tim e ran
out. Shea rer captured the lead and the
overa ll. Bizzv finished in second , followed by Wa~ch.
Another group battling the gus ty
winds was the 125cc Novice class . As 33
race rs th u ndered off the s ta rt, Corey
Murp hy took the lea d . Patrick Te rry,
Bra n don Norton, Mi ke Ho rva th and
Blake Tirman were in hot pursuit. Du ring the first lap, Ter ry charged in to first,
a nd Tirm an took fo ur th. Terry ma intained the lead to the finish , wi th Murph y on his back tire . Tirma n sque aked
by Norton during the white-flag lap to
claim third .
Before the secondmoto, Murphy predict ed, "I'm going to stay on two w heels
and d o my best."
His two w heels took him through the
holeshot turn in first. No rton and Horvath slid into seco nd an d third, wit h Tirm an ba ck in six th. Ti rma n propell ed
himself past three rid ers on the first lap
to take third. His m omentum ca rried
him pas t Norton on the second lap, and
he set hi s sig h ts on Murphy. Murphy
slid ou t in a turn during the fou rth lap ,
and Tirm an took the lead to the finish.
Norton held on to second. Horvat h was
third .
" I g o t a bad sta rt , " said th e

Skateboards-backed Tirm an . "It' s a little
mu ddy out there - makes it hard to see. I
go t un derneath 91 [Murphy] in a tu rn
an d he slid ou t and fell. I also go t a bad
start in my first mo to; this win makes up
for it."
Terrv claimed the third-mo ta holeshot
on Sunday. Mike Kelley, Brad Daugh erty
and Tirman took chas e . Ti rman got
caught in a third-turn pileup bu t managed to recover quickl y and put pressure
o n Dau gherty in th ird. After pa ssing
Daugh e rt y, Tirma n made a valiant
attempt to catch Terry for first, but Terry
rode a consistent moto to the finish, followed by Tirma n and Daug herty.
Jason Jeffery, Murph y a nd Norton
took the lead in the fina l 125cc Novice
moto . Ti rman came through th e fir st
turn in se ven th bu t wor ked hi s w ay
through the pack and into second place
by the end of the thir d lap . Norton took
the fourth-moto win, wit h Tirman close
beh ind . Tirman captured fir st ov era ll
with his 3-1-2-2 finish es.
"I jus t wanted to sta y cool and calm,"
sa id a jubilant Tirman. "Seco nd wa s
en ough for the overall. I've got blown
for k seals, so my su spension w asn 't
holding up very well. My front brake
was about to go o ut. I'm ju st g lad I
could finish ."
Terry Fowler ca used a co uple of
aftershocks himself in the 125/ 25Occ Pro
mo tos. The 125cc Pr os s ta rted in gate
one . Fowler a nd the 250cc Pros sta rted
in ga te two. Not only did Fow ler seize
the ho leshot in all fou r motos, he also
ca ugh t and passed a ll but two of the
seven 125cc Pros in three o f th e fou r
mot os. Fowler took the 250cc Pro wi n
and also swept the Vet Expert class with
firsts in all four moto s.
Rookie Pro Du sty Wa lt er s' 1-1-2-1
fi n is hes ea rned him th e number-on e
plate in the 125cc Pro class. His only loss .
wa s to Tim Beatty, who claim ed second
ove rall.
Sean O' Co nnor was d ominant in the
125cc Intermediate class, finishing 1-1-12. Th e fi rs t- a n d th ird-moto b attl es
between O'Connor and Turbo Reif had
the crow d on its feet. O' Co nno r's only
loss for th e weeke n d was to Na than
Craig in the fourth moto.

At th e California State Championships at
Glen Helen Raceway, Glenn Shearer (40)
set the pace in the Senio r Novice class,
going 2· 1·2·1 for th e class overall. In th e
fourt h mot e, he led from start to finish,
hounded by seco nd-overall fi nisher Don
Blzzy (15). In the bac kg round, Shearer 's
wife and four daughters run to
con gratulate their hero.
