Events Lincoln Trail M olosports Simpson hits a homer By Honnalo ra Hubbard CASEY, IL OCT. 10 , h is wa s a w eek end fo r true motocross en thusias ts. With all the rain leading up to the eve nt, expectations weren't ver y high , but the LTM crew, fan s; a nd riders kept th e spirits high . Saturd ay's sched u le w as shortened to one mot a per class in or der to save the track for the next day's event. Luckily , b y th e mid dl e of th e d ay th e su n came au t, and by the time the Pro s took to th e tr ack, th ings w er e sha p ing up. The 100-foo t Casey d ownhill tripl e was o pene d , a n d the Pro s put on quite a show for the spectators. In the 125cc Pro clas s, there were 19 riders on the line. Ben Riddl e took firs t, Jeff Gibson p laced seco nd, and David Oe rtel came in th ird . Local favori te Jeremy Brewington finished an impressive fifth. Sneaking into the top five in the fourth p o sition was Rob b y McQuary. Riddle was a two-time overall winner for the d a y, fini sh in g first in the 250cc A class . Again, Gibson wa s right behind him to take seco nd , followed by Robb ie Skaggs wi th a 7-2 finis h to place third . Cla rk Stiles finished fourth, and Oett el took the fifth spo t. The Fou r-Stroke Na tio na l class was the high est-flyin g class of the d ay. KTM rid er Kelly Sm ith finished first overall. Jim N eese flew on his Yama ha for the second -pla ce honors; w ith Stiles, Todd Downs and Illinois' own Nate Eslinger finishing third, 'fourth and fifth, respectivel y. Th e amateur cla sses ha d plenty of excitem en t, Ridi ng in the 125cc B class , Robert Simpso n h it a "home ru n," sta yin g ou t in fro n t for firs t place overa ll. Dustin Lu st ig fin ish ed seco nd in the first mot a , and the n battled in the se con d mota wit h Brand on Petty and Clint Johnson . Lusti g cross ed the line fourth, garne ring a 2-4 for seco nd overall. Pet ty cro sse d the li ne secon d in th at mot a af te r so me troub le in th e firs t m o ta , earn ing ninth overall. Oakland, Illinois' John so n fough t hard in eac h mot a for hi s 4-3 fi nis hes a n d th e th ird-pl ac e plaqu e. The 12Sec C rid er s learned that you ha ve to fin ish both m otos to have a chance at a top spot. Du e to mechanical difficulties, cras hes, and ju st plain bad luck, it was a struggle to cross the finish line in the first mota . Nine rid ers headed back to the pit s befor e they saw the checkered fla g . Jim Currie s a w th e checkers first in both mot os. John Brewer of Westfield, Illin ois, took a second and an eighth, taking home second for the da y. Dou g Moffitt's 3-10 was equal to thi rd place overall. Lustig hit tfie track ag ain in the 250cc B rac e. This tim e he went 1-1 for first overall. Sometimes thre e plus th ree ' equals two ; this wa s the case for Honda rid er Josh Decker, who earned second pl ac e with 3-3 showings . After some struggles in the first mota and a seventh-place fini sh , Hill sb oro, Illino is' Ad am Wright rallied back in the second mot a to a second -place finish . This com- T bination wa s good for third overall. Mitchell Stortzum and Greg Pow ell rounded out the top five. In ' t h e 250cc C cla ss , 17 rid ers attempted to walk away with the firstplace plaque. Brett Herrick was the one who reached the goal. After coming in behind newcomer Mike Walls in th e first mota, Herrick crossed the line first in the second mot a . Walls won the first mota and finished th ird in mota two, placing second for the da y . Dani el Creeg, Ruric Doggett and Neil Huffman completed the top five. By the afternoon, the track conditions w ere more th an good en ou gh for th e 65cc a nd 50cc cl a ss es to g e t in th e ir mot os, Lead in g the 65cc class was Phil o Petricic. The top 50cc honors went to Dillon Hall (for the seniors) and Jacob Th om a s (fo r th e jun iors ). Both 50cc classes had a fu ll class and wer e able to score full points.
