It was the last race of the season, th e last N orth Amer ican Sp or t Bike race ever, and the last race Josh H ayes would ru n for th e EMGO . Valvoline Suzuki team. Next yea r he moves up to the Erion Honda team, an d, with PACE Mo tor Sports essentially bu ying out NASB's Roger Edmondson, this was to be the final ASB event. Hayes mad e th e most of the situation , brushing off an early challenge to bookend his season with wins at Da ytona International Speedway, adding the final EBC Brakes Sportbike race ever to the one he won here in the spring, as clouds rolled over the 3.56-mile circuit. There were some early pretenders, but, by the second lap, the GSXR600-mounted Ha yes was in control and would continue to stam p his au thority on the event to the end. "Th ere was a bi g clump of th em," Hayes said of the ea rly pack. "I di d n't know if I could ge t away, bu t I was sure go ing to try." It w ou ld n't be accurate to say that he sped away, b ut he re m ov ed h im s e lf from the pack with s teady precision until, at the end, he had a secure win. Tw igg Cycle's Timothy Bemis derfer was second o n his de-tu ned Su zuk i GSX-R750, with Hayes' team ma te Joh n T: Hopkins third in his first EBC Spo rtbike race. Hayes won by 2.595 secon ds . The fin al se ries titl e went to David Joseph Rose, who finished nin th today. He'd co me into th e race with a commandi ng lead and was able to maintain it, despite his finish. "It' s rea l big," Rose said. "This is the championship I wanted to win." The 42-rider field wa s at the mercy of Hayes before very long. Hopkins had gotten the lead in front of Hyd-M ech Saws Owen Weichel, with Hayes close by, along with Bemisderfer. Weichel took the lead in turn one on the second lap and held it through the infield . When they hit the West Banking fo r the second tim e Hayes made hi s move, powering under Weichel for the lead he wouldn't relinquish for long. Hopkins came by too, so Weichel was aropped to third wit h Bemisderfer fou rth, the lead qua rtet slipping away, the next spo ts being bitterly contested . Hopkins and Weichel u sed the draft to mot or by Hayes on the fro nt straig ht with Hayes comi ng back by the pair in th e Int e rna tion al H orse s hoe . Weichel was back to third as they exited the chicane later in the lap. By the fou rth lap it was clear Hayes was tryi ng to make a break, and he did, ed ging away to leave sec ond place to the trailing trio. Litt le by little Hayes made su re he was too far in front to be d rafted, and the win w as his. Second wouldn' t be deci ded u ntil the final ru n to the flag. Weiche l was mostly at th e fro n t of the p ursui ng th reesome with Hopkins next and Bemisder fer in danger of losing tou ch . Then, on the final lap, the three tightened back up an d it was anybody's race. Hopki ns led Bemisderfer and Weichel into tu rn one, and tha t' s how they'd make the run clear through to the chicane. Coming out of the chicane, on th e run across NASCAR Turn Four and the tri-oval, Bemisderfer took advantage of hi s posi tion, using the draft to finis h nearly next to, yet just in fron t of, Hopkins, to take s eco n d . Weichel was four th. "I didn't know if I was going to get on the bo x or no t," Bemisderfer sa id. "I geared the bike for the backstraight, and coming down the tri-oval it was bouncing off the rev limiter. I didn't know if I could keep up at the finish line." • "I d idn 't k now Bemi s derfer was there," Ho pkins said. "Coming out on the last lap I thought I had it..! just got d rafted by." Weichel was a shadow third . Fourth went to Mike Ciccotto on a Bue ll Ligh tning 1200, w ith a slight cushion on the figh t for sixth . (Above) Josh Hayes (3) leads Owen Weichel (18) in the EBC Brakes Sportblke race . Hayes took the win, with Weichel ending up fourth. (Below) John Hopkins (5) holds off TImothy Bemisderfer (hidden) in their battle for se cond, a pos ition ultimately atta ined by Bemlsderfer. Th at was fo ug h t th r ou ghout by a co nsta n tly evo lving p a ck w hic h cha nged places repeatedl y on the fina l lap. Cycles 128 Jim Lester took fifth just in front of Gill Studio'S Joseph Gill and num be r-o ne plate ho lder Bria n livengood . Da vid Josep h Rose earned th e plate by finishing ninth, bu t he'll never ge t a chance to race wi th it. eN Daytona Intemational Speedway Daytona Beach, Florida Res ults: October 24, 1999 (Round 5 of 5) EBC BRA KES SPORTB IKE: I.
