Coming to the stripe they we re sid e by side, with Mich ael on the upside for the win . "T ha t was a close one rig h t the re , es pecially co ming into th e ch ica ne," Michael said . "My back whee l cam e up in the air going in to it." Michael credited his success with a gearing cha nge hjs tea m mad e la te in the day. "Looks like it worked," he said. Michael was aga in in the right place at the righ t time in the Ama teur Lightweight Sp ortsman race, a nd gr id ded and flagged off just beh ind the Expe rt Lig h tw eig h t Sports ma n . The Fayet teville, North Carolina, rid er was at the he a d of th e Amateu r Lig h tweight Sportsman field w hen the race was red flagged, an d called official, on the sixth of seven laps. Because the en tire field hadn't completed the fifth lap, the race wa s scored from the end of the fou rth, the last one everyone had completed . Regardless of th e le ngth , Michael w a s clearly bes t in cl ass, r idin g hi s Kawasaki EX540 twin to a comfortable lead over the Harley-Davidson 1200 of Guy Edwa rds . Wh e n the ra ce was called , Michael had wo rked his way into th ird overall , wi th on ly two Experts ahea d of him. Michael also took a third in the Amateu r GT Lig h ts , finis hing beh in d Jeff Mi tc he ll an d M ark Roze ma . He was fourth in th e Amateu r Midd leweight Superbike, won in a ro mp by Edward Hosack, the lone Yama ha R-6 in front of a quartet of Hondas. H os a ck a lso wo n the A ma te u r Heav yweight Su persport, the first race run on Sunday morn ing. He won it from the fro nt, lead ing all the way and takin g a second a lap from the field , winni ng by 7.951 seconds. "I ke pt on thin kin g they were righ t behind me ," the Fort Lau d erdale, Flori- da , resi dent said. "I just kept my head down and hau led ass. 1wasn't expec tin g this at all. Thi s is my first year of racing ." Triuillus Lewis and ProFab Motor cycle Serv ice's Joseph Capelli fought over secon d for the second half of the ra ce with the order changing tw ice on th e final lap - with Lew is getting the nod to nudge Capelli at the stri pe. Mich ael Cu sano took back fourth on the final lap from Steve Young. In addition to finishing second to Micha el, Tim Coch ra n was also the runner -up to Hosack in the Am ate ur Middleweight Superbike race . His best work came in a few other classes, the Amateur Midd leweight Gran d Prix an d the Amateur Middleweigh t Super sport. Coch ran bolted from the third row to ta k e th e lea d in t he A ma te u r M id dl ewe ight GP on his Honda CBR600 and va nis hed. When he finally got away it was posthaste and certain. At the end of th e seve n -la p , 25-mil e ra ce , h e h a d 12.292 seconds in hand . "Finally," Cochran sai d , relieved at win ni ng afte r his pair of seconds . "I ca n ' t b eli e ve' it. 1 jus t p u t m y h e a d down. The plan was to get away in fron t a nd b r e a k away from the draft. It wo rked ." The con test for second wasn' t as clear cut wi th three rid ers taking turns in the spot, Page Ga things the last of the thr ee and th e one in fro nt at the che ckered fla g . Ed Cobb was a close th ird with Michael Cusa no nea rby in fourth. Cochra n's win in the Amateur Mid d le w ei ght Supers p o rt was equ a lly autho ritative. Cochran led the first start, which was red-flagge d, then led the second start an d every lap thereafte r. Th ere wasn't a lot of do ubt abo ut this one, and Coch ran had his second win. Second we nt to Migu el Angel Pena, 10.184 seconds behind Cochran at th e end of the seven-lap, 25-mile race . Pena was well clear of th ird pl ace, the spo t which first three, then two riders foug ht over to the flag.
