Texas S Championship Series, Round 4 tate Events By Deb Hershman mER, IX, OCT. 10 oing into round four of the fiverace Texas State Cha m pionshi p Series, held a t Swa n Cycle Park, th e run for the titl e in th e 80cc (14-16) was too close to ca ll betw een Hondapowered Ja me s Pino a nd Suzu ki rid er Ernie Phillips. Tied for the lead wit h 67 points apiece, bo th riders boast a 1-2-3 tally going in to tod a y ' s rac e. Aus tin Jones is chasing them in thi rd w ith 58 po ints and a 4-2-4 tally. In round four, mo ta one had Phillips shooting in fro nt, with Pina do ing th e "tail-pipe two-s tep," looking for a route to th e lead positi on . Mid wa y through mota one , Phillips and Pin o were st ill joined at the fende rs, a few bike lengths ahead of Jones, as the trio pu lled wa y to th e che ckers, with Phillips taking ' th e w in, followed by Pino and Aus tin. . Recovering from a slower sta rt, Pin o ca me ou t in th ird , a few p aces behind Phillips and Jones. As th e lap s ti cked b y, Phillips m a inta in ed a nd s lig htly incre ase d h is lea d ove r Jones, wh ile Pino closed in an d almost caught Jones at the checkers : "This was a good race, bu t I wanted a better holeshot in the second race," said Pino. "I started catching up at the end, and that was good." " I th o u g h t it w as good I got the h oleshot ," Ph illips said after wi nning the overa ll. "I could hear someone right b ehi nd m e m o s t of the race a n d I though t it was Pino, but I was n't su re who it was until the last la p, w hen I p ulled ahead. " The two frie nds were asked to pred ict wh ich of the m wo uld wi n t h e se ries. Both grinned and agreed it was too close to call. . "Th e w innin g ride will hav e to be fast, wi th no DNFs," Pino said . "Yeah," Phillips agreed . "I had one DNF ea rlier in th e se ries, an d I ca n ' t have any more if I want to wi n!" I Anot her close series race is the 250cc No vice con test, wit h only 10 points separating the top six rid ers. With 57 points goi ng into round fou r, Glenn He rbe rt, the series leader, finish ed with a strong w in in mot a one. A ba ttle fo r second between Jason Lovell and Brian Riggan heate d up th e d i rt. A few seco n ds behin d them , a five-rid er skirmis h started between Kevin Lovell, Ryan Breau x, Mark Ray , Aaron Mitchell a nd Sha un Rom e ro . Fo ll o w in g Herbe rt at t h e checke rs, Jason Lovell powered a head of Riggan. Brea ux ca me in fou rth, w ith Kevin Lovell rou ndi ng ou t the top five. In mota two, Romero led the gro up ou t of the gate .by a wheel over Breau x. At the end of lap one, Romero held on to his lead as Kevin Lovell moved into second , with a d et ermined He rbert on his rear tire. Rom ero, Kevin Lovell and Herbert took off in a three-way ru n for the top spot , and at the end of lap two, Ch an ce Miles had moved to fourth, in fron t of Breaux, Jason Lovell and Rigga n. On lap thr ee, Kevin Lovell moved up and settled in to the lead, with Herbert wor king hard to catch up. In a lastlap power drive, Miles moved through th e p ack to claim se co n d pl ac e a nd crossed the fin ish line after the lead er, Kevin Lovell. The whi te-flag lap w as a white-knuckle d u el b etween th e top four riders, who all showed great talent and determination . "In the first mota, I had a slow start and had to w ork m y w ay up , bu t in mota two I go t a b etter start and ju st rode ha rd . I' m ti ed for second, th ree points behind H e rb ert, but thi s race a u ld help mov e ie u p in th e s ta nd in g s," com m ented Ke vi n Love ll af te r receivin g congra tul a tions fro m his twin bro ther Jason . "This is a toug h gro u p a t the top of th is se ries . Hopefully, if I can ride hard for the rest of the series, 1 will come ou t the overall winner." The top five of round four were Herbert 0-3), Kevin Lovell (5-1), Miles (6-2), Breaux (4-5) and Riggan (3-6). In m ota one, Lewis got the ju m p off the gate, b ut Clement fought back as he wheeled past Lewis in a midfield charge through Catfish Co rner to take the lead . Clement and Lewis clocked in at an even pace as th ey ju mped over the fin is h line a fter th e firs t lap . Int erm ed iat e rider Orion Tu rbyfill a nd Expe r t rider Sam Red mond hea ted u p their own battle for p o s ition behind t h e tw o lead e r s . Cleme n t open ed a sma ll lead as Lew is drafted in his wa ke, and the two leaders put some distan ce on the battl e for third . Redm ond held h is p o sit ion behind Clemen t and Lewis. On the w hite-flag lap , Cleme nt appeared to have mechan ica l tro uble a nd limped to th e lin e as Lewis pull ed h a rd o n th e th ro ttl e to close in . In a p h o to fi ni s h, C le me n t claimed the checkers by a knobby! In mota tw o , Cl ement a n d Lew is were back at it in a close race in fron t of Bobby Meche and Redmond.
