Hackbarth flew his KTht over th e top o f the 150-foot hill in . 1.055 seco nds in the first rou nd to set an early fast time. He was challenged hard by Na tional Cha mp ion Brent Stewart, who blas ted o ver in 4 .130 seconds. Ste wa r t h ad previ ousl y been u n beate n in Distri ct 15 and 17 clim bs this ye a r, a nd he had tw o fas t tim es in 1999 to hi s ~edit. A light rain was fa lling and it co ntinued into the secon d ro und , making the hill much more di fficult to rid e, but nea rly all the riders took their second-rou n d opportu nities. Stewa rt w as quick aga in but ca rne up jus t a bit short wi th i1 4.173-second time, a nd he had to set tle for secon d place. Hackbar th nearl y pulled off a double wi n, as he blazed over th e top in 4.177 sec o nds in the 600cc class. And y Fortner claimed the th ird spot on his Hon d a w it h a 4.222-second time, with Eric Wheel wri gh t close be hind in 4.255 second s.
