With their primary ma chines o n the West Coast fo r th e ational s w in g , Roe d er and Kevin Varn es would be on backup bikes . This p resented no problem for Roed er, wh o ha s a few Harleys th at a re a lmos t as g ood a s hi s a ti o na l bikes, but for Varn es, it was a differ ent s tory. After a phon e call or tw o, they located the Phil Wick ersham -owned Harl ey th at took Rusty Roge rs to his only Nation al win at Ha g erstown. In fact , wh en th e bik e a rri ved , it s till had Roger s' number-57 plates att ached . At th e .s ta rt, Ke vin Varnes sli pped into the lead, holding off Roeder, Clark a nd Mike Va rnes . As the rid ers h it th e third turn , Lewis held the lead ahead of Winsett and Joe Eades, wit h Veeder mired mid -. pack. " I couldn't shift it off two, s o I reached d own and pulled it in to gear," Veeder revea led later. Lewis and Winsett again pulled clear of the pack.
