Riddl e, utilizing an outside line. Wa lker took the mo to win wit h ease. Horto n claimed second. Riddle was third, wit h Neel fourt h. Walker was the top dog off the gate in mot a two, with Horton a nd Ridd le hot on his heels. By the seco nd lap , Ho rton had taken the lead . Riddle followed suit on the third lap by taki ng an ins ide line through Wild cat Corner. Riddle set h is sig h ts o n Horton . Th e two cha llenged e a ch o t he r throu ghout the remaind e r of the mota , with Ho rton chalking up the win , Riddl e taking second and Walker third . Jim Chester came out first a ro u n d turn one in the first 250cc Pro mota, followed by Rid dl e, Wa lker a nd Clark Stiles. Sti les imm ed ia te ly piloted his machine by Walker to tak e over thi rd . Walke r th e n rode off th e si de of the tra ck . Ridd le wa s in the d river' s se at befor e the end of lap one . Horton , rid ing a fou r-stroke machine, got caught back in the pack on the start and had worked his way to sixth by lap two. He began picking off riders and mo v in g throu gh th e p a ck. H ort on worked his way to fourth and maneuvered his ma ch ine by Jeff Gibson a nd then Stiles , and th en b egan to gai n ground on Riddle. At halfway, Riddle was riding w ith Horton on his rear fend er , waiting for th e fresh ma n Pro to mak e a mista ke . Hor ton took the lead, thou gh only for a short distance, as Riddle recovered and re gai ned i t. T he pa ir s wa p p e d p ositi ons s everal tim es . H ort on fina lly remained in first , wit h Riddle right on him . "I go t an okay holesh ot and Wa lker pa ssed me through the G ra vity Cavity," Riddl e ex p la ine d, "a n d then , in th e wh oops, I regain ed it. At the end of the mota , lappers we re in th e way, and I knew I only had one oth er place to pass him. So I just d ecided to ride safe and finis h seco nd for the mota. " "The mota wa s too lon g," said Horton . "I did not have a ver y good start. I knew Ben go t a good start, and I knew if I cou ld ge t by him, I would hold on to the lead. Ben pressured me aliI wanted . He put up a n awes ome rid e. At o ne poin t, in a s ma ll, tight sec tion of th e tra ck, we repassed each othe r severa l . times. It wa s a grea t rid e." Bv th e second 250cc Pro mota , the bright , su nny d ay had turned clou dy and overcast, wit h light rain an d wind . Riddl e shot off the ga te like a bulle t as Jim Neese, Stiles and Walker followed . eese gave Ridd le a run for the mon ey. Hor ton sa t in the sta nd s, watching th e race, having hurt his hand earlier in the Four-Stroke race . Neese rode out of co n tro l th rou g h the SuperCross Six but managed to. sav e it as Walker, Stiles and Gibson chased him. Midway through the mot a, heavier ra in made the track surface somewhat slick. Ieese backed off, riding more cautiou sly. The second half of the mota wa s uneve ntfu l, as s teadv rain fell. Gibson had bik e problem s two la ps befo re the finish and p u lled off the track. Riddle filed bv for the wi n, followed bv Neese, Wa l ke~ and Ches ter. Stiles di d 'not fare as well, taki ng ninth. "This wa s my second overa ll wi n in th e 250 Pro class," Riddle sai d . "I also won at Birch Creek in round tw o . Th e tr ack was s lic k. It w a s lik e r id ing on pavem ent with gravel on it. I knew Horton wa s not go ing to ra ce be fore th e mot o. Actu ally, I was hoping he would ra ce . I w a s a littl e concer ned a bou t Neese." In the first Four-Stroke moto, Kentucky' s Rodney Carrier was qu ick off the ga te and around the first turn as Walk er m o v ed by for t h e lead, fo llowed by Stiles, chased by Horton a nd Neese. Hor ton went down at the finishline jump, landi ng in t he ha y bales. Horton was slow in re mo unting, as he had to ma ke some bike repairs. Wal ker , mea nwhile, ha d a co mfor ta ble lea d . Walker s ty led hi s mach in e a cr oss th e finish line for the win, with Sm ith second, Stiles third , Neese fourth and Horton fifth. "T hey had watered the fac e of th e jump," Horton rema rked . "M y whole bike slid out from und er me . The handlebars go t pu shed down. I continu ed to p ush th e en tire mo to, b ut I w as also havin g fun. I wasn' t going to kill myself, because I am rid ing six motos tod ay." Smith domina ted the second mo ta as Neese, Walker, Horton and Stiles tried to catc h up to him . By lap fou r, Smith, Neese , Walker and Horto n still rode within inches of on e another. Horton made a success ful pass by driving by on the inside line to go by Walker. Horton th en m ov ed b y eese a n d t ri ed fo r Smit h. Smith go t side ways through the whoo p section but held on to first. Hor ton was right on Smith, waiting for just the right mom ent. eese fell off the pace in third and Walker remained in fourth . With tw o laps to go, Horton fell off the p ace. McMurry , who hai ls fro m ne arby Ren o , joined other wi nne rs in d ed icat ing his victo ry to the memory of p op u lar loca l hero Freddie Wiec hers. The mood qui ckly turned from so mbe r to joyous w he n Fredd ie' s dad and mentor, Frit z Wie chers , roared out onto the tra ck on his Harley-Davidson. As fan s cheer ed a nd riders rai sed their hand s up in su pport, Frit z thundered through the traffic for two u nforgettable laps, and from that momen t on, the fun had re turned to Fernley. After the tribute laps, the M Wiec he rs family thanked the rid ers and encouraged eve ryone to make the mos t of a g reat day for racing . As a fin a l encouragement, Frit z reminded everyo ne of Freddie ' s . dedi cation to motocross excellence. "Ride ha rd and have fun ," said Fritz. "That's what Fred die did, and what he would have wanted all of you to do." "Q u ic k" Gilber t Ch ick took th at advice to heart and roosted off the line to the hol esh ot in th e first Over 30 Expert moto, with Eric Schacht, Richard Mannschreck, McMurry a nd Al McElroy in tow. Chick p layed hare to the h ounds as he pull ed awa y from th e pursuing pack. McMurry made his way to seco nd p lace b y mid ra ce , turning eve r- faster laps. As the race entered the fina l lap, McMurry w a s knock in g on Chick's ba ck d oor. Chick briefly squ irted away entering the ba ck section, but McMurry twi sted it even harder and pulled a longs id e Ch ick in the switchb ack s. McMurry b an g ed cas es with C h ic k down th e n e xt s tr a ig h t - a n approach to passing that McMu rry later admitted hasn't always worked well for him in the past. "Usua lly, I co me up wi th' a mouth full of sand," said McMurry, "but th is time I made the pass." A fter sq uee zi ng into t h e lea d, McMu rry stayed ou t front until the end . As th e racers received the ch ecke re d flag, it was McMu rry firs t, followed by Chick, Schacht and Man nsc hreck; McElroy d id not finish. . Chick pro mised mo re for the second mota, and ind eed he started well - bu t there was no denying McMurry on this dav , The Yama ha race r was once aga in out front at the mota's end, and the to p fou r repeated their first-mota finishing order, earning ma tching overa ll sco res . for the day. McMurry, Chick, Man nschr eck and Schach t banged bars again in the Over The Hill Gan g race as they vied for the Exper t-class wi n. W h en it was over, Mc M u rry was t he cha m pio n , with Schac ht second and Mannschreck third . Another ra ce r wh o ra ck ed up the w ins was Tim Dyer, who has an unbroken streak of motD wins in the Ov er 40 Exp ert cla ss that rea ches ba ck severa l ra ce s .
