Acree knew tha t the waving yellow
flags at Yoder's cras h site wo uld benefit
him an d hamper Ju nge, w ho was faster
in th at sec tion. If the no-passing zone
remained for the res t of the short six-lap
forma t, Acree was sure he could hold
off Jung e to the checkered flag. The
large pack ba ttling for third th rough
13th was headed up by Prussiano, who
was under p ressure fro m Josep h Temperato and Scotty Van Scoik. The yellow
flags di d indeed rem ain to the end of the
race, and Acree used them to his advantage, nipping Junge a t the finish line by
th ree -t enth s of a secon d . Prussia no

DiSalv o's ma in titl e rival in th e 125cc
class, Ben Spies , had to pull a rabbit ou t
of his hat just to get on the track, as his
trail er (with all his race bikes) cou ld n' t
ma ke it to th e Indi a na trac k fro m h is

At the fina le of the CMXR Summer Ser ies, Gio·
vann i Filippo n e slid to bo th 125cc Begin ner
mota w ins with a litt le bit of help from Bra nd{ln
Ahmitstead, w ho di d a litt le slid in g o ut of his
ow n .
The h o le s h o t of the fi rst mo to went to
Ahmitstead, and he was follow l.-d by Filippone
'a nd Garrett Metcalf. Ahmi tstead pulled away
from the pack. Filippone and 'Metcalf battled fo r
seco nd, v..;th the res t of the pa ck lin gering in the
du st o f th e front trio. Wh en the p ack ca m e
around for the third lap , Filippone and Met calf
wer e in fron t. Ahmitstead slid ou t in the back
behind th e tree s a nd w a s left to battl e w it h
S h a wn Fox fo r third pl a ce . W ith tw o la p s
re maining , it looked like Filippone was goi ng to
w in the ra ce w ith ei;!se, but Me tca lf put o n a
cha rge a nd m oved to within a seco nd of the
w inn er, Filip pone. Ahmits tead rounded ou t the

The Sl.~ nd mo ta I(l()ked like it was go ing to
be a three-way battle be tween Filippo ne, Metcalf a nd Ahmitstead. When the scream ing 125s
cres ted the first turn, Filippone was in the lead ,
followl.-d by Ah mitstea d and then Metca lf, w ho
wa s no w rid ing a Yamaha bo rro wed fro m Jos h
Tupa . Ah mitstead pa ssed Filippon e before the
end of th e seco nd lap and loo ked to be in contro l w hen h e sli d hi s Yam ah a o u t one more
tim e . This tim e he was abl e to reco ver before
losing too mu ch g ro u n d to Filippone. Th en
Ah mitstea d closed th e gap o n Filippone a nd
the ba ttle began . The tw o riders went back and
fo rt h throug h the infield secti o n, almost takin g
t;'ach ot her out on numerou s occasio ns . Filippone already had the ov erall; a ll he had to do
wa s finis h second, but he w ent aft er the moto
win.
With the white flag wa ving, the two riders
slid their way arou nd the rough, slippery track '
for the last time. Ahrnitstead was un able to close
the gap going up the hill , and his hopes so o n
va nished as the two riders went int o the trl."es.
With a gia nt lea p off of Devil's Drop, Filippone
took the chec ke rs , foll o w ed by Ah mitstead.
Round ing ou t the podium was Metcalf in third .
