SBR won the six-hou r event at the Putnam Park Road Cou rse by six laps to increase their point s lead in the overalI se ries cha mpions hip as welI as in th e PireIIi· Heavyweigh t Su p er bi ke cla ss. SBR' s domination h as been aided by seve ral unfortunate probl ems that have p la gu ed th eir ma in co m peti tio n , Arclight Su zuki Ra cin g. Arcl ig h t led early in the race, but a persistent electrical gre mlin put th em 10 lap s down a t the end of the race. Second in th e ove ra ll En d u ra nce Champ ionship and firs t in th e Med iumweight Superbike titl e chase is th e R enigma tic grou p of en du rance regulars known as Army of Darkness, from the Washington D.C. area . AOD has been racing the Se ries for many yea rs but never with the measure of success they have enjoyed this season. Taking over the championship points chase in the Heavyweight Super Stock class was th e Dawson ville, Georgia based D&D Racing, formerly kn own as Team Twister. D&D got off to a s low start in the series, cras hing at the op ening round and then mis sin g the seco nd r ound , whi ch put th em n earl y 150 p oint s behind in th e cha m p io ns hi p hunt. After a quick name change, D&D cam e ba ck to th e s eries with a vengeance, w inn ing the ne xt five Heavyweigh t Supe r Stock races in a row , with a career- best second overall at Road Atlanta. Tea m C hi cago Raci n g le ad s th e Mediumweight Super Stock class. Tea m Chicago has campaign ed the series for a nu mber of yea rs. SBR's lead rid er, Glenn Szarek, mai ntained the top pos ition for the majority of the firs t hour after coming to grips wi th a cha ttering front tire. Arcligh t Suz uki he ld on to second . place during the opening hour, d espite telltale signs of the troubles to come. At the close of the first hour, both SBR and Arclig ht had a one- lap lead over the rest of the field , head ed by the Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R600 Su perbi ke of Tapeworks Ra cin g, p uttin g in a n excelIent rid e to nail d own third overalI. In fourth overalI was the Missouri-b ased Tea m Dread ed, on a Yamaha YZF R-I , third in the Heavyweight Superbike class, just 30 seconds ahea d of the battl e bet ween D&D an dAOD. Durin g th e seco n d hour, Arcli ght Suzuki's mysteriou s problem s ap pea red to subside, and Tra y Batey handed off to Lee Acree to continue the ir cha rge to the front. Acr ee put in many smooth and consis tent la ps, handling the heavy traffic welI to open a 27-second ga p over the defending champions at the end of the seco n d ho u r . Both Arcl ight a nd SBR were alrea dy two la ps ahead of th ird p laced Team Dreaded, w hi ch in turn had a la p in h an d over th e top 600cc racer , Tapeworks Racing, in fourth. 1800-C ROTCH-ROCKET m o ved their Heavyweight Superbike Su zu ki GSXR750 ahead of AOD to take over fifth during the second hour. With Chris Hughes on the Arclight Su zuki GSX-R750, the electrica l gre mlins that have p lagued the team several tim es this seaso n r eapp eared , a n d Hugh es brou ght the ailing bike into the pi ts for d iagnosis. Team owner Chuck Warren quickl y checke d th e bike to d etermine a course of action and th en se n t th e sp u ttering rac e b ike ba ck ou t while the team mad e preparati on s for a comp lete electrical-system replacement. Arclig ht slid back to third in the avera 11 results at the end of the fou rth hour, a full eight laps beh ind SBR and one lap d o wn to th e re juve nat ed Tapew ork s Racing, in seco nd overalI and first in the Mediumweight Su perbike class. AOD was a me re fou r seconds away from catching the struggling Arcl igh t bike at t he four - h o ur mark . H ea v y w ei gh t Su per Stoc k class lead er D&D Racing was fifth. Wh en t he A r cligh t Suz uki was brou gh t in for rep airs, the expe rience d crew went to wo rk on the b ike like a trained surgical team , repl acing firs t the batter y and the n th e black box. Th ere was no cha nge in the motor cycle's cond ition . Nex t to b e rem o ved a n d replaced was th e tach om et er, but th is had no effect, either. Next they replaced a simple bar-m ounted on /o ff sw itc h tha t can be pu rchased .from any Suz uki dea ler , and the ultra-exotic GSX-R750 Superbike sprang to life wi th no further problems. The Arclight Suzuki returned to the track 18 minutes into the fourth ' h our and 13 laps d own to th e race lead er, SBR, in eigh th. Batey, Acree and Hughes did their best to regain as many positi ons as they could during the final hour and a half, riding at a blistering p a ce a nd carvin g th eir way throu gh traffic. Tea m Dr ead ed had a scoring problem during the third hour and was not cred ited with any laps, whi ch dropped th em far down the running order. WERA officials were able to sort out the timing sheets and reinstate them to their rightful position in second place, in both the o vera lI a nd in the Pire lli Hea vyweight Superbike class. As the six-hou r even t came to a close, SBR had put their fifth wi n of the season in the books, six laps a head o f Tea m Drea ded rid ers Matt Win na ck er a nd Dave Probs t. Tapeworks Racing put in a s telIa r ride to collect th e final rostrum position on a sma lle r Med iumw eigh t Superbike entry, a full tw o laps ahead of AOD, which moved up to fourth durin g the fina l hour of racin g. Ar clight Suz uki clawed their way back into the top five an d regai n ed tw o laps in the process, leaving them only 10 laps behi nd at the chec kered flag. One week prior to the Putnam Park Road Co u rse race weeken d, Junge set the track reco rd at the all-new Carolina Motorsports Park facility on the way to his third conse cutive Open Super Stock win. With this fourth successiv e win and his fifth of the yea r, Jung e pull s eve n in th e championship points s ta nd ings w it h tw o rou nds to go . In the Open Super Stock race, Paul Ducato grabbed th e holesh o t. Jun ge wasted no time ge tting pa st Du cato in th e midd le of the fir st turn , foll owed clo se ly by Arclight Su zuki teammates Joe Prussiano and Lee Acree. Junge stead ily pulled away from the Arclight du o, who in tu rn distanced themselves from a six-way scrap for fourth. O n the thir d lap of the six-la p race, Junge turned in a blistering 1:11.02 laptime to sha tter the track record for the seco nd race in a row . O n the same lap , Acree u sed the draft to 'pu ll even with Prussia no on the fron t straight a nd the two went side by side through tum one, on ly to have Acree slip thro ug h in turn two. Ray Yoder sepa ra ted himself from the large pack now s truggling for fifth place and slowly reeled in the Arclig h t Suzukis. O n the last lap, Prussiano was setting Acree up for a slingsho t pass in to the first turn w hen Acree su d denly moved asi de to let him by. Startle d, Prussiano bobbled , allow in g Yoder to ca tch up. Ju nge cru ised hom e to an easy victory, and Prussiano and Acree recovered to ge t th e last tw o podi u m pos it ions . Yoder ea rned a close fourth, a nd fifth we nt to Tim Bemisderfer. As wi t h t he O pen-class race, t he Michelin 750cc Super Stock class broke. in to several large packs, all d icin g for posit ion until the very en d. Ac ree was on a roll at the beginnin g of th e yea r, winni ng three 750cc Su per Stock races in a row before a cras h durin g practice at round four put him on the sid elines for two eve nts. Since his return, he has ga rnered a th ird and a win , pu tt ing h im right ba ck in co n te n tio n for the tit le against Prussiano. Acree sna gged th e h oles hot, sha d ow ed closel y by Prussiano. John Jacobi made a bad sta rt from his fifth-row starting pos ition bu t was on the move, pass ing handfuls of bikes at a time until he reached Chris "Opie" Ca y lor on his 1888-FAST-LAP Suzuki. Jacobi had a good battle with Caylor before getting by and leaving him to fight Brian Gibson. On the last lap , Prussian o made a run at Acree, w ho had opened a slim halfsecond lead. Charging into the final set of turns, Prussiano we nt for a n insid e braking maneu ver , only to co me up a little short on the run to the chec kered flag. Jacobi closed on the lead ers but ran ' ou t of laps, while Caylo r a nd Gibson wen t side by side to the finis h line, wi th Cay lor get ting the spot. Th e PireIIi 600cc Su p er St ock race was a tactical bat tle between Acree and Ju nge. Ju nge led in to tu rn one for th e fi rs t ti me, jus t a head of Suzuki 600mounted Ac ree a nd Prussiano. Aga in, Yoder was ma kin g quick work of th e fie ld fro m a back-of- th e-gri d starti ng position a nd had worked his way int o third , ahea d of Prussiano, by turn eight. W it h hi s eyes o n Junge an d Ac ree , Yode r spun ou t the rea r of his R-6 and crashed in a violen t high-side dir ectly in fron t of Prussiano.
