AMX Grand Canyon Awards Banquet Presents the 8th Annual SANCTIONED Husqvarna AMX crowns Grand Canyon champs By RACE JOHNNY WHITEBOOTS PHOENIX, AZ, DEC. 12 Every racer who competed in the AMX Grand Canyon State Championship Series was invited to the beautiful Windmill Inn, and since this was the final banquet of the year, it was also time to crown the Arizona State Champions. The GCSC series format was simple: Place in the top three in total points in your class, and claim your series trophy and a monster prize bag stuffed with cool products and services from all of AMX's proud sponsors. (It took a crew of six people over four hours to assemble the more than 50 bags from the huge gathering of booty.) The group of more than 50 sponsors is too large to list here, but many of the sponsors - including Factory Connection, IMS, Tucson Motorsports, Nology, and White Brothers - went the extra distance and provided prizes to every winner. After dinner, emcee Coleman Manchester got things under way. First up was 50cc Beginner Chad Williford, who came forward to claim his goods. It's always fun watching a 6-year-old try to handle a trophy as big as he is as well as a 20-pound prize bag. Several racers won more than one class, and this provided some unique opportunities. Jeff Parr was the first winner to get his second shot at the microphone. On his first trip, he thanked his sponsors Screwie Lewie's. Answer and Dunlop. On his second trip to the podium, he thanked the Lord Jesus Christ for watching over everyone and keeping them safe. Not to be outdone, "Dyno" Don Krieske had everyone in attendance on the edge of their seat on his second trip to the microphone. He asked his girlfriend to stand up. "I'd like to take this special occasion to ask a very special question, in front of God and everybody, to my girlfriend," Krieske said. "I know I haven't been home a lot of weekends, leaving you lonely in an empty house, to pursue my goal. I know you've been through a lot with me, and I have just one question: Will - you - go to Glen Helen with me next weekend?" The crowd erupted into cheers and laughter. Following the Grand Canyon Series presentation was the Arizona State Champions presentation. The AMX pulled out all the stops to get these racers the best prizes possible. Every champ received a beautiful 5-foot series trophy, and AMX presented a new tire to everyone. Kryptonite, the guys who make the best locks in the business, gave everyone locks for their bikes. The three promoters who founded AMX gave the champs a pass that allows them free practice at every track all year long. Then promoter Dan Matthews took time to explain the new format for the Arizona State Championship Series. It will change to a 12race series, run in conjunction with the three major series already scheduled for 2000. He also explained how AMX is working on obtaining more "crossover" sponsors, as well as more motocross~industry sponsors, to sweeten the awards for next year. eN Final Results AMX GflInd Canyon State Championship Series ChlImplons 50 50 50 60 60 80 80 80 Beaver.
