class overall with a mota-two win, forging his way through the field to overtake the two riders who were running out front and seemed to have a lock on the first and second positions. Will Brown and Erik Rhine. Wuori passed the lead duo late in the fmal moto to gamer the overall win with his 2-1 tally. These same ramps had to withstand the impact of high-flying landings by motorcycles and riders. The Starbird crew not only designed the ramps but also fabricated them from raw materials. Rijous worked diligently for three weeks straight, reinstalling the last few pieces of plywood the day before the scheduled arena- Forster Pavilion Graves digs in at Salem Arenacross cross. The ramps had been tested at his motocross facility only a few days prior to the show. Oertle and Starbird met Rijous at the Myriad and watched the track take shape as first loads of dirt were brought in, and then the synthetic ramps were installed. In the first round of practice, riders started challenging each other to see who would try out the new setup. Chad Cook was first; he went straight up and landed well past the "down" ramp. The few hundred peopie on hand waiting for the event got a great "preshow." After a few other futile attempts, the amateurs decided to have the big ramps By Cuo,v UGHT SALEM, OR, JAN. 2 Former AMA National star Tony Graves dug in his heels and rang in the new year with a pair of Pro-class wins during the first Arenacross race of the year in the Forster Pavilion at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. Graves' great day was finalized with his 250cc Pro and Vet Proclass victories aboard his Suzuki. Riding for Herb's Cycletown of Cottage Grove, Oregon, Graves got a bit of a break when the rider who was perhaps the winningest Arenacross rider of the 1990s, Ryan Leach, fell while leading the first 250cc Pro contest. This allowed Graves, who had picked off Honda-mounted Mike Storm moments earlier for second, to nab the lead position - one he maintained to the finish, ahead of Storm and the top Intermediate riders, Ryan Metzler and Tracy Johnson, both of whom finished ahead of Leach, who came from a lap down to finish fifth. In mota two, Graves grabbed the lead over fellow Pros Leach and Storm. Graves met all of Leach's challenges, denying Leach - who, until this race, had a lengthy win streak going - an overall win. Graves' 2-1 tally netted him his second overall win (Graves had earlier topped both Over 30 Pro motos, ahead of Honda rider Rodney Tryon), ahead of Leach ( I -2), while Storm was again the top 125cc Pro rider. Metzler took the iaurels as the top Intermediate rider, picking up the 125cc win ahead of Johnson and fellow Yamaha rider Sean Connaghan. KTM rider Eric Rogers netted the overall win in the 250cc Intermediate class, ahead of Jon Kauffman. Honda-mounted Ryan Huege and Suzuki rider Adam Metzler have gone head to head all season in the Supermini class. but on this day. Huege picked up the overall win. Metzler led Huege to the finish in the first moto, but Huege landed holeshot honors in the second contest and earned a wire-to-wire win over Metzler, who fell on the last lap. Huege (2-1), Metzler (1-2), Ross Johnson (3-3), Alex Hilt (5-4) and Drew Davis (4-5) filled out the top five slots in the 15-rider fieid. Yamaha rider Joe Wyatt finished second to YZ400 pilot Ken Romero in the first 250cc Beginner contest, but when the gate dropped for mota two, Romero was at the tail end of the field and spent the entire moto carving through traffic. All the while. Wyatt held a commanding lead, and he used it to net an overall win (2-1), ahead of Curtis Waibel (32). Romero motored to fifth to net third overall (1-5), ahead of Brent Pahls (4-3) and Travis Lenaburg (7-4). Ricky Wuori logged the aocc Beginner- removed. and that they would use the landing ramp for their takeoffs. Having fashioned a synthetic hop-up into a landing buffer, dirt was placed over the man-made obstacle. The only problem occurred during the final event of the 125cc class on Saturday evening, when starter Justin Elswick stopped the race due to the unsafe track conditions that had developed on the "down" ramp, and time constraints prevented the race from being restarted. As it was unknown how long it would take to make repairs, track referee Gertie made the decision to call the race. Jack Rhodes, the voice of motorcycle racing in the mid-South, announced the shows. Rhodes reminded the fans that they were witnessing history being made, as the board tracks of the past were being ridden by the newest equipment available. "It is the past, present and future coming together in the Myriad Arena in downtown Oklahoma City," Rhodes said as a four-stroke Yamaha's thunder filled the building. The Amateurs gave an outstanding show, performing a fan-pleasing freestyle competition. Cook, Brad Rogers, Wayne Massey and c.J. Tucker performed tricks in the limited space that amazed the near-capacity crowd. Result Friday 50 P/W OPEN: I. Brendi Schmidt (Cob): 2. Jesse Brendan (Cob); 3. Kyle Frosch (Cob): 4. Orr Orr Daniels Ridge Supercross Allison. wonder lad By CINDY KENDRICK TAYLORSVILLE, NC, JAN. 2 At round eight of the Fali/Winter Series at Daniels Ridge Supercross, the Senior Mini contest got off to a great start when Suzuki jockey Jeremy Aliison got the holeshot, with Clyde Roberts and Chris Hayes tucking in behind him. Jamie Windsor tried but failed to pass Hayes in the whoop section. Hayes finally slipped up and made a mistake, and Windsor rode by for third. The first moto finished with Allison in first, Roberts in second and Windsor in third. Roberts got the second-moto holeshot. and Allison came out second. Windsor was third. Allison went around Roberts in the turn before the camelback jump and held the lead to the checkers, which gave him the overall win. Roberts was second, and Windsor took third. In the 125cc C contest, Jeremy Saunders pulled the holeshot on his Suzuki, with Willy Baker getting pushed to the outside and faliing in behind. Jeremy Wylie was in third. Wylie put a move on Baker on the camelback jump and made the pass stick_ Saunders was on the gas, trying to keep the lead, but Wylie was right behind him, hoping to make a move. Baker was right behind Wylie. Saunders came up on traffic and had to slow down to get around them, which gave Wylie and Baker a chance to close the gap between themselves and the leader. Meanwhile, a good distance back, Scottie Driver, Todd Nixon and Matt Taylor were trying to catch up, but they ran out of time. Saunders took the win, with Wylie and Baker in tow. Baker took the second-moto holeshot, with Driver following him and Saunders in third. Baker showed he was determined to hold on to the lead, but Driver was all over him, pushing hjm all the way. Saunders moved in beside Driver and took second from him. and then sets his sights on Baker. They all ran in single file, with no room for anyone to make a mistake. Saunders let Baker know he was back there, but Baker refused to let the pressure get to him. As he came up on traffic, he was able to hold his position. Baker took the checkers first, followed by Saunders in second and Driver in third. The overall standings were a bit different: Saunders took the win. with Baker second and Wylie third. In the Open Pro class, Jim Chester pulled the holeshot in his first moto of the night, followed by Jason McDonald and Daniel Krick. McDonald stayed close to Chester, waiting for his moment to make a pass. The race ended the same way it started. In moto two, McDonald pulled the holeshot. leaving Chester in the second spot and Krick in third. Chester took McDonald in the first straightaway. McDonald showed his determination to get his position back, but Chester was more determined to keep it. The race ended with Chester taking the overall, McDonald second and Krick third. Results 50: 1.
