Firebird Raceway Jewett crowned at Firebird finale By MICHAEL Starwest Cycle Park: David Valdez (247) took the 125cc Novice-class victory .with a 1-2 punch in Moreno Valley, California. 250 NOV; I. Valdez found himself behind youngster Jeff Loop for most of the first 125cc Novice moto. "Jeff was riding good, but I knew I could get by," said Valdez. Near the close of the moto, Loop made a small mistake, which opened the door for Valdez, who took over the lead and went on for the moto win. In the second moto, Timothy Berger led , much of the race on his Smith/IMS-backed Yamaha. but Berger buckled late in the race and handed the lead to Matthew Prochnavy, who went all the way for the second-mota vi~ory. In the end, Valdez took the night's top spot on the podium with a 1-2 tally. which topped Prochnavy's 3-1 and Loop's 2-3. Team Malcolm Smith-backed Donnie Kearney seemed almost bored as he cleaned house in the 65cc (0-8) class. Jake Canada was excited about his new 65cc KX, and he did get two g~eat starts, but he was no match for the "Earthquake," who rumbled away for the overall victory with a pair of aces. Nic Paluzzi returned to action in the 50cc (7-8) class after recovering from an injured hand, and he picked up where he left off - With a win over "new talent" Jake Mendenhall and Quad Chase. Orlando Motocross World Farnell hot at Bithlo By KYLE MYERS BITHLO, FL, DEC. 11 America Suzuki pilot Kyle Farnell won both motos of the Open Money class to collect $500 of the $700 Ford purse at the newly revamped Orlando Motocross World. In the first Open Money moto, Farnell led the nine-rider field into turn one, with Jeff Lampe, Shawn Dunkel and Dustin Morgan following. Two turns into the opening lap, Dunkel rammed Lampe, and Morgan, Scott Gibson and Tim Eggers raced by. Farnell made good use of the clear track in front of him and opened up a healthy lead on his Fox/Oakley/ Performance Engineering-backed RM_ On the move after a midpack start, Jerry Jackson worked by Eggers and then Gibson as the white flag came out. Farnell cruised home for the easy win over Dunkel, Morgan, Jackson and Gibson. Farnell again rocketed out of the gate to start moto two, with Morgan, Dunkel and Eggers in tow. Dunkel made an aggressive move on Morgan, and both riders were sent to the hard-packed soil. This allowed Farnell to pull a huge gap on Gibson, Jackson, Eggers and Steve Nasy. Gibson then bobbled, and Jackson jumped by and into the runner-up position, Meanwhile, Dunkel and Morgan had remounted quickly and were now slicing their way back into the race. Dunkel broke into the top five at the halfway point, with Morgan two bike lengths behind. Gibson was doing all he could to hold on to third. with Eggers, Dunkel and Morgan all over him. Gibson folded under the pressure, and Dunkel, Eggers and Morgan slipped by. Dunkel then closed in on Jackson and looked for a way by. When the while flag came out. Dunkel was just inches behind Jackson, and he made his move on the back straightaway. finishing second, behind Farnell. Jackson, Morgan and Eggers followed. Morgan also competed in the 16-24 class, posting. 1- 1 tally on his Mooge/Performance Engineering YZ, finishing in front of Vince Cirrincione and Matt Knight. Jewett took the points lead at midseason and plotted a careful strategy in which he entered and won enough races to stay ahead of the competition for the remainder of the season. Jewett - who gets help from Arai, Moto Laverda, Michelin, PSR, Shark-Skinz and M4 used a Laverda 650, a Suzuki GSXR600 and a Kawasaki 500 to wrest the title from Mark Ledesma. While Ledesma may not have chosen to campaign for the number-one plate this year, he did underline the fact that he is the quickest man to ever race at Firebird Raceway by breaking the track record for the second time this season. Ledesma used his Kawasaki ZX7R to clock a jaw-dropping 1:06.34 during the Unlimited GP race on Sunday, according to official referee Thomas Dahl. Jared Kapoor continues to be one of the hardest-riding and quickest men in the CCS Southwest Series, and he will mount the number-two plate on the front of his Yamaha YZFR6 next year to prove it. This is the second season in which Kapoor has finished in the top three; last year, he claimed the number-three plate. Kapoor was assisted in his quest this season by TMRP, Michelin, SharkSkinz, Racers Edge, SR Axis, Woodcraft, Yamaha, Asphalt and Gas, Penske, Dyno-Jet and Lockhart Phillips. While hard riding paid off for Kapoor, it was consistency and determination that powered Steven Hymer to the first number plate of his career. Hymer took the third spot in overall points with his Yamaha 400, Kawasaki 500, Honda 600 and Yamaha 600 to race an average of seven or eight races at every event. The Glendale man is part of a racing family, and he gets help from Motorcycle Exchange, Country Boys Restaurant, and the Catfish Mart. Results U/l S/SPT EX: I. Vincent Hllskovec (Suzl; 2. The native of Bainbridge, Georgia, became the first racer to score three victories in the same day. Lusk rode his Honda CRs to wins in the Supermini class, the Youth division and in 125cc Money racing. The event was the last of the 1999 season. With rain on the way, the decision was made to make every class a one·moto, winner-take-all affair. Lusk put his Honda out front In the Youth race, with Trey Barnard and Clay Downing following. Downing was the first of the front-runners to fall victim to the slick conditions, washing out in a high-speed sweeper. Honda riders Jason Cross and Ben Fleetwood also took turns in second place before going down. Lusk had no trouble handling the red mud, and he stretched his lead every lap. At one point, he pulled in for a fresh set of goggles. Steady riding paid off for Chase Livingston and Jeremy Carroll: While neither rider was in the top five during the early going, they took the checkers in second and third, respectively, behind Lusk. Lusk's only challenge of the day came in the 125 Money heat. He went bar to bar with National veteran Ricky Palmer. With 20 years on his younger competitor, Palmer conceded nothing off the starting line. He grabbed the lead on his Yamaha, with Lusk's 2000 CR125 right behind. For five intense laps, Palmer countered Lusk's every move and remained in control of the race. With just two laps to go, Lusk had locked himself onto Palmer's rear wheel. Palmer ricocheted off a fast right-hander and swept wide to keep up momentum and miss the rough inside line. Lusk hit the turn and went up the inside, ignoring the choppy acceleration ruts. In the next turn, Lusk forced his way under Palmer for the lead and the win. With drizzle falling, Jackie Cox and his KX250 surged ahead of Grady Hendrix and Hal Haskins in the Over 40/Hobby moto. Haskins quickly passed for second, and Hen· drix also gave way to Brad Taylor. After a sluggish start, Tony Hardy had his Kawasaki rolling. He moved into fourth, then picked up third when Taylor stalled his Yamaha in a tum. At the halfway point, Cox appeared to be fading, and Haskins had methodically chipped away at his comfortable lead. On the last lap, Haskins was breathing down Cox's neck and looking for a way past. Cox reached down deep and found the energy to hold on for his first win of the year, over a determined Haskins. Taylor lost no more positions and finished fourth, behind Hardy. Results P/W 0: 1. OrllY Vinson (KTM); 2. Daniel Johnson (Pol): 3. Kole Casey (KTM). 60 JR; I. Brandon Croley (Kew). 60 BEO: I.
