Christmas Grand Prix spot. When they reappeared. Sleeter was ahead of Thorton and staring down a long line of lapped riders. As the race continued, the frontrunners began to spread out among the lapped traffic, but at the finish, it was Myers with the win. Schnell finished second after an hour and a half straight of riding. Third place went to Walters. The Intermediate class was dominated by Tupa, who also rode back-to-back motos. KIRK CHANDLER CARLSBAD,CA,DEC.13 he CMXR-promoted Moto World Christmas Grand Prix at Carlsbad Raceway - sponsored by Moto World of EI Cajon, Ceet, Black Flys, RP Racing, Acerbis, Mad Racing, JE Tupa Grading, BLT Grading and Coast Rentals - was a big success, with more than 500 riders showing up to compete on an extremely good track design that included, for the first time ever, a 77-foot-long uphill double jump, a rhythm section, and an uphill step-up over 50 feet long. Only a handful of riders jumped the 77-foot double; one of them was 125cc Pro class winner Greg Schnell. Some 71 125cc riders lined up for the 45-minute moto, preparing for the live-engine, sit-on-your-Ieft-hand start. The lead in the Pro/Expert/ Intermediate class went to Schnell, who pulled a large lead in the infield section. The rest of the first-wave riders were lost in the dust. Schnell was the first to arrive at the big double, and he jumped it; the next three riders - Jake Elkins, Craig Davis and Lee Bacon - rolled it. Tupa, riding fifth, jumped it and passed Bacon for fourth. The pack was now beginning to spread out as the riders disappeared into the back sand section that weaves through the trees and heads toward the Carlsbad motocross track. When the riders appeared on the drag strip, Schnell had a big lead, Elkins was still in second, and Tupa was third. Davis, aboard his KTM 125, passed the Honda-mounted Tupa on the frontage road that leads to the start/finish. The first lap took Schnell a little under nine minutes to complete. Schnell looked comfortable out front and once again flew over the big uphill double. Elkins, still running in second, and Davis both jumped the 28 JANUARY 19. 2000' eye double on the second lap. Davis was now hounding Elkins, a 125cc Intermediate racer. Davis passed the Yamaha rider in the back section and soon he was chasing after Schnell, who had already caught some of the backmarkers. Schnell took the checkers way ahead of Davis. Right after finishing the 125cc moto, Schnell and 125cc Intermediate runner-up Josh Tupa jumped on their 250s for another 45 minutes of fun. This time around, Schnell had more competition, including such notable riders as Terry Fowler, Mike Sleeter, Spud Walters and Scott Myers. When the 52-rider 250cc field took off from the starting grid, Myers was in control of the Pro class. Following Myers at the conclusion of the first lap were Schnell, Walters and Sean Thorton. As the Pro class careened through the fifth-gear, wide-open infield section, Tupa - the leader in the Intermediate class - came through the start/finish well ahead of the second-placed rider, Jim Salazar. Behind Salazar, there was a battle for third between David Taylor and Kirk Chandler. Soon after, the rest of the pack flooded through the staft/finish, completing their first lap. When the Pros came around for the second lap, they were still in the same order. but Sleeter was now challenging Thorton for the fourth • EO n _ vv s this race switch off each lap, resulting in an interesting mix of speed and fun. This year's team race was divided into two groups, the Novice and Expert divisions. The Expert division was a little small in size due to speculation that the team race would be canceled due to time constraints, but the race went on. In the Novice class, the holeshot went to Moto Pro's Steve Isenhower, who was way out in front of the next team when he passed off to his partner, Jeremy Girior. The rest of the pack slammed into the switch point. One team was comprised of a single rider who was unable to find a partner, and he switched his wristband from one hand to the other at each of the three handoffs. When the dust settled, David Taylor and Cody Randall had won the Expert division, and Isenhower CN and Girior won the Novice class. The biggest race of the day was the Vet Over 40, Vet Over 50, and the special Honda Employee Race. The start included 125cc riders starting on four separate grids. The Vet Over 40 Masters and Expert grid had a host of contenders, including No Fear's Jeff Surwall and Marty Moates, Pete Murray, Rob Wilshire, and Tek Steel's Tom Knapp. The field rocketed off the start, . and when the pack finally settled down, Murray, aboard his S.uzuki, was in front of Moates. Running third and fourth were Surwall and Knapp. A couple of seconds back was Paul Vogelsang, who was holding off Wilshire's charges. Wilshire displaced Vogelsang and quickly set his sights on Knapp. Wilshire was on a mission to catch the Masters-class leaders, Murray and Moates. When the pack concluded the second lap, the order was still Murray, Moates, Surwall and Wilshire. The pace was furious, and by the end of the next lap, Moates was leading, Murray was second, and Wilshire had passed Surwall for third. On the next lap, Moates had a very comfortable lead over Wilshire. Murray had settled into third, and Surwall was still in fourth. On the final lap, Moates crossed the line first, followed by a stream of lapped riders and then Murray, and finally Wilshire, in third. The winner of the Vet Over 40 Expert division was Knapp. The CMXR Christmas GP also included the Team Race. The participants in 125 BEG: I. Chris Corum: 2. Cory Gustafson; 3. Derek Garland; 4.
