CMC SunStar Sprockets Golden State Nationals North, Round 1 event, and also topped all the racers in the Supermini division, posting one of the few double class victories of the weekend. Rising Pee Wee star Ty Keenom was head and shoulders above the 50cc (4-6) group. He spent much of his time in a battle with 50cc (7-8) class winner Howell. "Because of my foot problem, my doctor is not too excited about me racing supercross." Holland returned in the 125cc Pro contest and took that victory as well, though he found himself having to work for it in the final moto. "I think I made him feel the pressure," said Pestana. "We both get our bikes from Clawson Motorsports, so we're kind of like teammates." In the end, Holland went on for the victory, in front of Scott Davis (4-3), Smail (3-5), Daniel Blair (2-6) and 28-year-old Ray Crumb. "It's great to be back racing again," said Crumb. "I started my own skate shop three years ago, called 'Generation Next,' and three days ago I get a call from Bill Wright Toyota and Bakersfield Yamaha, saying, 'You're hooked up to go racing in 2000.' He scored a sixmoto sweep of the 125cc, 250cc and Over 25 Pro classes during round one of the CMC SunStar Sprockets Golden State Nationals North. Holland was one of nearly 500 racers in attendance. "The crews of Motowest Racing worked late into the evening getting the track dialed," said CMC North promoter Matt Lorenzo. Holland nailed the holeshot in the first 250cc Pro moto aboard his new Suzuki 250. "Demarini is the team I am riding for next year," Holland said. "Last year we raced Hondas, but this year we have Suzuki support." Holland quickly pulled away from Scott Davis, but Davis bailed off early and handed second to Jeff Pestana, while Holland pulled out to a comfortable lead. "When the track is fast and smooth like this," Holland said, "you have to get a good start and ride smooth, because everyone can go about the same speed." Holland went on for the moto win, 24 JANUARY 19, 2000· cue I • n e _ s Steve Mertens was a runaway winner in the first 125cc Intermediate moto, despite starting outside the top five. The second moto could have been a repeat of the first, but Mertens ran into trouble just after the start. "My bike bogged and wouldn't run," Mertens reported. "I think my dad put the wrong jet in or something." Ty Lacy went on for the secondmoto victory and the overall win via his 3-1 showing, which topped David Booth's 2-4 and Turbo Reifs 5-2. Mertens did not leave empty-handed, though; he came away with the Schoolboy victory later in the program, posting a perfect 1-1 moto score. Dustin Pipes was unbeatable in the 60cc (0-8) class with a pair of runaway victories, topping Zachary Dubois, Preston Mull, Ruben Hernandez and Austin Howell. "I have been riding with former ) 25cc National Champion George Holland III," Pipes said. "He is really teaching me how to ride a lot faster."
