Upcoming Rounds: Round 2 - Anaheim, California, January 15 Round 3 - San Diego, California, January 22 Yamaha of Troy's Casey Johnson struggled through the 125cc qualifiers but finished second in the main to Pingree. BRIEFLY••• Team Suzuki's Robbie Reynard made the tough decision to sit out the PACE-promoted AMAlEA Sports Supercross Series opener. Reynard is still bothered by a sore shoulder that he injured at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas in October. When Reynard will return to action will be determined week to week. Faces in the crowd: Great Britain's James Dobb was hanging around the KTM pits at Anaheim. Back in the early '90s. Dobb spent a few seasons in the U.S. on the Supercross and outdoor National circuits. but has since concentrated his efforts in Europe. For 2000, Dobb has signed a deal with KTM that will have him competing in the FIM World Championship 125cc MX Series. Dobb is currently spending time in California. testing with KTM and taking advantage of the warmer climate. Dobb said he had no desire to race at Anaheim. Faces in the crowd II: Dobb wasn't the only GP honcho on hand in Anaheim. Former World Champion Trampas Parker. who will race the 125cc GPs for TM in 2000. was also in the pits. Also present was 250cc World Champion Frederic Bolley. on a 10day visit to the States to train with French countryman Sebastien Tortelli. By the way. it appears that Bolley's previous plans to race the Florida GNCC opener have been thwarted by a scheduling conflict with a French National race. American GP expatriates Mike Brown and Ryan Hughes were also spotted watching at Anaheim. Other celebrities spotted in the crowd included road racing World Champions Kenny Roberts and Kevin Schwantz. race car driver Robbie Gordon, and radio (Loveline) and TV talk show host Adam Carolla. New Zealand's Shayne King (below) made his Supercross debut at Anaheim. The former 500cc World Champion looked a bit tentative on the difficult Anaheim track but did have all the doubles and triples down by the time the night was through. King, who was aboard a factory-supported KTM 520 four-stroke. missed a transfer position by one spot in the second semi and would later crash out of contention in the LCQ. Needless to say, King did not make the main. but he did give it a good try. Scott Goggle rep Bevo Forti was wearing a frightful-looking contraption on his arm, the result of a domestic accident involving some Christmas lights and a ladder. The likable Forti suffered a compound fracture and a fractured elbow. and adamantly denied rumors that the injury was incurred in a freestyle crash. There were plenty of riders sporting new colors for 2000. but they weren't alone as several mechanics have changed teams - including Brian Barry (rightJ. Barry had been a longtime tuner at Team Yamaha but is now wearing factory Suzuki yellow, turning wrenches for Suzuki's newest 250cc team rider Damon Huffman. Barry took care of John Dowd's bikes at Yamaha, but when Dowd went to Kawasaki, Barry was left without a rider. Barry says he is very happy in his new environment at Suzuki. Meanwhile. Dowd's new tuner at Kawasaki is Jeremy Albrecht - Jeff Emig's former wrench. The May 6 Supercross season finale in Las Vegas will be televised live on a pay-per-view basis. Contact your local cable company for details. KTM is making a nice gesture to Donovan Mitchell. who signed a deal with the team in the off-season but then suffered spinal-column injuries in a crash at LACR's Day in the Dirt. KTM is bringing Mitchell's number-861 bike to all the races. and handing out his ftyers in the pits. "We still consider him to be a part of the team, ~ said technician Tom Moen, who reports that Mitchell has gained some movement in the fingers of his right hand (Mitchell has a broken wrist on the other arm). Moen also says that Mitchell can use his right arm to hold himself in a seated position. The reports of his departure have been greatly exaggerated: Last week we reported that Honda rider coach JeH Stanton had retired, so we were under· standably surprised to see him sporting a Honda team shirt in the Anaheim pits. It seems Stanton was able to work out a deal that will see him attend the first two rounds of the season. and then every other round after that. thereby allowing him to spend more time at home and with his family. An injured Jeff Emig. while gazing out over the 45,050-strong sold-out crowd and looking up at the Goodyear blimp hovering overhead, said: "This is pretty big-time, huh? We're for real." One of the more exciting races of the night took place in the KTM Jr. Supercross Challenge halftime race. There were a couple of anxious moments. one of which was when race leader Dylan Pemberton high-centered his 65cc KTM on one of the steep Anaheim jumps. Second-place Austin Howell closed in. but Pemberton managed to rock his bike free before Howell could pass him. Howell again made a run at Pemberton in the last turn but ended up going down. Pemberton scored the win over Howell, followed by Bryan Briley, Forest Kessinger and Robert Noftz. The rest of the 13-rider field was filled out by Brett Downey, Bryan Briley, Justin Jeffers. Nicholas Wood, Tyler Enticknap, Parker Smith, Matthew Popp and Mickey Carr. Ricky Carmichael might have faded a Iittie bit in the 250cc main. but at least the 20-year-old rider didn't crash. -I feel a lot more confident this year, - Carmichael said at the end of the evening. "I was a lot more in control. Last year I was on the ground most of the time." The opening ceremonies featured an impressive laser/pyrotechnics show and loud music. while the riders were introduced through a cool James Bond-style sliding door behind the podium. Kawasaki's John Dowd. (right) who was involved in an incident with Greg Albertyn and Ezra Lusk during an afternoon practice session. suffered a nasty" raspberry" on his back. courtesy of Lusk's front tire. Lusk suffered a dislocated shoulder in the crash (see sidebar). Honda's Sebastien Tortelli also had a spectacular crash during practice, but quickly got up and bowed to the crowd. Team Kawasaki's Ricky Carmichael grabbed the Yahoo!sports.com Holeshot Award and the $1000 that comes with it for beating everybody through the first turn in the 250cc main. In the 125cc class, Danny Smith took the $500 that was up for grabs after nailing the holeshot in the main event. After hnishing second, Mike LaRocco said he really won't be content until he gets a couple of wins under his belt. "Yeah, I can be consistent and have a good shot lat the titlel, but I want to win some races." This is what Jeremy McGrath had to say about a possible seventh Supercross title: "I might not be the fastest every week, but I'll be there every time." cue I eo n e vv so JANUARY 19, 2000 11
