Jackson seemed to be a little off the pace, and he eventually slipped back to finish sixth. Gibson rode a flawless race out front, with Yezek staying consistently about two seconds behind. It looked as though that would be the finish order until lap 14, when Gibson got a little impatient and tried to get around lapped rider Mark Musselman. The two collided throug h the rhythm section and both shot into the whoop section, while Yezek went on to claim an easy victory. Gibson went from a seeming win to a DNF. Wheeler took advantage of the mishap and placed second, followed by Yamaha rider Charlie Dunaway. Neese and Burkhart battled to the finish, claiming fourth and fifth, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 were Jackson, Shue, Raubs, Oelhof, and Arkport Cycles Suzuki rider Aaron Dieter. G_. 38+ PRO: 1. Stt:vt: Plottonl: 2. Rick Johnson; 3. Tim Tynen; 4. Allin Dd.orgt:; 5. By CLAY LIGHT MADRAS, OR, DEC. 12 Veteran Professional rider Nev Laborde leveled the competition in two classes at round two of the Central Oregon Winter Motocross Series, held at the Willow Creek Moto.cross Park, posting wins in the 250cc Pro and Vet Expert classes. Laborde had brutally tough competition in both victories, particularly from SHverton, Oregon's Gary Terlecki in the 250cc Pro class. In moto one, Laborde couldn't maintain Terlecki's pace, and he trailed the Suzuki rider to the finish by a large margin. Laborde led moto two from the get-go; Terlecki was buried midpack, but he carved through traffic to close in on Laborde with three laps remaining. This set up the day's best battle, as the two went head to head for the remainder of the moto. Terlecki attempted a last-lap pass of the Sweeney's Kawasakisponsored Laborde, but his attempt went awry: The two tangled and Terlecki fell, which helped Laborde gain the victory - his first of the series - with a 2-1 tally. However, Terlecki's day wasn't a total wash, as the Pro Caliber/Tom Morgan Racing-backed rider later dominated both of the Before The Hill motos. Laborde's double win tally was completed after the Bend, Oregon, rider won the combined Vet/Over 40 Expert class, this time with a dominating I-I sweep. Laborde was kept honest in both outings by Yamaha rider Dave Cheney, who trailed Laborde to the finish inboth motos to win the Over 40 poetion with 11 placings. Second to Cheney in the Over 40 class was Washington's Arne HeUman, who came out of an eight-year retirement to net second overall via 3-2 placings to lead Ron Hudson (2-3), Rod Kentner (4-4) and Patrick Brown (6-5). Honda-mounted Ryan Huege kept up his streak of churning out two class wins in his three-class quest, breezing to 1-1 wins in the aocc Junior and Supermini classes, as well as riding to fourth place in the 125cc Junior class, aboard his Cycle Country Honda-sponsored CRs. Willie Broms made Huege work for all four victories, placing second to Huege in two classes. KTM America-supported Sean Bergland, who earlier won the aocc Novice class, finished third to the Honda duo in the Supermini class. The day's largest class was the 125cc Novice class, which was topped by Hondamounted T.J. Moschetti, who also won the series' opener. Moschetti aBsconded with the holeshot in both motos to seal his victory over Kawasaki rider Sean Ught, who gated poorly in both motos, but Light ca",ed through traffic to net a 2-2 tally, ahead of Jason Beebe (4-3), Daniel Harris (3-6)~nd Bryan Syslo (5-5). After narrowly missing 6ut on the overall 125cc Novice-dass win, Light stormed back to win the 250cc Novice class overall, comjng through the field of riders in both motos to finish the day with a 1-2 tally; he caught Josh Johnson on the final rap but was unable to make a pass. After 29 local races, four Nationals, and one extravaganza at Mammoth, the 1999 Over The HHI Gang season was down to its last race at LACR. Up for grabs on the day was the coveted number-one plate that had been contested by 600 racers; in the end, It was Expert Gary Scheidler who will sport the number-one plate on his bike next year. In moto one, a 20-minute, six-rider dogfight developed. Dirt Riders' Ed Tripp rocketed his CR to the front, absconding with the holeshol. Giving chase were Piattonj, Mike AltenhofeJ, Dennis Foster and Tim Tynan. TFipp was able to put a little space between himself and Piat· toni, but there was a six-way battle for third as the riders jousted for position. . "That is what racing is all about," enthused CR rider Rick Johnson. "Man, was it tight out therel You dream about races like that. It was insane. Guys were going everywhere and we were so close, I was just waiting for things to settle down a bit befor~ I made my move." Johnson was abl~ to work his way from eighth up to fifth. Foster was in control of third, but in every tum he ~ouid see the front wheels of YZ-mounted Rod Robertson and Tynan, who took the inside line away from Robertson to secure-fourth and then set his e RUVV'S Los Angeles County Raceway: Steve Platton! Tripp took the moto win, with Piattoni and Tynan in tow. At the drop of the gate in moto two, Johnson grabbed the holeshot down the fourth-gear straight, with Pialtoni, Tripp and Robertson in tow. Piattoni passed Johnson to take the lead and then quickly began to distance himself from Johnson. Tripp was trying to work his way around Johnson when he found himself taking a soil sample, rejoining the race in dead last and very shaken. With the overall victory up for grabs, Piattoni grabbed a fistful of throttle on his Rick Peterson Motorsports-tuned RM and checked out. With Tripp out, Johnson secured the second spot and was running uncontested. The battle on track was for third, between Ed Guajardo and Alan Delarge. With the laps winding down, the duo were going at it tooth and nail for the final podium position. At the checkered flag, it was Guajardo hanging on by the margin of a worn knobby. Pialtoni's 2-1 tally enabled him to take home the lion's share of the Pro purse and the overall victory. Johnson mixed good riding with a little luck, going 5-2 for second overall on the day. Tynan took the final piece of plastic with a 3-5 on the day. Results BEG: I. Robtlrt McDllltit:l; 2. Danny McVay: 3. Bryan Ht:imstlld; 4. Dem:l Turner: 5. Mike McLaughlin. 38+ BEG: I. Rennie finally got past Hermann for the lead in the big sweeper before the finish-line jump at the start of the last lap. Hermann hung right on his rear fender, and the two of them finished almo$t in tan· demo Hemsley was a solid third, ahead of Intermediates Glenn Weidman and Chuck Jensen. Hemsley dropped the hammer on moto two, leading Rennie and Hermann around the first tum. The top three turned up the wick and scorched the track for a couple of laps until Hemsley went down, dropping out of contention. Rennie' and Hermann continued dicing, racing bar to bar way out in front of the rest of the pack. Rennie once again held off the ferocious charge of Hermann to capture his second straight contest. Hermann was ohso-close in second, with Suzuki's Weidman just edging Honda pilot Jeff Murphy and Kawasaki jockey Jensen for third. Monte Montague once again demonstrated why he has a National number, as he showed the 125cc class the fast way around the track. He jumped out in front of race one. with Mark Hermann and Tony Westbay just behind. Montague and Hermann quickly lit out for the horizon, as Joseph Page and Tim Weig muscled into third and fourth. Montague motored on to win race one, topping Hermann, Page and Weig in the results. A determined Mark Hermann blasted out in front of race two, just in front of Montague and Westbay. Hermann and Montague got into a wild ride for the top spot, until Montague made a hard pass in the back hairpin turn and opened up just a little bit of daylight. Montague went on to win his second straight race, just ahead of Mark Hermann. Page finished up in third, leading Westbay, Weig and Jimi Harris through the checkers.
