Both Hanson and Miller·Jones beat Con· naghan to the first turn in moto two, but two turns later, Connaghan had the lead. Connaghan led from that point until the wave of Troy Neiman's checkered flag for a ]., sweep and the overall Intermediate win, followed by Miller·Jones, the second Intermediate, and Hanson. Miller earned a sweep of the Junior class (1-1), ahead of Cody Buyas (2-3), Mike Stenzel (4-2), Californian Brad Palmer (3-4) and Lucas Buyas (5·5). Connaghan polished off his double win tally by dominating both of the Before The Hill motos, although in the early stages of both motos he was pressed hard by Suzuki· mount· ed Tye Crandall, Hanson and Miller-Jones. However, Connaghan moved into untouchable leads in the later stages to earn a perfect four· for-four sweep, ahead of Hanson (2-3), MillerJones (4-2), Crandall (3-4) and Kawasakimounted Jeff Rands (5-5). Pro Caliber Suzuki-supported J.R. Vielle rode a pace similar to Connaghan's in his 'double-moto rampage of the 250cc Intermediate/Junior class. Vielle jumped out front at the starts of both motos, checking out on the competition, with only Crandall, the top Junior rider, within striking distance at any point in either moto. Crandall netted the Junior win with ].] placings, edging the second-placed trophy in the Combined Intermediate and 250cc Open Amateur races, while Cantrell claimed the number-one spot in the 125cc Open Amateur event. Cantrell held the upper edge in the first Combined Intermediate moto. as he jumped his Yamaha out front and enjoyed the best view of the track, while the rest of the gate spent the moto looking at Cantrell's backside. Doughty recovering from a fourth~place start, plowed through the pack, finishing second behind Cantrell, I In moto two, Cantrell once again got the lead jump, but this time Doughty was breath~ ing down his back as they rounded the holeshot corner. Cantrell used every trick in his bag to keep the lead through the first three laps. On lap four, Doughty used a few of his own tricks to move to the front and hold on to the finish line, his 2-1 finish beating Cantrell's 1-2 moto tally. Kevin Lomax brought home third overall with consistent 3·3 motos, followed by Bobby Hogan in fourth. Doughty's brother Nathan also showed he has the right stuff, as he ran unchallenged in the Schoolboy event, winning both motes. An action-packed three-way battle for second place was waged between James Willingham, L.c. Horn and Terry Struhall. In moto one, Willingham was at the controls, while Struhall and Horn chewed on his rear fender. Willing. ham tried to reel Doughty in but rode solid in second and was followed across the finish line by Struhall and Horn. In moto two, the younger Doughty repeated his winning ways. Willingham came out in second, with Struhall and Hom in hot pursuit. Using a handful of throttle, Struhall moved past Willingham and secured his spot in second, leaving Willingham and Hom to battle for third. Doughty won the overall, followed by Struhall, whose 4-2 tally netted second. Third was eamed by Hom, with a 3-3 tally, followed by Willingham's 2-4 finish for the number-four spot. Adam Roybal eamed fifth overall with a 5-5 score. Results 50 (4-6): I. David Bryant (Cob); 2. Tyler Heemsbergen (Cob); 3. Koda Tingle (Lem); 4. JonaUuln Tawney (KTM); 5. Mason Roy (Cob). 50 (7-8); I. Edwards Motocross Mason, Dailey bomb the Air Base By GREG ROBERTSON EDWARDS AFB, CA, DEC. 5 Perched aboard his Honda, Josh Mason shot down the competition with a 1-2 score for the 250cc Intermediate·class win, while Brett Dailey leveled the troops in the Vet Novice class with a perfect ]. I display during the opening round of California Racing Club's annual Tro· phy Series, held at the Desert Wheels-prepped sand track at Edwards Air Force Base. In the first 250cc Intermediate moto, Yamaha-mounted Eddie Laret took the early lead on the wide-open Edwards circuit over Patrick Wade, Warren Tittlemier and Nick Edwards Air Force Base: Nick Wade (20) snatched the holeshot, ahead of Warren Tittlemier (161), Josh Mason (138) and the rest of the field, in the second 250cc Intermediate moto, but Mason captured the overall honors. Mairose. Tittlemier and Mairose connected in a turn and ended up in a pile on the opening lap, moving Travis Smith and Mason up to third and fourth, respectively. Laret's lead was challenged by Mason on lap three, while Titt1emier moved back up into third place. Tittlemier started hounding Mason, and both of them passed Laret with time running out. Mason held off Tittlemier for the win. Laret was third, with Justin Eide putting a last-lap pass on Wade for fourth. [n round two, Tittlemier absconded with the holeshot over Wade and Laret, only to go down at the end of the back straight and have to start all over again from last place. After a lap, Laret was running out front, with Smith getting around Wade for second. Smith ran down Laret and eventually took the lead on lap five. A great battle over third ensued for most of the moto between Eide, Mason, Wade and Tittlemier. In the end, Smith scored the moto win, but it was Mason who emerged from the heated battle on his Nationwide Cycle/Scott/Maxima-backed CR250 with a runner-up finish to capture the overall honors. Tittlemier went 2·3 for second over the 3-4 of Laret and the 4-5 of Eide. Kenard Lipscomb led the first Vet Novice mota for just over a lap before Darren Lowry went around him in a sweeper. Upscomb went down in the sand a short time later and dropped to the back of the pack, as Lowry's lead came under fire from Dailey. By the midway point, Dailey had five seconds on Lowry and was pulling away. Dailey took the win with 15 seconds to spare. Richard Marshall held off Rob Enriquez by a bike length for second. Darrel Mauldin and Vinny Lowry were a close fourth and fifth, respectively, ahead of Darren Lowry, who recovered from a fall for sixth. Vinny Lowry, Enriquez, Mauldin nd Dailey argued over the top spot throughout the second moto, with Dailey finally coming out on top on the last lap to sweep the class. Enriquez went 3-2 for second, followed by Marshall (2-4) and Mauldin (4-3). Results P/W YAM BEG: I. Andrew Detglldo (Yam). P/W BEG: I. Scott Winslow (HM); 2. Zllck Townsend (HM); 3. Light, though, avenged the loss by leading the second ] 25cc moto from start to finish for the overall 125cc Novice win, beating Barton, the first-moto winner, in the overall tally, followed by Travis Moschetti, Jonathan McGillivray and Cole Boggess. KTM rider Rhett Johnson maintained hjs stranglehold on the 60cc class by breezing to ]·1 wins. Con naghan collects two By etA y LIGHT MADRAS, OR, DEC. 5 Herb's Cycletown-backed Sean Connaghan went on his latest rampage during motocross action at Willow Creek Motocross Park in central Oregon. This resulted in the Yamaha rider's decimation of the Before The Hm and 125cc Intermediate classes. Connaghan, Suzuki-mounted Marc Miller· Jones, and Yamaha pilot James Hanson darted out front in the first combined 125cc Pro/lntermediate/Junior-c1ass contest, but Connaghan put lots of ground between himself and the squabble for second place between Miller-Jones and Hanson, netting the first of his four mota victories. Miller-Jones finished ahead of the lone Pro, Hanson, and Junior winner Steve Miller. II: Y II: I e n e vv s JANUARY 12, 2000 41
