Hungry Valley
By Ch ris S a n chirico
GORMAN, CA,JULY25
On " hot sum mer da y, 175 Vet riders decid ed to
have some fun in the sun and dirt a t the Hun gry
Valley MX tr ack, and Philip Kuhn p ut in two
strong mot os to top 14 hu ngry rid ers in the Over
The Hill Gang Novice class. The day was filled
wit h some very tight racing, as moto two ended
in a photo finish. Kuhn , Mike Schulhof, Richard
Renken and Spike Racing' s Robert Byn on mixed
it up in both moto s.
In moto one, RM-moun ted new com er N ick
Dally gra bbed the holeshot , but his lea d wa s
short-lived, as 5chulhof a nd Kuh n pounced into
first and seco nd . Dally wo uld eve ntually finish
. 10th. In the lead, Schulhof was bein g pressured
by Ku h n. Tim Farley was slicing thr ou gh the
pack after a poor start. Bob Morales worked his
YZ into thi rd and waged a heat ed ba ttle wi th
Byn on to secu re the position , and then Far ley
ente red the fray. Mean wh ile, up front, Ku hn's
relen tless pressure paid off as he di ved insid e
5chulhof to take the lead . The ru nnin g orde r was
no w Ku h n, Schu lhofa n d Fa rley, who ha d
p icke d off bo th Morales an d Byn on . Moral es
th re w a ch ain w h ile runnin g in four th a nd
wal ked hi s bike to the fin is h line to avo id a
DNF. On the last la p, the battle for the lead
in tensified , as Sch ulhof d espe ra tely so ugh t a
way arou nd Kuh n, who den ied all attempts and
too k the checkers . Schu lhof locked down second , and Farley was third .
At 'the drop of the gate in mota two, KXmoun ted Kuhn took the lead . Kuhn did his best
to d istanc e himself from the field. Again, there
was a d ogfigh t for se co nd, be tween Ren ke n, .
Eric Gunther, Bynon and 5chulhof. Bynon ma de
a move on Gu n th er th rou g h the whoo ps to
claim third. Kuhn was proceed ing to check out,
with Renken in seco nd a nd Bynon in th ird . The
man on the move was YZ125-mo u nted Schulhof, w ho got ca ug ht n a ppi n g on th e gate.
Renk en began to reel in the distant Kuhn , chopp in g awa y a t his large lead . On the last lap ,
Renken moved up to Kuhn's rear wheel. As the
duo fou gh t fo r t he wi n, t hey en cou nte red
la pped traffic. Renken not only showed Kuhn a
wh ee l in every turn, he st uc k a hand leba r in
there as well. The two screamed down the front
straightaway to the checkered flag, and Renken
took the win by half a knob by. Kuhn 's 1-2 gave
him the ove rall , Renken 's 6-1 was good enough
for seco nd , and Bynon's 4-3 secured the last of
the plastic.
