" Th e 250cc Pro / Am was th e first race of the d ay, and hometow n hero Lam so n, w ho gre w up in nearby Pollock Pines, grabbed the holesh ot ah ead o f Da vis, Cliff Cook, C hris Ve nd le y , Der ek Curri e and Malt Veerkamp . Davi s d id his bes t to keep the lead er in sig ht but was no match for L.lmson, w ho was (natu ra lly) righ t at home on the hard ~ pa cked course and soon bu ilt a for" midable lead. At the finish, it was Lamso n first, followed by Davis, Vend lev, Coo k a nd Cu rri e. Th; second 250cc Pro moto go t under way ' sa ns Lam son , w ith Davis lead ing the ch a rge ah ead of Cook, Vend ley, Currie and Veerkamp. Davis was never hea ded for the duration of the mota. Whi le racing in seco nd , Co o k fe ll and dropped to the back of the pa ck, retirin g from the ra ce s ho r tly therea fter. Vc ndlcy inherited sec o nd and held it. to the checkers, finis hi ng ahead of third-placed Currie. In the 12Sce Pro / Am race , Lamson (racing jus t for practice) again took th e holeshot and quickly ran away from the pa ck, no doubt aided by the fac t he was riding hi, 250 - the only bike he brought - a gainst the smaller machines. Ca lv in Andt ovec Jed Davis fo r the fir st la p before Davis ma de a pass to move int o second. From there, Davis tried to chase down Lamson, but Lamson went on to take anothe r win, followed by Davis, Kenny Be Il, Mik e Anderson and Andlovec. Lamson load ed up a nd d eparted af ter th e first motos. In the second 125cc rnot o, Davis was the dominant rider, altho ugh Cook gave him a bat lie for the lead for the firs t few la ps befo re d ropping back. Cook eventually called it a day at the ha lfway point. Af ter that, BeIl a nd Andlovec kept Davis hones t as they ba ttled for second, with Andlovec racing in second place w hen it cou nted most. Fisher ma sterfu lly withstood the charge of Northern California points leader Bart Bast to take the first Division One Scra tch main win of his y o u ng ca ree r, Jimmy "The Jammer" Sisemo re was the in itia l Scratch Main leader, his rocket s tart from gate four taki ng him straight into the turn-two o utback. As Sisemore an gled w ide, Fisher, w ho was the seco nd rider off the lin e from the pole, d rove hard an d fast o n the tight inside tarma c. From ga te two, Bast wa s d irect ly in Fisher's shadow, dogging the for mer Junior C hampion right fro m the start. Gate thr ee wa s occu pie by Bob Hicks, d who s tar ted poo rly and fo llo wed the action fro m fo ur th . At the four-Iappe r's mi dpoin t, Fis her bob bled and pa rked slightly, allowing the lenacious Bast to pu ll up almost even as they negoriated the front straight. But Fisher made no further mis takes, despite Bast's relentless press ure. Sisemo re followed close be hi n d Ba s t but could n' t mo ve up on the leaders and sett led for third. Once Ferris had sn agg e d th e lead wi th his "w easelis hly" clever little roller, Sammy Bast assumed the role of seco nd- place bloc ker, and Ferris was free to run hi s own ra ce - which is exactly wha t he d id, sail ing clear a nd unfettered to the checkers aboard his Pe terich Cycle /Off Beat Prod uction [awa. Bast stubbornly held on to seco nd , Tommy Hedden \\"35 a close third, and Sisemore was the only rid er to ma ke a positive forward mo ve when he finished in fourth.
