Venegas, who d rew the inside starting posi tion for the second week in a row, also grabbed. the victory for the second consecutive week aboa rd his Borge l Affordable RVI Arai Jawa. " Eve r y n ig h t, e ve ry week, the turns just see m to get tighter and quicker," said the Edgy One while attending a family ga thering after the meeting, "We just got this motor back together tonight befo re the race, an d it was perfect." Venegas' victory was his fifth of the season, wh ich leaves him jus t one shy of Mike Faria 's season-bes t six overall Scra tch ma in wins, with just two reg u la r poi nts eve n ts left in th e 1999 season. Bobby Hed d en, who wa s the only rider to make both ma ins, d rew slot numbe r tw o a nd wa s the seco nd rider off the line, behi nd Venegas , w hen the ta pes went up. Fa ria d rew lane three and Bart Bast on ce aga in star ted from the o utside. Faria beat Bast out of the gate but was fo rced to tra ipse after Bobby Hedden. w ho had a solid hold on seco nd place, on the outside line . Bast also tried to run th e o utside d ir t line but, like Faria , he found the traction to be a bit wanting a nd ended u p finishi ng in four th , Hedden was un abl e to track d own Venegas and collected the st"Cond-place points a coup le of bike lengths ahead of third -p laced Fa ria , Richard Pow ell beat Mark Thomas and Har lan Bast to the checkered flag in the seco nd -division main. The third -d ivision first -p lace trophy went to Ron Wood sfo rd, wh o ou td ista nced Greg Hoot on and Brian Leventon . IVA, JULY30 In a close ra ce with Todd Somer s and Lonny ap Ko p p, Larry Marsh wo n the 15-1 Pro main ev ent a t th e Spokane Sho rt Track in Airway Heights. Somers stole the holeshot and managed to hold Marsh nff through mos t of the race. with Kopp right beh ind the whole way, bu t Marsh took the win. In secondround action, Dona ldson ass umed the class lead and the fast time with an exce llent 3.753-Sl.'Cond ru n, only to see Pau l Hackba rth , Whee lw rig ht's traveling buddy, na il a 3 .697·seco nd tim e to mov e out into the lead and set yet another fast tim e. But Wheelw rig ht wa s not to be denied, a nd he flew his Hond a high ov e r the top in a crowd-thrilling 3.631 seconds to take the class win and the coveted Fast Ti me trop hy . Do ug Campbell joined the three-second club w ith a 3,974-second ru n on his KX500 for fou rth , whi le [ohn Scro ggins was almos t there with a 4,010seco nd time on his Honda for fifth. "Flyin'" Bob Fisher had a no the r one of his good ou tings on his Superior Cycl e Sportster, as he a lso picked up tw o class wins . Riding in the Seni or class, he carded a 4.377-seco nd time for the wi n, with Gay le jen kins claiming second in 4.438 second s on his Hond a , just barely good enough to beat Tim Wigg ins and his Tri umph with a 4.464-sccon d time. Fisher was even faster in the Push rod class , posting an excellent 4.134SL'COnd time on his first run. and it held up for th e win . Bu t ch Fetters too k second o n h is Har ley. just edging yo ung Josh Carrier, who pu t his Tr iu m p h ove r in 4.224 se co nds for thi rd .
