Then , a few races in to th e mains, th e fi rst spa tte rs of rain hit the scoring sheets. As the spa tters turned into showers , and rid ers ran for their cano pies or vehicles, Mainess wo rried that his car might g e t s tuck in th e parking lot , but h e wasn 't concerned about riding in any mud. "It's an equalizer," he smiled . Mainess has been observed to be very good in the mud . At the s ta r t, Scott jumped out in fro nt, with only Nathan Lekson, leader of Unlimited Am , ah ead of him. Scot t Moore of Hick ory, North Carolina, got off the line well and ran second to Mainess for a couple of lap s until an un expected slick spo t sp u n his YZ around and d em ot ed Moor e to the end of the line . Bas t, w ho so fa r in '99 hasn't wo n a lot of mains , still leads the po ints chase due to h is wee kl y co ns is te ncy, a n d h e s h owed th e ve n u e' s bi g g est crowd of the season that he is still the m a n to beat in Speedwa y' s prem ier eve nts. Mike Faria and Jimmy Sisem ore tied for seco nd place, a sing le notch behind Bast, with 13 points apiece. "I knew coming in here tod ay that I had a real d ecent cha nce of winnin g this th in g, (a nd that) m y first heat against Mik e a nd Jimmy w ou ld decid e a lot ," sai d Bast. "And ha vin g the po le didn't. hurt my chances any." Chad Fe licia open ed up th e s ho w with a clear win ahead of Paul Orlandi and St ev e Mart yn s e. In th e s econd heat, Bast jumped ou t in front of Faria and Sisemore, pu tting Fari a on e point o ff th e pace and Sisemore two ba ck when he finished thi rd . Tommy Hedd en kept pac e with Bast in th e third h e at, lead in g la st yea r's Ca l-Ex po cha mp ion, Bob Hicks , and Ian Ferris to th e che cke red . Ryan Fisher w rapped up th e first of th e five ro u nds w it h a wi n fro m the pole over Da ve Fari a and Sam m y Bast. In th e second round , the bro thers Bast faced each othe r and finished first and secon d: Bart won, and Sammy held on to the ru nn er -u p sp ot, ahea d of Ian Ferris. Faria got into the wi n colum n in heat two w hen he o u tga te d Robert Curry, Felicia and Rick Sha fer. Sisemore a lso recovered quickly fro m h is firstround mista kes, pu ttin g a qu ick end to any th oughts Fish er m ig ht ha ve ha d abou t continui ng his perfect score. Fisher led the first lap and a half before the "Ja m mer" worked h im o n th e ins ide line , ta ki ng hi s thre e p oint s a w ay . Orl andi and Da ve Faria took turns taking them selves out of contention in the round's last rid e, giving the win to Rich Marcucci and se co nd to th e off-pace Tommy Hedden. Mike Faria opened up th e thi rd rourid wit h a win over his olde r bro ther Dave, and Bob Hicks . Bast left everyone at the line in the next heat; Fishe r got no s ta r t to s peak of a n d h a d to work around T omm y Hedd en in the lat e going just to sal vage a sing le po int. Sisem ore collected the C last win o f th e th ird round the hard way: Th e "Ja m me r" had to work his wav to the front after a terrible start left hi~ tra ilin g eve ntu al second- p lace finisher Or land i and Sam my Bast after the initi al lap. Sis em ore ca m e r igh t ba c k and opened u p the fou rth round with a win fro m the pol e. Cu rry held off Hedden for seco nd . In the second start, Sammy Bast apparently tou ched the tapes and wa s thrown ou t by referee Scott Callahan. The seco nd -yea r official, who had th e une n via ble ta sk of tr yi ng to deal with th e mecha ni ca ll y d eterioratin g startin g gate, had trouble wi th inconsistent calls and a severe lack of cred ibility due to rev ersed decisions. Goin g in to the final round, Faria a nd Bast led w it h 11 p oints and Sisemor e sa t one point back a t 10. Fish er fin ish ed h is ni ght jus t t he wa y he started it: with a snap py start, four flaw less laps and a three-poin t win . Rick Shafer and Scott McNe il scored their first points of the meeting when they fini shed second and third, respective ly. Sisemore did hi s best to keep the pressure on the leaders in the next heat when he dominated Ferris and Felicia o n his wa y to th e win . Th e referee experience d more problems in the next event when Ma rt ynse fe ll in th e first corner and Mike Faria , who obv iously felt a n unev en star t wa s th e cau s e, s lowed in turn two, bringing ou t the red .clipboard . On th e r estart, Faria, w ho s ta r ted fro m th e o u ts ide lan e , had trouble negotiating th e fir st se t of turns and Sa mmy Ba st a t th e sa me tim e, wh ich allowed qu ick-ga ting lan e-t w o starter Tom m y H edd en to g ra b a lea d th at "F ly in '" Mike co u ld ne ver overta ke . Faria managed to get seco nd place back . in the lat e goings , bu t the hot-and-coldrunnin g Hedden had tak en a va luable point in the process.
