Mu ch like in his qualifyin g win, Neether maintained the p o int position , alth ou gh thi s tim e it w asn 't in a runaway fash ion , as Olson . got a ro u nd Feist and clawed hi s way into contention w ith leader Neether on the ro ugh , dusty ova l, setting up a battle that wo uld go down to the fini sh. O lson challen ged a ll of Nee the r's atte mpts to break free, th e tw o finishing in a close 1-2 configura tion. Feist picked up third place, ahead of Kawasaki rid ers David Wolf and Roger Was so n. Nee ther also had close competition (Above) Eric Rickman (33W) he ld off Greg Tysor (47C) for the 600 Expert win at the open ing s ho rt track of the week on the J ackpine Gyps ies ' J .C. "Pa ppy" Hoel Short Trac k. N for the 600cc Amateur main event win , a s Ind ia na' s David Wolf stayed in close proximity to him armed with a Yamaha TT 500 . A threeway battle for third raged behind the duo, headed up by Honda rid er Mike Opstedahl, bu t it wa s the closely fought confron tation between Ne e ther and Wolf th a t deci ded th e win , wit h eether beati ng Wolf by a w heel to cla im wi n number two. Neethe r's thr ee-class domina tion was finalized after the talented teena ger had also don e a number on th e Open Ama teur co n tes ta nts. Opsted ahl initi ally ch all en ged N eether fo r th e lead position, placing N eether' s night-long qu est in je o p a r dy , but in th e en d , it was Neether prevailing to cap off his fine st . mo men t o f th e se a s o n , ahead of Opstedahl, Wolf, Phillip Wolf, and Feist. O ther riders enjoying dominance of their clas ses w ere Cobra-mounted Alex Jorgensen, who for the second night in a row w on the 50cc final; and Kawasaki rider Clayt on Riggle, winner of th e 60 and 80cc main even ts.
