Another Wes t Virginian, John Bu nne r, n otch ed hi s name in the record books by bei ng the first 80cc rider to crest the 220-foot hill. Bunner put his Yamaha over the top on his firs t try and was the only rid er under 125cc to win ' by vi rtue of a timed run (8.31) rather than by d istan ce. W yoming's Nate N eeth er l ed Nick Olson, Chris Feist and Kantor a t the start of the 250cc A main, but it was Olson challenging Neether for the lead on the first three la p s u ntil Kantor, w h o to ok several lap s to ge t around Feist , caught and displa ced O lson.
