a minute, was in fourth after two circuits,
while Mike Windmann was fifth.
With lapped tra ff ic no w a fac to r,
Leivan had a bit of a ga p on Kuczk o .
Both rid ers w ere still turnin g in the
fastest lap times and pulling clear of the
pack. Leivan held a 16-second edge over
Ku cz ko goi ng into lap fo ur, b u t he
sto pped for fresh goggles an d gave up a
few second s. However, Leivan encountered a problem and lost e ven more time.
"I ca u g h t a lapper a nd h e tri ed to
m o ve over in a p lace h e p r obably
shou ld n' t have," Leivan explained. "He
got ou t of contro l and fell right in front
of me and I ran ove r his bike. My brake
ped al caug h t his front wh eel and it bent
it und er th e case. It happene d in th e
motocross section and I had a heck of a
tim e ge tting slo wed do wn for th e corners. Finally I stopped and bent it back
the best I cou ld ."
Ku czko was more than willing to
retake the lead . Leivan go t going quickly and set ou t afte r the speeding Aussie.
Kuczko, with a clea r track in front of
him , turned in the fastest lap of the da y,
a 25:55. Leivan, thou gh, was on the gas
as well, and he used the fast fields to his
ad vantage, moving ahead three-quarte rs
of the way throu gh the lap .
Goi n g into th e final lap, th e gap
betwee n Leivan and Kuczko was a mere
seven seconds, but Kuczko opted to stop
for a s p lash o f fuel a n d lost sig h t of
Leivan, The early part of the final lap was
not wit hout incident for Leivan, how ever.
"I cras hed going throu gh the pit area,
right in front of so me frie nd s," Leivan
admitted. "Both times I fell today, I was
in plain sight of everyone. Fortu nately I
was able to get going qu ickly both times
and avo id an y further embarrass ment."
Leivan recovered and kept the hammer down for half a lap , as yet un aw are
tha t Kucz ko had stopped for fuel.
" When I saw th at I h ad a prett y
&ood lead , I backed it d own a lit tle and
co nce n tra te d on ge tti ng throu gh the
lap pers witho u t any probl em s:' Leivan
ex plained .
He wa s able to d o jus t that, and completed the fifth and final lap with a lead
of 55 seconds on Kuczko.
Leivan said that he enjoye d racing
with the Au stra lian rid er.
"We had a grea t race and he was really fun to rid e with - reall y smoo th and
fast. I a m sure tha t if he didn't have to
stop for gas that last lap, it would have
been rea lly close," sa id th e An swer /
