Ragin·g Bulloch at Cedar City Motocross By Dick Goo dw in CEDARCITY, lT JUtY10 T, D&P Performance-ba cked Nick Bulloch dropped da bomb on the 80cc Juni or (12-15) class, lea ving the competition in ruins by the end of the day. Bulloch raged out of the gate, beating Tile Art speedster Zac Humphries an d Shane Veml und to the first turn. From that point, it didn' t get any better for his riva ls, as Bulloch tu rn ed up the wick and took off. No Fear's Joshua Lafountaine and Kyle Shearer went down in a heap.. forc ing Sh earer o ut of the race. While Bulloch was off in the d ista nce. dicing with the Intermedia tes , Humphries wa s establishing himself in second with a big lead. As Bulloch was checking ou t on the field and che king in with the prize, c Humphries a nd Vernlund le d Ry an Boz a ck acros s the finish line. Bulloch blasted off the line to lead mot o two, a he ad of Vern lu nd . Humphries and La f ou ntain e both got by. Vernlund in the swi tchbac ks. BulJoch was o n a roll, and nobody was goi ng to get close to him today. Humphries and Lafountaine Were havin g a pretty good di ce for seco nd until Humphries slid o ut at the finis h- line corncr . Humphrie s qu ickly rem ounted. and passed LaFountaine in the ba ck of the tr ack. Bulloch s urfed o n in for another ea sy win a nd the overall SOcc Jun ior (12-15) crow n, whil e Humphries held off Lafou ntaine to gra b second, and seco nd overall. Vernlund's steady racing was reward ed with third overa ll, ahead of la Fountaine. Another racer having a good day at th e Zion Mot ocr oss Association-sanctioned e ve n t was Fo x /IMS-backcd Ronnie G ood wi n, a s th e Motorcycle Ce n tra l bad boy smo ked the 60cc Junior (I>-S) division. Good win popped the firstra ce ho les hot, jus t a head of Pro Spec's Dillon Glendenning and FMF /Spy /Tile Art's Brod ie Humphri es. The man o n the m ove, however, wa s Tanner Krah enbuhl, as the Mot or cycle Central hot shoe wa s flying after a midpa ck s ta rt, worki ng his way up to second by laf> two . On the white-flag lap, it was Goodwin with a huge lead and th e w in. JULY 10 A gro up of Iowa hillclirnbe rs, most of them fro m the Anamosa a rea, ha ve been runn ing the 0 · 15 an d D-17 ci rc u its th is yea r. I li ke to call th is gro u p "Th e \Vild Bunch," and it incl ud es w ad e and Lane Schultz, Jake Shaffer, Dou g Lewin and Chris Meyer. They are tremendou s competitors and a grea t deal of fun to wat ch . They ride bea uti fu ~ly set-up orange-a nd- white machines, ran ging fro m Meyer's Tri umph 500cc tw in to Wad e's big Harl ey. At the Centra l Dlinois MC hillclimb, the Wild Bunch entered three classes: the 75Occ, Open and l'u shrod. They claim ed both firs t and second in a ll three clas ses, and also turned in th e fas tes t times of the da y. "Wild Wad e" Sch u ltz took th e wins in th e Open and Pu shrod clas ses o n h is big Harley, wit h Lane coming in seco nd on his snorti n' No rto n in both classes . Wad e rode only once in the O pen cla ss, posting a bli st ering 2.799-second first -round tim e that no on e cou ld bea t. Lan e came the closest wi th a fine 2 .997·~cond ride of his o wn. Steve Shafer wen t over in 4.041 seco nds for thi rd, w ith Bu tch Fette rs a nd his Harl ey running four th, a nd Jacob Bail ey runn in g fifth o n his SOOcc Triumph. Spea ring kept the pressure on and hounded Jablonski for five more laps until David Wallac e. wh o had moved up from nextto-last pla ce, passed him . At the chec ke red, it wa s Jablons ki in fi rs t, Wa llace in seco nd and Spearing in third . wallace agai n powered out with the lead in mot o tw o and stay ed ther e for th ree laps. Then he we nt down. Jim McConnell inherited the lead , with Spea ring racing at his rear wheel. Spea ring sta lled hi s Kaw asaki a nd Ron Rud er go t past. Th e moto ended with McConnell in first, Rud er in sec ond , and Jablonski in the third slo t. In the Master B class, Jack Rot en didn't let th e hot weather s lo w him d o wn as h e put together his set of solid mot o w ins. Alan O 'Brien blas ted in at an a we so me pa ce for his secondplace standing in both motos. Geoff 'A rn o ld led all th e o t he r Amat eurs until Rand y Bruce mu scled pa st on lap two, and kept the pow er up a ll the way to secu re his firstplace win. Steve Jennings s na ppe d up seco nd, and Barry Hale collected third . Arnold took the lead in the seco nd mot e , but Jennin gs qu ickly s ho t past o n the seco nd lap and led th in gs th er eafter. Ba r ry 's fast pace earned him seco nd, and Bruce moved in wi th third. Novice Simo n managed to ho ld off a hotl y pursu ing Sam Eng lish for his first- place win.
