JillY10-11 es ra h Kawasak i-backed Ma rk Jun ge pu t together three of the bes t races at the WERA Dixie Cycle Jam for a th ird , a second and a win on his Ma rs ha ll Distributing-sponsored Kawasaki ZX-6 R and ZX-9R Super Stock bikes. Jun ge had tw o titanic ba ttles wit h Tea m Gre en Kawasaki rider Brian Lantz, and one involvin g both Lan tz and David Rose that had the crow d on its feet. The C Super Stock rac e wa s the first mat ch-u p between Ju nge and Lantz on thei r Kawasaki ZX-6Rs. The hard-charging Suzuki GSX-R600s of Rose, Arclight Su zuki rid er Joe Prussi an o and Brian Gibbs also got into the mi x, making for a terrific ba ttle a t the fro nt. Gibbs was makin g his re tu rn to WERA raci ng after a 10-week layoff to recover from a broken ba ck he suffered w hile training on a motocross bike. After an aborted start to clear fallen mo torcycles fro m the gravel trap at turn 10, the race go t und er w ay w it h Lantz g ra bb ing th e holeshot in front of Junge and Gibbs. Junge made an unbelievable pass for the lead on Lantz in turn 12, a la M iguel Du hamel on A n thony Gobe r t at las t yea r's AMA N ati on a l, tha t had fans gap in g in ama zemen t. Rose worked his way pa s t Gibbs and Prussiano to catch the leading pair and join their fight. Both Rose and La n tz passed Ju nge' s und erpowered bike on the back s tra ig h t at th e ha lfway flags. Junge mad e a heroic bid for second under the Mich elin Bridge to close th e gap to Rose, but o n th e fina l turn of the last lap , Ju nge ran wid e, allow ing Lantz ba ck by to take second. Gibbs held off Prussia no to rou nd o ut the top five and remove any doubts that he had los t any spe ed d uring his tim e off. The s tage w as set fo r g reat race ac tio n at the follo w in g da y's WERA Na tional C ha llenge eve n t du ring the ina ug ural Dixie Cycle Jam . Junge a nd La ntz m et agai n in the Kaw asaki contingency-paying C Superbik e race, w itho ut int erference from others to d ampen th eir clash . Lan tz took the op portunity bet ween races to mount Dunlop slicks on his ZX-6R, w hi le Junge stayed wi th the same M ich elin Pilo t DO T tires he h ad u s ed in th e ea r lier race. Lantz im mediately jumped into th~ lead from the front row but was overtak en by Jun ge before the end of the first la p . Th e scenari o w ould work ou t th e same every lap : Junge wou ld find so me wa y aro u nd Lantz in th e ba ck sec tio n and lead across the start-finish lin e, but Lan tz would use the draft and su perior d riv e, courtesy of his new slicks, to pass Jun ge o n the front strai g ht away before tum one. With onl y one lap rem aining, Lantz made a pus h to ke ep Jun g e behind him on the ba ck of th e course after taking the lead in tum one again . It worked, and Lan tz held off Jun ge by a frac tion of a second to ta ke the win and the majority of the contingency mon ey. Junge had one ra ce left to earn th e top spot, and he d id just that w ith his Mi ch elin-shod ZX-9R in the For m ula One race. Scott Carpenter, w ho wo n the A Su pe r Stock eve n t ea rlier in the day, go t the holes hot , bu t he relinqu ished th e V lead before the first lap was in the books to a d etermi ned Junge. Ju ng e put his head down and pus hed hard to open a two- to three-s econd lead at the finish over the Yama ha YZF R-1s of Carpenter and Norman Hammond. junge's ZX-9R wa s caught o n radar a t a top speed of 161.8 mph, making him th e fastes t bike at the track. Gib bs and Prussiano continued their co m p etit io n, th is time in th e B Su per Stock race, aboard GSX-R 750s. Pru ssiano took the lead from holesh ot ar tist Curry Justice and rod e hard to gai n a slight lead over the field. Gibbs worked his way into second .quickly, but was hou nded by 1888-FAST-LAP rider Chris Caylor until the end . Caylor eventu ally wore Gibbs down and took th e second spot on the w hite-flag la p, bu t he d id no t have the time to mount a cha rge on Prussiano . The 125 cc G ran d Pri x race w a s a p recursor to the GP RA/National Cha llenge even t on Su nday, w it h 29 entries in the Sportsma n race . The two teen age sensations of ihe American Grand Pri x ra cing scene, Ja son DiSalvo a nd Ben Spies, were on han d to go head to head with reigning WERA 125cc GP Champion Michael Himmelsbach, as well as each o ther. The crowd was no t disappo in ted . The lead tri o swa p ped p os itions tw o or three tim e's per lap, with the 'third p lace rider go ing to th e lead and the leader d ro pp ing back to third corner after corner. Him me lsbach 's experience paid off in the end, and he put h imself in th e righ t pl a ce at th e right time for th e win. Spies managed to get the bette r of DiSal vo, bu t eac h of them came away fro m the race w ith a better idea of w ha t to ex pec t th e next day at the National. DiSalvo came back later in the day to take his first w in on his new Alien Racin g / Applied Busin ess Sys tems Honda RS-250 Grand Pri x racer in the Formula Two class, ahead of Spies and perennial two-stroke pilot David Boosales.
