In clu d ed were the Italians Bau and Paola Cazzola, Texa n [acki Hudson, Washington locals Nikki Harris, Jenn y Pray and Traci Fleming, New Zealand's Tania Satchwell, and Californ ia ns Michelle Bednar, Dawn Pia zza , Sheena Patterson and Bonnie Warch. The sce nic northwes t Was hougal track was in excellent form when the gate drop ped fo r moto one, Fleming g ra bbed the holeshot, and se tt li ng in behind her was WML's current runneru p in poin ts, Satchwell, followed by Bau and Harris. During th e first lap, Fleming went d ow n su rrendering her lead to Sa tchwell. On ce in the lead, the New Zealand Women' s Mo tocross Cham p io n held th at positio n for the re st of th e 20m inu te ra ce an d took th e w in . Meanwhile, the ba ttle for second was heating up, as Fle mi ng wen t dow n a second tim e near th e fir st co rner . Th is tim e, Harri s too k ad van ta ge , m o ving in to third pla ce. On ce in third, Harri s began to pic k up the pa ce. On the second- tolast lap, she made a charge on Bau, but was un abl e to ge t past her. It w a s Sa t chwe ll wh o go t th e .hol esh ot on the second moto, follow ed by Warch: Bau, Fleming and Harris. On the first climb of the famous "H orsepower Hill," Warch was passed by both Bau and Fleming. Du ri ng this ' ba ttl e , Satchwell ma na ged to pu t so me d istance be tween herself and the o the r ri d ers. As th ey ca me o ver the famo us "Ski Jump," Harris made the pass around Warch, puttin g h ers elf in fourth p lace. For the next few laps, Satchwell held on to fir st , with Bau in second, Fleming in third and Ha rris in fourth. O n lap four , the 18-yearo ld Harri s wo rked her way around fellow Northwest na tive Flemi ng a n d moved into the thirdplace position. Satchwell was beg in ni ng to get"tired an d Bau was gaining on her. By the fifth lap, Bau made a clean pass in the whoops, showing the crowd just why she is k nown as th e faste st women's motocross rider in the world. On lap seven, Hams started reeling in Satchwell, com pleting the job as they raced through the whoops. Bau held the lead for the rest of the moto, showing her excitement by doing a can-can over the Chuck Sun ju mp. At the checkers, it was Bau, Satchwell and Harris. I won the Women 's Itali an Champ io ns h ip seven tim es, so thi s yea r, I d ecid e to come her e. I race w it h th e men th ere now . Nex t year, 1 think I'll move her e in the Uni ted Sta tes to race with the men ." Bau s h a re d h er th ou ght s o n h er motos. "I took second in the first moto, because I started bad, an d the track was ver y wet thi s morning - so slip pery , 1 cou ld n' t tak e first position," she sa id .
