C h r is Din een By Doug Ka rc her I WASHOUGAL, WA, JULY 31 r a ma ha ri de r Sp u d W alter returned to th e AMA Western Four-Stroke Nationa l MX Series with a ban g. Making his first a p pea ra nc e o f the eries this yea r, Walters won bo th motos n the scenic Wash ougal race course to record the ove ra ll win. Fini shing second to Wal ters in the o vera ll column was Dustin Nelso n, followe d by Pa ul \i\'inn. All three rider s wer e Yamaha-mo unted . As the gates d ropped for the start of the first mo to, the unmistakable thunder of fou r-stroke m ot orcycles, with throttles pinned, resounded fro m the sta rting line, as the big thumper s clawed th ei r wa y up the sho rt st art hill and into the fi rs t tu rn . When the p ack o f ri d ers crossed the w hite holeshot line at th e exit of the tum, it w as the BBR Yamah a of Rich Taylor out in fro nt. Taylor se t a quick pa ce, m an ag in g to ho ld on to the lea d for be tter t han ha lf of th e m ot o befo re be ing passed by Wa lters. "I missed practice this morning, so I did n 't get a ny la ps a n d w as n' t s u re where the tra ck was going," said th e White Brothe rs -b acked Walters. "So I kin d of followed Rich (Taylor) for about half a mot o a nd passe d him an d then . jus t rode a smooth race. Having missed practice didn't seem to bother Walter s too much, as he held the lead for m ost of th e remaining la ps, ta king the win in his firs t ou ting of the series. Hard on his tail , the MotoWorid of El Ca jon-ba cked Yam aha of elson's w as coming on fast. "I didn't ge t too good of a start an d just tried chargi ng through, got up into th e lead pa ck of Spud and Rich Ta ylor and myself, all going for the lead ," Nel son said. "I actually go t by both of them for a little bit, but I blew out a berm and they both got ba ck by m e. I ended up working back past Rich and tried to put a good charge and catch up to Spud and ma ybe ge t him on th e last lap, but I started fatiguing a little bit and w as n' t . close enough to ge t a good shot at him." In the second m o to, it w as Nathan Woods with the holesh ot; unfortunat ely for him, his lead w oul d not last for lon g, as Walters, Nelson, Winn and Taylor all go t around him by the fou rth la p . "I got an okay start - a bou t fourth or fifth - passed a bo u t th re e g uys o r so the fi rst couple lap s and ju st ro d e s moo th , " Wal ters sa id . " I saw P aul (Win n) in seco nd place . He w as riding right on me th e w ho le ra ce, and I had o nly a cou p le seconds and .gave it all I had and made sure he stayed behind me." His smoo th riding sty le paid off, as Walter s w as able to collect his seco nd win of the day to secure the overa ll. Thi s time ar ound, the hard-eharging N el son had to settle for th ird , which wa s still good enough for second overall, and a handful of points. "I go t ab out an eighth or 10th-place sta rt and ju st rode on e stead y pace th e w hole moto," Nelson sa id . " I go t a littl e tired at th e end . The two leader s w ere go ne by the time I got to third, and they were rid ing fast so I cou ld n' t catch u p and ended up third ." Winn, of Yacolt, Wa shington, was, . like Walter s , making h is firs t a p pearance of th e se ries and put his Yamaha int o fifth an d seco nd pl aces . H is q uick ri d in g gained him-the full atten tion of th e crow d, and a spo t on th e pod ium, wi th th ird overa ll. Th ere w ere so m e cha nges in p ositions in the po ints race, as Woods' fifth place finis h gave him the lead with 116 poi nts , tw o ahea d of Scott Myers, who finis hed sixth overa ll. elso n' s seco nd place overall pushed him up to third in points, with 109. eN (Ya m); 20 .
