Wen z showed the competition the fast way aroWld the Sadd leback Race· Park track by tak ing wins in the Open Pro and 250 Pro classes. Wenz lined up for the 250 Pro race with fire in his eyes . At the drop of the flag. Wenz and c.j. Beving were gone. Wcnz had the lead , and Be,·ing began wo rking his new trademarked high line. Rick Reed wa s in third, with Brad Letcher in fourth. Wenz tried to ge t away early, but Beving wo uld not let go, using the high line to ge t a good drive out of the comers. The battle for third hea ted up as Letcher constantly switched lines; goi ng side by side wit h Reed for several la ps u nti l Letc he r se cu red th e position and began chasing Beving. Wcnz steadily pulled a lead and took the checkered flag. with Beving in seco nd , and Letcher and Reed in third an d fourt h. For the first few laps , icolodi sat in Vinc e n t'~ s hadow while Adams progress ivel y opened up a larger gap on the rest of the field. Vincent d idn "t back off, and two laps later he draftc'C! and attempted to get past Nicolodi at t he same s po t o n the ra ce tra ck . H o we ver, Nico lod i held stro ng a nd kept Vincent in third . As the ne xt-tOolast lop go t u nd er way, Vincen t once again closed up on Nico lodi. In the Bridges to ne / Race r's Edge Form ula Two GP, Bryan Kovari ck grabbed the ho lesho t off the lin e, with Bryce Gross hot on his tail. Down the back straight, Gross power ed past Kova rick on his Hollywood Motorcycles-spon· ~ ored Yamaha R6 to take o ve r th e lead . But Kovarick was n't willing to gh'e up just yet, and he co n tin u ed to hang in G ross' draft. Mean· while, Steve Ottinger, ru n ning in third, was cha llenged and passed by Jerry Evans . For the remainder of the lO-lap race, Kovarick look ed for ev ery o ppo rt u n ity to ge t past Gros s. In particular , Kovari ck routine ly po wered up a nd would nearly pass G ross in th e long turn-eight sweeper. Starting the final lap, Kovaric k moved a longside Gross exiting tu rn two, but was sh ut out going into tu m three. A few seconds later, th e lea ders came up on a lapped ride r. Gross made it past wit hout a p rob lem , but Kovarick was slowed sligh tly. That was just enough to prevent Kovarick from making another cha llenge for the lead , and at the line it was Gross with the wi n, followed by Kovarick in second and Evan s in third. . The Publi c Imaging / Thousand O ak s Honda HRC 125cc Grand Prix turned into a real dogfight as four racers battled for the win. Initiall y, Vick y ja ckson-Bell was in fro n t of the pa ck, foll owed by Erik Dadej in second and LaVa ug hn Daniel in thi rd . Daniel made an initial attempt to get past Dadej in tum eight on the first lap but was sh u t out. However, on lap two of the l O p eve nt, she powered pas t Dad ej -la as the racers we nt d own the back straigh t a nd into tur n eight. However, Dadej retoo k St"Cond th ree tu rns later. just pa st the holfway poi nt , Bell sud de nly s lo w e d, pu lled i nto t he h ot pi ts , a n d th e n returned to the race. Tha t moved Dad ej into the lead , with Dani el in seco nd a nd Step he n Bowline in third. But Dade j's hold on the lead was still precariou s, as Daniel was lookin g for a ny way to get pas t him. She fou nd her spo t rounding tum two, pu shing Dad ej into SL'Cond . The event was held in and around the mine tailings next to the his toric little town of La Porte, wi th nine new sectio ns designed by org anizc'fS Da\i d Brickley and Vern Browning. Riders enjoyed a fun loop linking section.o;o littered \\-;th interesti ng obstacles, all in a setting stt.'Cped in Old West history. Grea t scenery abo u nd ed, and if you looked at the scene below from the top of the hillclimb at section eight, it was easy to imagi ne the days of the Gold Rush, with hun d reds of mi ners working the "d iggins· below, and a La Porte ma in street bustli ng with men , wagons and hon>t."S head t.-d for the back-coun try mines. In the Modem Bike Two class, Devon Heckmann kep t his scrieslong win streak alive with a 1S-po int ride a nd victory over Mike Schweitzer (18) and Andy Lawrence (35). BiU Laudn er clt.a ned nine sections en rou te · to th e Mod e m Classic Ad va nced wi n , w h ile accumulating 58 poin ts on a tou gh two·line. The on ly remaining two-line co mpetitor was Max Malsba ry, who also cha lkt.-d up a seore lof 58 po in ts to not ch the Juni or Advanct.-d -class win . The Modern Bike Th ree class was a Pa rker picnic, wit h Bria n Parker ta king fir st wit h a sco re o f 22 po in ts, a nd Ga ry Par ker nabbing third place with 0 3~-poi nt trio\. In the midd le of the " Pa r ker Sandwic h" was Tuey Dick er son , who slipp<.'C! in there for SL'Clmd, with 37 poin ts. The Jun ior NO\."ice riders a ll agra>d the sections were challenging bu t fun , a nd the loop trails made it a great tria l.even for begin ners . Whcn the fun wa s over, Ben Heckma nn grabbed first \",it h a on e-point ride, followed by Matt Silva (9). And y Mal,bary (19) and Max Naif (21).
