in third. By the fifth la p, Sulliva n an d Cook were
very im pressive while dicing it ou t for second.
Sullivan was gaining on the leader whi le trying
to shake off Cook when the race was called, two
la ps short, d ue to fuel on the track. Shu lts, us ually a top-five contende r, rod e exceptionally in the
rai n. Sullivan admi tted to taking it too easy in
the beginning while fee ling ou t his ra in tires.
However. he was happy with the tires' pe rformance.
"My Dunl op tires hooked up reall y well," he
said.

From laps three to six, Tripl ett and joh nson
fou ght a mi ghty battl e for the lead, p assin g

speed . O n lap seven, johnson go t underneath

they ent ered the curve. johnson responded by
rocketi ng off turn two onto the back stra ight,

him.
Triplett shad owed jo hnson d own the back
straig ht, through turns three and four, literally
pu shing him, soaking up all the rocks and dirt
that johnson could throw at him and look ing for
a mistake on Johnson's part to retake the lead .
As they took the wh ite flag on th e ninth lap,
Triplett 's mount sp it flam es from the exhaust
and hi. cha rge slowed drastically. johnson sped
down th e bac k straight, sud den ly by himself
and un aware of Triplett 'S pro blem (an electrical
co nnection pu lle apart by the dirt sp ray ed in
d
thei r bat tle). Bretl, Nick Hamm er and Dcruvter
had pushed Triplett back into fifth place bythe
ti me the checkered fl.'g fell, bu t nobody was
ahead of Johnson at the end .

Portland Road Race

David Cook and Mike Sullivan eac h rode away
with two wi ns at Portland Intern ation al Raceway. Ridin g his Yamaha R6, Cook domina ted
the 600cc classes . while Kawasaki Team Gree nsu pported Sulli van was on top of both the Open
Supersport and Open Soperbike classes aboard
his ZX9.
In 600cc Supcrspo rt. Rob Carpenter, aboard
a Yama ha R6, jumped ou t in front, followed by
Ala n Schm idt , Sullivan a nd Cook. Coo k mad e
his wa y to seco nd by the third lap . Burni ng up
the front stra ight on lap three, Coo k was denied
the lead spo t w he n he a tte mp ted to pa ss Ca rpenter in tum one . Dra fting Ca rp enter on th e
straig ht on th e fou rth lap , Coo k eas ed around
him to take th e lead . Coo k mainta ined his lead
for two more laps until Carpenter dem onstrated
he could nail the sa me move. On the eighth lap,
Schmidt pa ssed Su lliva n for third at th e very
end o f the s tra igh t. Th en Sullivan smoked by
him on the brakes at the start of turn one. Cook
an d Carpenter co ntinu ed thei r tu ssle for two
more la p s, w ith Coo k nabb in g the w in by a
whisker.
The Open Su pe rspo rt race w as a rea l nailbit er . David Coo k aced th e holesh ot, followed
by Sullivan an d RI rid er Mike Mitchell. Sullivan
passed Cook in be twee n turns three and fou r,
but Cook stayed on Sulliva n's tail throu gh the
lap a nd smoked by him on the front straig ht.
Sullivan was denied a repeat mov e on lap two
bu t settled in clo se to Coo k for th e next two
laps . Delirious from sniffing Co ok ' s exha ust.
Su lliva n pa ssed Co ok inside turn fo ur . Co ok
stayed with him and us ed the dra ft-and-pass on
th e fr ont st raight. Su lli va n ran right up on
Cook ' s tire on the fifth lap and a tte mpted to
repea t his pr cvious pass in turn four. Cook and
Su lli va n repeat ed the even ts of laps four a nd
five on la ps six an d seven. O n th e eig hth lap .
Su llivan made a huge mov e on Cook, pa ssing
him on th e ou tside in turn thr ee. Cook man aged
to sneak by Su llivan on the front stra ight on lap
n in e. Sullivan stayed o n Coo k lik e s ti n k on
manure until he m ad e a n im p ressi ve pass on
the outs id e in turn four. Su llivan man aged to
mak e the pass stick un til the finis h lin e. Cook
came in second, and Kar l Sche nk crossed th e
line in third.
In 750cc Su perspo rt, it was all Rob Ca rpe nter
after he managed to snea k around john Dugan
in turn four of the first lap .
"The Ya ma ha (R6) was runnin g good a nd I
was glad to be up fron t," Ca rpe n ter reported.
john Dugan finis hed second , foll owed by
jacob Holden .
After dicing it ou t on the first two laps with
Anthony Man ciu, Dugan pret ty mu ch coasted to
the win . Man ciu pla ced seco nd . The th ird spo t
was occupied by jacob Hold en.
