Davenport takes the throne
at Cedar City Motocross

South Valley Motorspo rts ' Gray Davenport took
on the 85cc Intermediate class and smo ked the
other last mini gu ys. jH Racing 's Tyson Hernande z grabbed the first-mote holeshot, with Davenport, and Kappy Kealamakia glued to his rear
fende r. Dav enpor t pressured Hernandez and
made his move at the tricky doub les before the
rhythm sec tion, outjumping Hernandez to take
over the lead . Kealamakia stayed close in third
as the top th ree pu lled a lead on the field . Dav-
enpor t incr eased t he p re ssu re as he flashed
ar ound th e co u rse a t a n im p ress ive p a ce. As
Davenport soared to the first-mo to win . a really
fierce bat tle wa s takin g place behind him lor second . After seve ra l la ps of clos e racin g, Kea lamakia was able to edge He rnandez for the r un ner-up spot.

were vying for second, as Tyler Mortensen was
trying to stay with the lea d pack. Davenport

with his sty le and speed. He was the only mini
rid er doin g the big doubles. Davenport we nt on
to win his seco nd stra ight race and the overall
8xc Intermediate tro phy , as Kealam akia surged
into seco nd , and seco nd overall. Fraughton finis he d a hea d of Mortensen to na il d own third
overa ll.

Brandon Barnes snatched the ho les hot in the
first l 25ce Pro race, bu t Partridge whistled pas t
him in the third com er. Barnes woul dn' t let go
and sta yed in Partridge's shadow as they railed
aro un d the track. Fina lly, Partridge eked out a
close win . Barn es scored seco nd, ahea d of Sam
Morten sen a n d Smi th 's Mo tor spor ts' Kor ey
Smith.
In th e seco nd mo to, Barnes once aga in corralled the holeshot. Partridge zapped him at the
fi nish~ line tabl eto p, and it was pass-an d ~re pa ss
for the rest 01 the race. jason Partridge ended up
with the ove rall over Bran don Barnes in a 'grea t
125cc Pro contest.
The 250cc Pro action was rivet ing, as we ll.

Sam Mort ensen stayed right wi th Partridge as

giv ing Partridge an easy win. Mor tensen recovered to sa lvage second.

rai n in the foreca st, bu t David Howerton a nd
the Side-By-Side Racing sta ll had th e tra ck in
p rim o sha pe, a nd Mitchell too k ad va ntage 01 it
to not only mana ge wins in both mot os of the
competitive field of Over 40 rid er s, but to d o
so with two holes ho ts going awa y! KTM rid er
ick Allen p ut in a good ride to ta ke ru nn erup in bo th ou tings, holding off Suzuki-m ounted Greg Driscoll in the firs t and Brian Ba tterso n in the second. Batterso n's third in moto

With a little over half 01 the da y' s program
in th e record books, a 30-m inute d ow n pour
ensued, turning the track into one big mud hole

Mitchell was u nab le to back up his first -mot o
linis h 01 seco nd in the Over 35 doss. When the
ga te lell lor moto two, th e m ud too k its toll as
Mitchell han ded the lead over to a h.1rd-figh ting
Ronnie joh ns on. Hu saberg-backed Ricky joyce
took the moto win and moved into seco nd over all , a nd Da vid Hobso n ro u nd ed ou t th e top

with an impressive three cla ss ove rall wins,
racking up five moto wins and a health y ch unk
of change alon g the way.

Heath Voss took adv antage of a break in the ri g~
oraus professional motocross tour to mak e a stop
a t Spring Cree k lo r round number three of the
Super Series, and on his way to winning the 162~ A and 250 A classes, he swept the classes with
",; ns in each moto. Voss d id his win ning on his
Big Valle y / Sinisa lo /Fa etory Connection /Grea t
Lakes Aviation CR250. A whopping 749 en trants
made it out for the eve nt, which is less tha n the
more tha n 900 who showed up earlier this year,
but still an asto u nd ing 'n um be r non e the less.
Track condi tions were pretty much the same as
in the previous race except the san d wash whoo p
section was noticea bly easier in the begin ning of
the d ay, but the treachero us whoops got consid·
erably deeper as the da y wo re on . Some midd ay
ra in a lso put a d amper on thi ngs, as the l,uge
uph ills were elimin ated by day' s end. tho ugh the
track was back in top lorm .
At the start 01 th e firs t 1 (" 2~ A mo to, Voss
wa s the first int o tu rn one , fo llo wed by Da le
Ne ubaue r and Cha d Spa rks. Voss looked am..1Zing and showed wh y he is on e of the top prolessiona ls on the pro circui t tod ay, as he flat ou t

had to go lour lap s. At the linish, Voss had a 35secon d lead whe n the chec kered. flag flew over

bega n to fall, and Voss proved that he can easily

Moto two was dry and mint for the 20 riders
on the line, and this time it was Jeremy Labeau
lea d ing the pa ck into turn one, follo wed by
Neubauer a n d Sm it h . Af ter th e sa nd was h ,
Ed monso n em e rged in the lea d , follow ed by
Vo ss . Smith w ent d o w n ha rd o n one o f t he
d ownhills, and Voss was in the lead , followed
by Ed mo nso n, Kann Ne u ba ue r, Kev in Bel oy,
Spa rks a nd Labeau . From the e, Voss went on to

take the wi n, pulli ng out about three to five second s pe r lap on the field. Kann was a consistent
secon d an d Edmonson a consistent thi rd. Beloy
mad e up lor his first-mo te 10th by taki ng fourth ,
with Sparks rounding out the top five. .
