The sta rt of moto two was simi lar to the first,
as Musgrave blasted to another holes hot. Da vis
positi oned himself in seco nd , an d agai n Kellen
held thir d . The big sur prise came as the racers
roared out of the back canyon for the first time,
and it was Davis show ing up with the lead . He
passed Musgrave for the lead in the back part of
th e tra ck. Th e tw o talented rid ers res u med their
batt le fro m the first m oto , a n d the tw o were
nev er se parated by mor e tha n five bike lengths
for the en tire 2D-minu te moto. Davis held strong
with the lead , though Musgrav e doggedly pur s ued hi m in second . Kra u se. w ho suffered a
po or start, cha rged har d , and by the time th e
race wa s at the halfw ay mark, he wa s aga in
pressuring Kellen for thi rd .
It wa s clea r tha t Mu sgr a ve felt mor e comfortab le aboa rd his new machine this go-arou nd
after iro ning out a few geari ng and suspension
wrin k les du r in g the inter missi o n bet w een
motes, as he beg an to ha ng it out to the ragged
ed ge in pu rsu it o f Dav is an d the lea d . Da vis
pr oved to be no eas y mar k, as he relen tlessly
held on to th e point , despite the mu lti ple pas s
a ttemp ts by Musgra ve. Krau se also ha d a tiger
by th e tail, as he pressed Kellen for the third
spo t for most of the rnot o befor e fina lly putting
on the pass towa rd the end of the moto.
Wh en th e tw o-laps signa l was given, Mu sgrave mad e his move and went a round Davi s in
a hig h-speed off-cambe r swee per to tak e over
th e lead. Da vis did not g ive in, an d wh en th e
duo encoun tered lop ped traffic durin g the last
lap, he mad e rep ea ted att empts to di ve u nder
Musgra ve's KTM to regain the lead . In the end,
non e of the pass atte mpts wo rked for Davis, as
Musgra ve wa n ted no pa rt of sec ond place this
time arou nd , a nd he rod e in for the all-importa nt second -mote win. Davis finished a st rong
second, while Krause was agai n third .
On the day, Musgr a ve took home the firstplace m on~y with his 2-1 performan ce. Da vis
was next best with his 1-2 rides, while Krause
filled out the podium posi tions with a 3-3 tally .

checkers. elson managed to hold off KX rid er
Salaza r a nd take secon d in both mot ns. Salaza r
wcnt 3· 3, with Vangnes a nd Carrera rounding
out the top five. To m Long got credit for takin g
the holeshot in the seco nd mote, bu t he qu ickly
faded to a mid pack finis h u nder the ho t Texas
sun. Long went 0.7 for sixth place overall.
Joe Bob Ebers was on fire as us ua l, bu t this
time Ebers was racing a 1999 RM2 50 spo nsored
by H a r lin g en Suz u ki Mot o r Spo rt s . Ebe rs
snagged th e fir st -moto ho lesho t in the O pe n
Cash di vision , followed by Brian Monjaras and
Walter Bode. Ebers wen t on to win the first moto
uncon tes ted . wi th Mon jaras second a nd Christion Prida third . In the seco nd mo te, Bryan Monja ras put hi s RM250 up fr o n t wit h a cla ssi c
holesh ot. Mon jaras seta fast pace, mat ched only
by Ebers. But Ebers could not claw his way past
Monjar as u ntil the fina l lap . With only 300 ya rds .
to go, Ebers pulled off a wild ou tside pass an d
took the lead from Monjaras. Christian Prida was
not for behind and went 3-3-3 for the day. Walter
Bode and Phil Rimes cras hed in the water-towe r
tum , each taking a DNF in the seco nd mote .
In the 80cc class, Ricky Carcia rode his KX60
to a first-mo te wi n, with Je ro nim o Morin righ t
on Carcia's rea r fende r. Morin tried to p ut the
moves on Garcia but cou ld not take him in the
fi rs t mot o . Morin p u ll e d th e seco nd - mote
holes hot and never looked back. Garcia took second and Kawasak i- mo unted Blak e Ru s se ll

Alan Obst was the Ov er 30 Novi ce winner,

Late Mod el Vinta ge-class ride rs bro ught the
crowd to its feet in th e short-trac k main as Jesse
Krey ling overca me a less-than-perfect start to
sco re a co me-f ro m -be hind vic to ry o ve r his
nemeses Steve Ha ll and jesse vuekol. Despi te
slippe ry tra ck cond itions, Kreyling wor ked his
way up thr ough the or de r from abou t fourth to
the rear fend er of leader Hall. Kreyli ng hooked
up strong on the white-flag lap as the two riders
bumped with Kreyling on the insid e pos ition. In
th e process, Ha ll was relegat ed to fifth as the
rest of the pack follo wed Kreyling .

the Small Engin e class. Bu rr had settled for a
third in th e hea t ra ce, behind Ryan Deigh ton
a nd Dani elle Beving, bu t he held nothing bock

Burr had his han ds full for the 2SOcc A-class
race because he was lined up to start on the second row . Heat ",.inn ers Roger Wasson and Tom

'Kevem es, alon g with Scott Stu der and Danielle
Beving, led the pack into the first corne r. Burr' s
125 was no match for the po wer of the 250s on
the supermoist tra ck. Even so, Burr was ru nni ng
jus t insi de th e top 10 wit h a pa ck of six rid ers.
Kevernes and Beving batt led lap a fter lap . As
the race neared the fina l thr ee laps. Scott Studer
began to eat into Wasso n's lead, and Bevin g was
a pp lying m ore pressu re t ha n Kev erncs cou ld
handle. Bevin g mad e the pass int o thi rd with
one la p rem aining. Stude r came alongside Wasson through tum three on the final lap but could
not ma ke the pas....;. Wasson squea ked 'by, takin g
the checker s, followed by Stude r, Bev in g an d
Kcve rnes. Burr fin ish ed in 10th after rubbin g
plastic with bikes twice the size of his.
