Events f Steve Leivan won yet a noth e r round o f t he Missouri Ha re Scrambles series in Park Hills, but thi s ti m e it was a nail-bit er: Le iva n beat out C h ris Thi ele o n the last lap, Leivan divine at St. Joe HS By Frank Le iva n PARK HIL M LS. O.)ULY 4 Round si x o f t he Mi ssouri Hare Sc ra m bl es Cha mpion ship. held in St. joe State Park. saw Steve Lt..-ivan return to his v.linnin g wa ys, com ~ ing o u t o n to p of a ra cc lang duel w ith ri va l Chris Thiele. Leivan and Thiele battled for nearly 2.5 hours and 53 mi les. and when the checkered flag flew , the rn.·o were separated by a mcr·c fou r St.co nds. · A 10.5-mi le cou rse tha t used part of Saturd a y 's qu a d course al so fe a tu red ne arl y fo u r mil es of a ll- ne \\~, virgin tra iL With no practice lap, the first lap of the race was run at a mu ch , slower pace whil e lines were es tablished and the new tr ail s were beaten in ..Leivan and Thi ele were the onl y riders to complete five laps, a veraging 19 mph on lap one and cranking it up to 22 mph on the fina l circuit. The 15-rider AA class featured all of the series regulars, a long wi th some local fast guys and Australian KTM rider Steve Kuczko. Kuczko. who . is the mech.,nic for ISDE s... sation Shane Watts, n has been taking in as many events as he can while he is temporarily ou t of work due to Watt' $ I'L'CCnt knee injury . Kuczko ran up front early in the race before settling for seventh overall. KX250~ moun ted Thiele led th e cl1a~ge into the wood s, with Kuczko (on his little KTM 125), Chris Nesbi tt, Mike Wind ma nn a nd Leivan dose behind. From that poin t. the race turned intI' a freig ht train. , "That fir st lap wa s just a tra il rid e:' cxplaint.-d Leivan. "No one cou ld 'go very fast , si nce we were all trying to find the trail and k~p from mis sing turns. On ce the course got establi shed , we could go faste r and actu ally race each other." And race each other is exactly what the top riders did. Midway through the second lap, Chris Caplinger, making his first appearan ce in the series , moved up to pass for the lead . Caplinger held the lead until the end of the lap•.when he was forced to pit due to the fact that he was using a m ot ocross gas tank. Leivan took ove r fro m there, but not without pressure from Thiele. After four laps of dicing. Thiele and Leivan headed into the fifth lap. with Thiele in the lead . Content to follow a nd wait for a mis ta ke, Leivan stayed glued to Thiele and, in nearly the same spo t on whi ch Thiele had crashed on an earlier lap , he crashed again, letting Leivan take the lead !or the final time . From that point on, Leivan rode error~frec, movin g through the trees and la pped traffic with ease. Thie le stayed close but never got the opportunity to regain the lead . Caplinger held off Nesb itt to the bitter end to claim thi rd . Windmann dropped off the pace a bit but still sa lvaged fifth, behi nd Nesbitt. Results 0 / A; 1. St\.· ve lA-i an (Ya m); 2.
